Local attractions
Those of you who are ready and willing to get a little mucky (go on – you’re on holiday) might want to get started with some quad biking or Segwaying 10 minutes’ walk from the site. You’ve got a few ways to get stuck in at Whinlatter Forest Park (15 minutes' drive) – aside from hiking, cycling and mountain biking, there are zipwires and treetop obstacles to tackle on the Go Ape course.
That’s not all in the way of outdoorsy pursuits. The local adventure centre (five minutes) runs kayaking and canoeing, scrambling, rock climbing, archery and another high ropes course. If you like a challenge, Catbells (five minutes) is a fell with a six-kilometre hike.
Otherwise, take a more leisurely route (or a boat, if you want to rest your feet) around Derwentwater (10 minutes’ walk). Aira Force Waterfall (half an hour’s drive) has more spectacular water scenery.
For more of those chilled-out activities, be sure to call by the Lake District Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Castlerigg Stone Circle (15 minutes), a Neolithic stone circle.
