Smardale Mill Shepods: Shepod exterior with decking

General

  • Luxurious 'shepod' glamping in Cumbria countryside near Kirkby Stephen
  • A 15-minute drive to Brough Castle; 45 minutes to the Lake District
  • Fully equipped pods with fishing and hikes from site; pubs close by

Tip-top glamping pods with all mod cons, Smardale Mill Shepods are set on a working farm in dramatic Cumbrian fell country. Surrounded by spectacular views, these delightfully decorated and fully equipped pods are just the thing for anyone who likes a certain degree of comfort with their outdoor adventures.

Nifty kitchens come with a fridge, cooker and breakfast bar, and the 'shepods' also have a cosy living space, a double bed and a bathroom with a full-size shower, so you can warm up after a day out hiking. (Please note that linen is provided for the double bed but not for the sofa bed in the open living space.)

Smardale Nature Reserve (five minutes’ drive) is a good place to start your exploration of the Yorkshire Dales on foot, with a circular trail along a former railway line to historic Smardale Gill Viaduct (15 minutes). With all this glorious countryside close by, it’s all-too-easy to forget that this site is easily accessible from the M6.

And anglers, don’t forget to pack your rods, as the Scandal river offers a mile of private fishing to test out during your stay.

You can cook in your pod or spark up the barbecue – head to Kirkby Stephen (10 minutes’ drive) to pick up the essentials – and there are plenty of interesting pubs around locally, serving fine regional food (Yorkshire pudding with Sunday roasts) and craft beers.

What a great destination. The hostess was very on point in terms of ensuring that the booking was confirmed and stayed in touch leading up to the trip. She was also very accommodating both with the dates (had a family emergency last minute) as well as setting up the shepod (the homemade cupcakes were delish). Although she was not present during the stay, her extended family were just as accomodating.

The shepod itself is brilliant - warm, cosy and it has everything you need. The shower system has good pressure and the hot water is supplied by the boiler situated in the shepod itself. There is underfloor heating so the shepod remains a lovely temperature despite the rain and chill outside.

Smardale is turned out to be a lovely place and the most of the folk we interacted with were genuinely friendly.

Overall, this is a place I would definitely return to.

    Disliked:

Less of a dislike but more of a warning - the water temperature can go hot real fast so watch out when using the taps.

Beautifully clean, lovely welcome, amazing views.
We were welcomed by host with freshly baked cakes and a real feeling we could ask for anything.
The views are beautiful, it’s incredibly peaceful (well, before we rocked up with 2 noisy children) and amazing for star gazing at night!
Well thought out accommodation - literally everything you need there.
    Great WiFi. Fluffy towels.
Best for couples or families with really young children as it is compact inside and a bit of a squeeze with the sofa bed open too.

    Disliked:

A little too remote for families with busy children! It’s in a very remote location down winding unlit roads so we weren’t comfortable going out after dusk.
Take fly spray!! Can’t be helped …. you’re out in the country but there were millions of them!
Take a fan! It gets really hot at night with 4 people inside.

The hut was gorgeous, clean and tidy. Parking was great and facilities within the hut were easy to use. We didn’t see much off the owners, this was fine for us as we worked our way around things and the handbook was useful.

    Disliked:

The location was quite difficult to find even with directions given. It may benefit from more signage around if possible. The site was nice but quite far away from amenities, we had to drive as we had a 5 year old and didn’t want to risk walking on the roads. Most pubs locally were closed so we had to go further afield for a meal. (Not sites issue, Appleby fair was due!!)

Stay at Smardale during July 2021 and was lucky enough to have used the pod for the first time - overall very impressed with the whole setup - if your looking for a relaxing break this is a perfect location. Within easy reach of lots of interesting places. The owners were very helpful and the amenities were exceptional. The views are to die for - we enjoyed it so much have recommended it to our son who has now booked to go in August.
