  • Quiet family-run Cumbria site almost on the England-Scotland border
  • Hadrian's Wall, Lake District or Dumfries a half-hour drive away
  • Easy access to M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7
Which way will you go – north to Scotland, west to the Solway coast, east to Hadrian’s Wall or south to Carlisle and the Lake District? The options are indeed plentiful when you stay at High Gaitle Caravan Park, a quiet family-run site in the Cumbria countryside. This handily located site is just off the A6071 between Longtown (two minutes’ drive) and Gretna (five minutes), putting it almost on the border between Scotland and England. Easy access to/from the M6, A7 and National Cycle Route 7 make this a useful spot for a short stopover on a long journey, but as you can see from the list above there are plenty of options for entertainment nearby if you’re staying over for a longer break. It’s a fairly simple setup here, with an emphasis on doing the essentials well rather than providing lots of facilities. That means you’ll have access to bathrooms (with a wheelchair-accessible area), a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area, but you shouldn't expect things like wifi or a play area. Pitches are nicely flat and sheltered by trees, and you’ll be allowed to bring along a barbecue for a bit of outdoor cookery. Dogs are also welcome on site. Need any help while you're here? Friendly manager Steven lives on site and is happy to offer local advice – the family have lived here for many years, so they certainly know their way around.

From the manager: Thank you for leaving a review and we are pleased you were happy with our faciilities.
We are close to a road which makes us the ideal place to explore in every direction. It can be a busy road at times.
There is lovely path along the river in Longtown which is around a 15 minute walk from our gates.
Enjoy your future camping trips!

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked We liked the open space and layout of the site, friendly welcome, and easy access from the main road. As other reviewers have said the site has been just been taken over and is under development. Nice touches include washing up materials in the utility room and shampoo in the showers.
It is also convenient for the M6 and particularly so for a stopover on a long journey. We toured about from the site along the south Solway coast to Silloth, across the north coast to Dumfries and Galloway, east to the Scottish Borders and across to Kielder water. Never a dull day between visiting Roman forts, Scottish castles, bird reserves, coastal walks and even a Tibetan Buddhist monastery. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Disliked Nothing really.

There is loads to discover in every direction and we are thrilled you have covered so much! We will endeavour to add these places of interest to our website in the upcoming months!

Hope you had a safe journey home and hope you will stay with us again in the future.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked The cleanliness of the facilities and the complimentary products available.

Disliked The showers were a hassle with the button having to be pressed very frequently. There was also nowhere to dry and get dressed afterwards as it was all wet.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: A lot of campsites have push button showers to ensure water isn't left running or wasted, but I'm sorry this wasn't a positive experience for you.
We appreciate your honest feedback and are happy that took time to write a review and chose us for your stay 😊
Hope you had a good onward journey.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Excellent location and easy to get to. From the moment we arrived we were made welcome. Stephen who runs the site always there to help and makes your stay that little bit special with emergency toothbrushes at hand , charging facilities and even complimentary tea and coffee at hand in utility area. Can't give him enough praise for how well run and tidy the site is. 10 out of 10. We'll be back.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Toilets and showers spotlessly clean. Utility room with kettle and tea bags was very helpful.

Disliked Site is next to a busy road, if camping choose a pitch away from the road.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked A warm welcome from the owner who kindly lent us an extra long lead for the electric hook-up. Spacious pitch on a well kept, grassy site. The facilities were immaculate with the unusual addition of shower gel and also washing up liquid and scrubbing pads in the dishwashing room.

Disliked Not a dislike, but guests might like to know that there appear to be no walks directly from the site.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your amazing review 🙏🏼👍🏼
We are commited to keeping our facilities clean and offering small extras to elevate your stay. It's great that these touches noted! - Thank you 😊🥰
When you visit next time, here is a suggestion for a walk for you to try; 😊
Turn right off the park and walk to the bridge at Longtown (which is less than a mile). Then take the steps down to the picturesque river walk along the side of the Esk.
We hope you'll visit us again 😊

A lovely stop over for us with attention to detail.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked We had a quick stop over at this site on our way back towards home. Site was well maintained, facilities were clean and small details had been taken into consideration to make your stay comfortable. Available for use - feminine products, toothbrushes and toothpaste, plenty of loo roll, shower gel and hand soap, dish soap, sponges and ironing board to name a few.

Local attractions

Sticking to the English side of the border first, you may like to head to Carlisle (20 minutes' drive) for the castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum, perhaps taking a detour to Walby Farm Park (15 minutes), Solway Aviation Museum (20 minutes) or Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes) en route. Head further down the M6 and you’ll get to the Lake District National Park (about half an hour) for walks, watersports and boat trips. There are lots of great walks over to the east, too, in the Northumberland National Park or the North Pennines National Landscape. Some of those trails take in sections of Hadrian’s Wall – or you can head directly to top spots like the Roman Army Museum (half an hour) and Housesteads Roman Fort (40 minutes). Moving north into Scotland, your first stop will surely be Gretna (five minutes) – you may not be eloping, as many couples once did, but the designer outlet may still furnish you with a new outfit or two. From there, it’s not far at all to places like Annandale Distillery (15 minutes) and The Devil’s Porridge Museum (10 minutes), telling the story of Gretna’s World War I munitions factory.
