  • Family-run farm site at the foot of Whinfell Beacon
  • A 25-minute drive from Windermere; 15 minutes from Kendal
  • Hiking and cycling nearby and five miles from the Yorkshire Dales
With the Lakes on one side and the Dales on the other, it’s no surprise that hikers and cyclists find themselves so nicely placed for take-off at Cockin Farm Campsite… The family-run farm is tucked in a gorgeous spot at the foot of Whinfell Beacon, surrounded by slopes of grazing cows and featuring sunsets that will surely have you looking forward to golden hour drinks all day. It’s a 15-minute drive to Kendal, with its climbing centre, shops, restaurants, weekly outdoor farmers' market and the Brewery Arts which hosts live comedy, music and cinema. The farm is on the outskirts of the Lake District National Park, so whisk yourself westwards to the lovely Lake Windermere (25 minutes' drive) for walks along the shore, watersports or a visit to The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere. All this, and you still haven’t heard it all… because Cockin Farm Campsite is dog-friendly and just six miles away from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where there are miles of moors, slopes and valleys. Plus, this small slice of the countryside often has barn owls flying over the fields, as well as other wildlife like hares. Disconnecting is very much encouraged – not that you’ll need much encouragement other the idea of tasty barbecues and evenings spent around a firepit (both are welcome on the farm). To help you along with such things, there's a small shop on site selling essentials like water and logs, along with local produce such as honey and eggs.

Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch

Liked: The campsite itself was amazing, in the middle of no where which was perfect to get away from the hustle and bustle of reality ! The campsite organisation were great also! The ground was really wet (causing people to get stuck in their vehicles) they came out and placed stuff down so it was no longer an issue ! They also came around every day see how you were and if there was any issues or anything they could do to help. The facilities were very clean.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Amazing views, and the camping space was great. Was able to contact site owner and was very chilled about everything

Disliked: Toilet facilities were very basic, just a portaloe. And had to park separately to the site and car things over a bridge to site, it was raining at the time. Track to site was a farm track, I was driving a new car, which was slightly nerve racking at times

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Back to basics camping in a great location, situated on farmland just outside of Kendal. Stayed with our two children and dog who had a great time paddling in the stream in their wellies! They also had a giggle when they woke up to sheep outside the tent as they had scaled the wall from the neighbouring field! Portaloo is easy to get to from your pitch. The neighbouring farmer can be busy with his sheep for a while but is happily to let you through if needed. We didn't get to meet the hosts but we did however meet their cows who were so lovely! The hosts were extremely helpful by sending us information before our arrival, we will definitely book a stay again in the near future and can't wait to see the transformation as they finish renovations!

Disliked: Hit a lot of hard ground when pitching the tent so had to shuffle around a few times but this isn't a huge deal as there is plenty of space. This isn't a dislike as such as it didn't really bother us, but if you couldn't sleep due to the sound of sheep this place is not for you, they are very loud.

From the manager: Thank you so much for the review. We are glad you had such a good time and the kids look to have loved the river! Sorry about the sheep I think the neighbouring farmer had just weaned them the weekend you stayed so they aren't normally as noisy!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A warm welcome to a genuinely rustic setting with gorgeous views and a beautifully tranquil ambiance. It was the perfect place to relax and let the world happen around you. Loved it.

Disliked: The site is catagorized on Pitchup as having parking next to pitch/unit. This isn't the case; vehicles cannot access the pitch field, which wasn't an issue for our stay but might be for others'. Also the pitch field is very bumpy, finding a level spot for the tent was difficult.

From the manager: Thank you so much for the review and sorry about the parking - we had hoped to have the campsite in a different field which I'd accessible by car but as its been a wet summer this hasn't been possible so we moved it but I forgot to update the listing until I saw your review! Apologies again

Local attractions

In the Lake District National Park, there are lots of lovely lakes like Windermere (25 minutes’ drive) to explore. Being the largest lake in the Lake District, it offers a variety of activities including rowing boats, sailing trips, gorgeous walks and delicious coffee shops on its shoreline. It's not just the lakes that you’ll want to explore, however stunning they are. Rydal Cave (45 minutes), a man made cavern in an old slate quarry, is a great pitstop on your rounds over at Rydal Water, often visited by the poet William Wordsworth. The Victorian neo-gothic house Wray Castle (50 minutes) is a National Trust site on Windermere’s west shore with just gorgeous walking trails. As for the Yorkshire Dales, one of the closest spots for guests at Cockin Farm Campsite to explore is Cautley Spout (35 minutes), the highest waterfall fully above ground height in England.
