  • Family-run hill farm campsite five minutes’ drive from Boot in Eskdale
  • West Lakes Adventure five minutes’ drive; Muncaster Castle 15 minutes
  • Lake District walks straight from the off-grid, dog-friendly pitches
When you’re after spectacular mountain views on an almost wild Lake District camping break, Hollin Head Campsite is a top contender. Set on a family-run hill farm running a flock of Herdwick sheep, the spacious pitches sit in a tree-sheltered camping meadow by the side of the burbling River Esk. There are scenic walks along the Esk from the pitches, and numerous fell and mountain hikes right from the campsite gate. If you like the sound of a pint at the end of your day, there’s a pub within five minutes’ stroll, and when foodie supplies are running low, you can stock up on pretty much everything at the local shop in Eskdale (five minutes’ drive). Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome to accompany you on your Lake District adventure, but please keep them on leads at all times while on site, due to the proximity of the sheep. Small firepits and barbecues are allowed by your pitch, just be sure to raise them off the ground to prevent the grass getting burnt. And as this peaceful, no-frills site is firmly off-grid, please note that there are no showers or electric hook-ups; simple facilities include clean portable loos, a drinking-water tap and recycling bins.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Location is amazing - right next to the river, and lots of flat spots to pitch. Liz was very helpful. I forgot toothpaste, and she gave me some. I also lost my lighter, and she gave me hers. Very generous. They sell fresh eggs and firewood at very reasonable prices.

Liked This site is a little gem which I have visited before, set along side a river with amazing views and a stone throw from Stanley Ghyll Waterfall you really don't get a better camping experience for an amazing price, Liz the owner is very welcoming and the farm stocks a few items like eggs and firewood. Liked I loved this campsite! It’s very quiet and peaceful, not very busy and set in beautiful surroundings. The only facilities are a tap for drinking water and three portaloos which are the cleanest portaloos I have ever seen!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked What a fab campsite in a beautiful setting in the valley, next to a tree-lined river. Not busy with the wonderful Liz who runs the site not letting the place get crowded so you still had the peace and quiet. She's so friendly and helpful, nothing too much trouble and let us pitch up where we wanted for the 5 days we were there. The loos were spotlessly clean with a fresh water tap nearby. It's just small details that made it an absolute pleasure to stay and we will definitely be back again, many thanks!

Disliked Nothing except we couldn't stay a lot longer!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely little camp site, amazing views of the hills and a nice little river to really give you the camp site feel, the site has a tap for water and a few portable toilets which were all spotless, Liz was very helpful and even check in a few times when the weather went bad, I wish I had brought some cash to buy some of the duck eggs the farms sells, I will definitely return to this site again

Disliked I saw a deer in the field, it ran off before I could take a picture, very rude!
