  • Well-maintained Lake District site half a kilometre from Derwentwater
  • A five-minute drive from Catbells; 15 minutes from Whinlatter Forest
  • Pub with a beer garden a short walk away; adventure centre nearby
Mountain biking, high ropes, quad biking and boating… whatever your calling, you’ll be well placed for mucking into all sorts of outdoor activities from Newlands Valley Campsite in the Lake District National Park. Half a kilometre from Derwentwater and 10 minutes’ drive away from Keswick, this family-run pop-up site will plant you firmly near to fells, lakes and forests. You’ll be able to channel your energy into the outdoors from here, as there’s an activity centre five minutes’ drive away (climbing, archery and kayaking included). The nearest fell is five minutes’ drive away for a challenging hike and there are more trails including mountain biking or cycling courses around Whinlatter Forest Park, 15 minutes’ drive away. When you’re ready to give your feet a rest and refill with some tasty food, the local pub is 10 minutes’ walk away up the hill – it’s quite the cosy spot with a beer garden so you can stay in the fresh air if you please while you indulge in a homecooked meal. As a pop-up site, the facilities on site simply take care of the essentials – as you’ll likely be a little mucky from your adventures out and about, there are showers, toilets and clean water where you can freshen up.

Liked Loved this campsite. Even when full, it felt so spacious. Toilets and showers kept clean. Owner/staff friendly. Keswick was only 10 minutes or so away, perfect location. Kids loved it, especially swimming in the lovely clear river. My dog was also living his best life there. Highly recommend. Can't wait to visit again.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We’ve just got home from a 3-night stay and had such an amazing experience. From the moment we arrived, we received a warm welcome and all the staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay.
The campsite itself is lovely, with flat fields that made pitching easy, and the views were absolutely stunning. During the heatwave, the river was perfect for the kids and dogs to cool off and play in. The toilets, showers, and washing areas were always clean and well maintained, and there were drinking water taps conveniently located around the site.
We were also surprised by how much there was to do nearby. Within 10 minutes you have Whinlatter Forest, Catbells, Derwentwater, a pub just a 2-minute walk up the road, and beautiful riverside walks directly from the campsite.
The site has three fields, including one adults-only area, but the family field had a lovely atmosphere with children all playing together and adults chatting and mingling. The campsite is very dog friendly too. A few dogs barked quite a bit and not everyone followed the lead rules, but it certainly didn’t spoil our stay.
Overall, we thought this campsite was fantastic value for money considering the location, facilities, and the fact it’s a pop-up site. We’ll definitely be back — thank you so much for a brilliant stay!

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really great site, really appreciated the fact there was an adult site and a family site. Facilities were clean and well stocked. Brilliant location, with mountains all around. An added bonus of a pub up the road! Staff were readily available.

Disliked The road that divides the two sites can be particularly noisy but that is of no fault of the campsite.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful location in a valley. Scenic and load of things to do in the sorrounding. Excellent facilities with clean toilets and showers also washing up area. We did Catwell hike with kids and they loved the experience. Also derwentwater lake nearby and can take boat ride to keswick from Haues End.

Disliked Not related to campsite but no internet connection from some providers like 3 network. So be prepared and download local maps while you can. You’d be lucky if your network provider has reach there.

Local attractions

Those of you who are ready and willing to get a little mucky (go on – you’re on holiday) might want to get started with some quad biking or Segwaying 10 minutes’ walk from the site. You’ve got a few ways to get stuck in at Whinlatter Forest Park (15 minutes' drive) – aside from hiking, cycling and mountain biking, there are zipwires and treetop obstacles to tackle on the Go Ape course. That’s not all in the way of outdoorsy pursuits. The local adventure centre (five minutes) runs kayaking and canoeing, scrambling, rock climbing, archery and another high ropes course. If you like a challenge, Catbells (five minutes) is a fell with a six-kilometre hike. For a watersports day, nearby Nichol End Marine (five minutes) offer a 20% discount for all campsite guests (just ask the site for the discount code after you've booked your pitch). Otherwise, take a more leisurely route (or a boat, if you want to rest your feet) around Derwentwater (10 minutes’ walk). Aira Force Waterfall (half an hour’s drive) has more spectacular water scenery. For more of those chilled-out activities, be sure to call by the Lake District Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Castlerigg Stone Circle (15 minutes), a Neolithic stone circle.
