The Barn Campsite

9.1

This site does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Quiet, peaceful rural site with stunning views over Eskdale Valley
  • A 10-minute drive to Wast Water; 25 minutes to Scafell Pike
  • Pick your own pitch; pub 10 minutes' walk away

Fancy a trip to England’s deepest lake? Perhaps a scramble up the country’s highest mountain? Both of these (Wast Water and Scafell Pike, of course) are within easy reach of The Barn Campsite, as are plenty of other top spots including Coniston Water, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and the Cumbria coastline.

From this Lake District site between Eskdale and Holmrook there are some fine views to be had out over the Eskdale Valley and plenty of space from which to enjoy them. It’s a pitch-free setup here, so you can simply take a wander around and pick the spot that suits you best. Portaloos, rubbish bins and three drinking water stations are provided for guests’ use, but there are no fires allowed on site (and in general you’re asked to be considerate and respect the countryside).

This is a properly green and rural location (as you’ll spot from the accompanying pics) but it’s not devoid of local amenities – there’s a hot food station just over the road and it’s a 10-minute walk to a local pub for some great food and real ales. A little further along the road (a mile and a bit away) is a village store, and there’s a small supermarket about five minutes’ drive away in Holmrook (which also has a pub and some great salmon fishing on the River Irt).

Great location for Tongue Pot & Scafell Pike!13/09/2022

Lots of room, decent shower, clean toilets and Johnnty was very friendly and helpful.
Also, he offered each unit sold by pitch, rather than by tent or by person, therefore you could bring as many tents or people along as you liked as long as it all fit on one pitch, which makes most sense. Pitchup go by "per person" but some campsites will charge you extra if its 6 people in 6 single tents as opposed to 6 ppl in a 6 person tent, which is a risk if the campsite is full and they don't have room for the other 5 people. Therefore, offering "per pitch" avoids all of this.

    Disliked:

    Only one shower.

Absolutely beautiful place to stay. Views stunning. Total peace & quiet. Only sounds from the sheep , cows & birds .
We had 3 wonderful nights here & the weather was amazing very hot ( for a change in the normal rainy Lake District) .
Jonty the owner was fantastic, very helpful & friendly. Always happy smiling & laughing. He is a very knowledgeable guy giving advice on good walks , pubs & places to visit.
There are 4 portaloos which were kept immaculate.
One shower which was brilliant & also immaculate.
Washing up area under cover very clean & plenty fresh drinking water.
    Definitely be back next year.

Great location with relaxed atmosphere. Campsite owner really friendly and knowledgable about the local area and kept on top of cleaning the portaloos. We had a swim in a nearby river and kids loved running up and down the hill and the chickens. We will be back.

Jonty was really friendly and attentive, even calling on the day of our arrival to confirm arrival times. We were running late due to traffic so he happily allowed us to check ourselves in and gave us a quick run down of the facilities over the phone.

This is by far the best pop-up camp site we've used and the price is more than reasonable, particularly if you are a slightly larger group.

There were 4 portaloos which were kept very clean, and even a gas heated shower which was an absolute luxury after a day of walking! There was a makeshift sink for dishes which was more than suitable and easy access to drinking water.

The location for access to Wast Water (brilliant paddle board location), Scafell Pike and the coast was great; all within a 20ish minute drive.

We can't rate Jonty and the campsite higher. His friendly demeanor and local tips were fantastic and we'd thoroughly recommend.

Really nice quiet site with plenty of space. Jonty the owner was really friendly, greeting everyone on arrival and full of helpful recommendations for food etc nearby. The facilities are good if basic - there's portaloos, tap water, a porta-shower, and a charging point for phones etc. Everything was regularly cleaned and there was plenty of toilet paper, hand sanitiser, etc. Pub down the road really great for an evening meal too although looked fully booked on the Friday night.

    Disliked:

It said no fires so we didn't bring our portable BBQ but it seemed like we had maybe been over-cautious as every other pitch had a firepit!! A bit of clarity on that wouldn't have gone amiss.

Local attractions

Get set to see some of the Lake District’s most famed sights on outings from The Barn – it will take you about 10 minutes to drive to Wast Water, 20 minutes to the dramatic cascades of Stanley Ghyll waterfall or 40 minutes to Coniston Water for boat trips and sailing courses.

If you’d like a little more of an uphill challenge, scramble up Sca Fell (15 minutes’ drive) or the slightly taller Scafell Pike (25 minutes). Alternatively, for a much gentler day out, sign up for llama or alpaca trekking at The Woolly Farm (five minutes).

There’s plenty of heritage around here too: perhaps you’d like to mooch around Muncaster Castle (10 minutes) to see the haunted castle and hawk centre, or visit the atmospheric ruins of Egremont Castle (20 minutes). A ride on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (10 minutes) is a good way to mix up a bit of scenery and a sense of past times.

Looking out towards the coast instead, you may like to head to the seaside at Seascale (15 minutes), where there’s a beach and a golf course.

Must see
