The gorgeous scenery of Lake District National Park is within your grasp when you stay at Borrowdale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite. This peaceful woodland site is remarkable not only for its spacious, tree-lined pitches, but also for its remarkably convenient location: at the south-western end of Derwentwater, which can be reached via a 15-minute walk through the woods or a 10-minute drive. The pretty town of Keswick (20 minutes’ drive), with its stone cottages and lakeside trails, is at the opposite (north-eastern) end of the lake. Facilities are scarce (no toilets or showers, for example), but there are electric hook-up points, barbecues are allowed and dogs are welcome. Also on site is an information hut where guests can pick up leaflets on local attractions to help them plan their Lake District days – whether they’re into walking the fells, balancing on a paddleboard on the lake or exploring the local villages. Access to the site requires a little care and attention, but there’s a bus stop a five-minute walk away, so you don’t have to reach for the car keys at all while you’re here. This site is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and it’s open to members and non-members alike, with special rates for members. The price displayed is for members only, so non-members will need to pay the £15/night extra or buy a £69 membership – worth considering if you're likely to spend more than four nights at a Club site over the year, as it brings discounts at more than 140 UK sites, plus other perks like access to tailored caravan/motorhome insurance, discounts on days out and savings on top brands.

Route directions

For the final approach, please use only these directions and not satnav (alternative routes are unsuitable for towing). Leave the M6 at J40 onto the A66 (Keswick). On the outskirts of Keswick, keep right onto the bypass (signposted Cockermouth A66). Within 1.5 miles, at the roundabout, turn left (signposted A5271 Keswick, Borrowdale B5289). At the T-junction turn left; and at mini roundabout turn right and follow signposts onto the B5289. In about 4.25 miles (about 0.5 mile past Borrowdale Hotel), turn right over the double-hump bridge into the road signposted Grange, Newlands (ignore width restriction sign, this does not apply to the bridge). The site is on the right after about a mile. Please note: when towing, do not approach or leave the site along the west side of Derwentwater. Also, before turning right off the B5289 at Grange, check that the bridge is clear (this does allow caravans). Care is needed when travelling over the double-hump bridge through Grange village and on the final approach since there is narrow turning into the site.

Local attractions

In Keswick (20 minutes’ drive), the Derwent Pencil Museum explores the history of this humble writing tool and the 16th-century discovery of graphite deposits in the area. After stocking up on coloured pencils in the gift shop, head to the lake for a boat trip or to soak up the splendid landscape. Residents at Lake District Wildlife Park (25 minutes), just to the north of Bassenthwaite Water, include lemurs, meerkats and red pandas. Among the on-hand experiences here are feeding the farm animals and learning to fly hawks and other birds of prey. There is more animal action at nearby Alpacaly Ever After, where you can meet and walk with alpacas. Experience the grandeur of the Lake District at places like Moss Force Waterfall (25 minutes) and Scale Force (half an hour), both of which tumble dramatically down granite cliffs. The waterfalls sit either side of Crummock Water; hike the trails climbing up peaks like Mellbreak and Grasmoor for unforgettable views of the lake.
