  • Simple pop-up site in a small Lake District hamlet
  • A five-minute drive from the southern end of Windermere and Fell Foot
  • A 15-minute drive to Cartmel village for popular sticky toffee pudding
Simply stunning – that’s how many will choose to sum up Valley End, a simple, back to basics site in the small hamlet of Newby Bridge. The pop-up site is in prime Lake District territory: the southern end of Windermere and the National Trust’s lakefront Fell Foot park are five minutes’ drive away, and once there, it’s possible to take a dip or hire watersports equipment to properly soak up the lake and fell views. The site is also in a classic Cumbrian landscape. It’s green and rural, dotted with trees and with views over faraway hills and neighbouring farms with neighbouring sheep and wildlife. For your daily walkies (dogs being optional – as it’s a dog-friendly site, too), make your way to the Cumbrian Coastal Way (10 minutes’ drive) or the trails of Grizedale Forest (25 minutes). Watersports, anyone? As well as being near Fell Foot’s watersports, paddleboards are for hire along the river Leven five minutes’ drive away. Sticky toffee pudding? While such a dessert might sound out of place, it’s a specialty in the shop in Cartmel, a village which also has a racecourse and an ancient priory. For a dinner out, head down to the village to eat at one of its several hotels, which welcome non-guests. Self-catering is very achievable too, with supermarkets in Ulverston or Milnthorpe, both within 20 minutes’ drive of the site. There is also a local shop less than a mile away on the A590. The A590 and the M6 are two handy nearby motorway links. The simple facilities at Valley End include toilets and waste bins.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The site was picturesque, photos don't do it justice. First time camping with our small cockapoo and sort of last-minute, but everything couldn't have worked out more perfect after a recommendation from a friend to check Pitchup. We were less than 10 minute drive from Lake Windermere, the hosts were friendly and other campers too, had a good chat and a restful sleep. The dog managed to chill out and didn't bother other guests, just very happy with the whole experience and will be doing it again!

Liked: We stayed here for one night on the Saturday just gone. A very peaceful and scenic location a stones throw away from great amenities as well as walks. Paul and Gemma were very welcoming and could not be more helpful during our stay. 100% recommend staying at valley end, we will be back 😁

Local attractions

To the Lakes, first of all? At the Lakeside Pier (10 minutes’ drive), catch a cruise over Windermere’s fine waters. Coniston Water (35 minutes), the fifth-largest lake in the national park, is another splendid option. Sprinkle in a few National Trust sites next: Sizergh (15 minutes) and Beatrix Potter Gallery and Hawkshead (25 minutes) perhaps… Such places may get you in the mood for more historic spots, and there are plenty around, including the Lakeland Motor Museum (10 minutes), the heritage Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (10 minutes), Cartmel Priory (10 minutes) and the 200-acre grounds and deer park of the Holker Hall & Gardens (15 minutes). A stroll, perhaps? There’s a fairly steep climb at Bigland Barrow (10 minutes), and it’s also next to the 11-acre fishery of Bigland Tarn (15 minutes). A stroll around Bowness-on-Windermere (20 minutes) is always a good idea if you want lots of urban things to look at. Some unlikely companions can also be sought out for a walk at the PREDATOR EXPERIENCE - Wolf Experience UK (five minutes), which has a ‘walk with wolves’ experience.
