One look at the Lake District’s glassy lakes and green fells, and before you know it your bags are packed and you’re ready to go. One last thing: you’ll want to lock in a place to stay that'll set you up nicely to thoroughly explore the national park. Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site, just a 15-minute drive from the shores of Windermere, does just that… The spacious site is tucked between two iconic Lake District destinations: the lively market town of Kendal, 10 minutes’ drive southeast, and Bowness-on-Windermere, 20 minutes’ drive west. The latter is right on the shores of England’s largest lake (Windermere, of course), and getting out on the water is easy – hire a boat or a paddleboard, or alternatively opt for a lake cruise. Once you've had your fill, you could retreat to the shores for a picnic, wildlife spotting or a look at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction. Just off the A591, Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site is indeed a handy launchpad for the Lake District, but it's also peaceful and well equipped. There’s an on-site bar, The Whistling Pig, for a good meal and something to wash it down with. Everyone has been thought of, with a play area, dedicated backpacking facilities, a designated dog walk, accessible facilities and other conveniences including a drying room, a parent and baby room and a television room. Staying here also places you within walking distance of the amenities in Staveley village. Shops, restaurants and a railway station are around a mile's walk away over the fields. Just one more thing: the site is managed by the Camping and Caravanning Club. Both members and non-members are welcome. Members benefit from a reduced rate, so just make sure you select the correct membership option when booking.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Loved the site, nice and quiet. You get taken to your pitch (which is amazing). The facilities were clean and warm. Great value for your hard earned cash.

Disliked My only gripe was, my pitch had the hardcore up high, so my pegs wouldn’t go all the way down.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (maximum 6 metres)

Liked This campsite is lovely! So peaceful, friendly and helpful staff and the facilities were so clean. Great toilet and shower facilities, clean and well checked regularly. It’s such a big site, we enjoyed a good walk round with the dog of an evening and she enjoyed the new smells…and chasing the poor rabbits!
Great location if you want to explore Windermere or kendle. We went to Ambleside too and enjoyed that. You would need a car to get around though, it isn’t really in walking distance to anything.

Disliked Every thing was done well and we had everything we needed!
We are not camping and Caravanning members so it was quite expensive.

Liked Wonderful setting just past Kendal but south of Windermere itself.
The site was well laid out and the site assistants were on hand to help out when needed. Very nice and peaceful and a great position for a gateway to the lakes.

Disliked On a slightly negative note the water points, well there isn't enough for the size of the site and the water point nearest to us had an adapted filler pipe that wasn't correct and sprayed water everywhere.

Being based between Bowness-on-Windermere and Kendal certainly has its perks, whether it's your first time in the Lake District or you're a repeat visitor. Spend the morning in Kendal (10 minutes’ drive), strolling from coffee shops to museums across the historic cobbled ‘yards’. By late morning or early afternoon, you could be at the shores of Windermere in Bowness-on-Windermere (20 minutes), poised for a lake cruise across to Ambleside or Lakeside.
