  • Small, simple site in the Lake District's Cartmel Valley
  • A 10-minute drive to Cartmel, Lakeland Motor Museum or Lake Windermere
  • Access to bridleway just outside the site; pub within walking distance
Small, simple and scenic – if you’re after a quiet break in the Cartmel Valley, High Cark Hall Campsite should suit you down to the ground. This peaceful rural spot is in the southern stretch of the Lake District National Park, with gorgeous views all around and a laidback vibe on site. Whether you’re coming here for walking, cycling, nature spotting or touring the Lakes’ many attractions, you’ll be well placed at this sweet little spot 10 minutes’ drive from Cartmel. The site is set just off a bridleway so you’ll easily be able to get out for walks or bike rides, and there are plenty of scenic spots nearby, from the lakeside trails of Windermere (10 minutes’ drive) to the uphill routes at The Old Man of Coniston (40 minutes). Back on site, you’ll have plenty of space to relax and soak up the views and peaceful atmosphere. The pitches here are next to a working farm so you may be lucky enough to see some of the neighbouring animals from your pitch or the local wildlife that often passes by. To add to the countryside vibes and contribute to the peaceful soundtrack, a little stream runs through the site. The pitches are pretty simple, with facilities stretching to just a drinking water tap, a washing-up area and a single toilet. For your picnic and meal supplies, there are some excellent shops in foodie favourite Cartmel; it’s also got a Michelin-starred restaurant for when you’re feeling fancy. A pub is also within 35 minutes' walk of the site, in the village of High Newton.

The helpful and approachable owners, along with the peaceful surroundings and proximity to walking routes, are frequently highlighted. Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good flat pitch
Large spread out pitches
Small site - not too far to walk for facilities.
Well signed throughout
Very clean facilities, very well presented with nice touches.

Disliked This isn’t a dislike of the site, but more of a recommendation. Don’t try taking the public footpath NW of the site through Seatle Plantation. It is completely impassable due to fallen trees and brambles.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The campsite was quiet and very well maintained. Although offering simple facilities it was very clean and very functional with lovely hot water at the pot wash including washing liquid and scrubber.
The location is great for walks and a great welcome from the site owner.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Out of the way campsite, simple but with clean toilet and washing up facilities and drinking water available. 10 pitches available in a field.

Disliked Went for a quiet night away so it was a shame that we had a baby crying in the tent opposite until 11:30pm! Not the owners fault but quiet hours should be observed when they are clearly stated on the website...

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Friendly host, came to greet us and explained where everything was.
Lovely place, ground had grass nicely trimmed.
Had slots clearly marked by numbers.
Flat ground overall!
Lots of room to park car and pitch tent next to it.
There was fresh drinking water tap so you don’t need to carry extra with you.
Pristinely clean toilet and wash area.

Local attractions

Nearby Cartmel (10 minutes' drive) has a sweet claim to fame – it’s said to be responsible for the popularity of sticky toffee pudding. You can (and should) buy one of your own in the town’s pudding shop, and it’s also worth stopping by the cheese shop and the brewery for savoury snacks and drinks. All of that should fuel you well for the area’s walks and bike rides, or for other activities including horse riding, watersports on Windermere (20 minutes to the canoe hire centre) or swinging through the trees at Go Ape Grizedale (half an hour). Back down at ground level, take it easy with visits to the Lakes Aquarium and Lakeland Motor Museum (both 10 minutes). You can also get your heritage fix at Levens Hall, National Trust - Sizergh and Blackwell - the Arts & Crafts house (20 minutes) or take a steam-powered ride on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (10 minutes).
