Headswood On The Wall: Smart wooden pods

General

  • Luxury glamping site 20 minutes' drive from Carlisle
  • Direct access to the Hadrian's Wall Path and other walks
  • Well-equipped pods with ensuite bathrooms and private hot tubs

A little bit of luxury and a lot of peaceful space in a quiet corner of rural Cumbria? If that sounds like a most enticing mix, head to Headswood On The Wall, a glamping site five minutes’ drive from the little market town of Brampton and 20 minutes from the city lights of Carlisle.

The wall mentioned in the site’s name is none other than Hadrian’s Wall, and with jolly good reason too: there’s direct access from here to the mighty Hadrian’s Wall Path, which follows the World Heritage Site for 84 miles from coast to coast. If that’s not enough walking, plenty of other paths can be accessed directly from the site: it’s all rather heavenly for travelling dogs (and their accompanying owners) who need a bit of fresh air and leg stretching.

Hadrian may have grabbed much of the glory, but he wasn't the only Roman who left bits of stuff behind: three fab forts at Housesteads, Birdoswald and Vindolanda are also all within a half-hour drive. Other days out nearby might take you to the Lake District or up into the Scottish Borders, both of which are within an hour’s drive.

After a day full of activity, it’s back to your smart and cosy wooden pod, kitted out with a comfy double bed, ensuite bathroom, TV, wifi and well-equipped kitchen. Luxury bed linen and towels are provided, and there’s space to eat inside or out on your deck.

And the crowning glory of all this? Each pod has its own private hot tub to soak away any aches – bliss after a day of hiking...

We have stayed in many pods, shepherds huts, etc, but this one was far luxurious than our previous glamping experiences. Most other en suite pods don't allow pets, especially if you have booked one with a hot tub, but Headswood was very dog friendly. The location was perfect, and a great base for exploring the surrounding area. The owner Simon was friendly and very accommodating. We will definitely book to stay again.

Location - lovely secluded location, great for an escape. Great for going walking aswell. A short drive away from Brampton & Carlisle.
Hottub! Who doesn't like a hottub!? Lodges - they are well equipped. Nice, warm & comfortable.
Most importantly, they are very clean. You can see extra effort is being made during this pandemic.

Brilliant. Thank you so much for the lovely comments, so chuffed that you enjoyed your stay. We're blessed with some of the darkest skies in the UK and there's no better place than the hot tub to observe them.

Pod was clean, contained all necessary amenities for a weekend away from the real world. Loved sitting in the hot tub watching the stars come out and there were lovely walks nearby.

    Disliked:

Check in and out times. Arriving by public transport was hard as all local companies operate the school run at time you can check in, so cost more for Carlisle taxi. Check out time very early so not much time to explore on the last morning.

From the manager...

Hi,
Many thanks for the comments, we're really pleased that you guys had a good time and would come back again.
Regarding the check in/out times - we're a small, personal, family run business that does everything ourselves so need the time to prepare both the pods and hot tubs thoroughly.
We do however remain flexible WHEN folk ask us!
We also offer a collection/drop off if we can accommodate you.

Local attractions

This area’s not all about what the Romans built – it was a most scenic part of the world way before any of them set foot in the land. Still as pretty as ever are strolls in the Talkin Tarn Country Park (10 minutes' drive), the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (15 minutes) and the Lake District National Park (40 minutes).

Keep your peepers peeled as you wander and you may just spot a large bird or two gliding through the sky – if you don’t happen upon any, make a visit to the Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre (25 minutes) where you can sign up to have them land right there on your arm.

For something a bit different, slope off to see the planes at Solway Aviation Museum (10 minutes) or take the car up to Carlisle (20 minutes) to visit the castle and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery or climb the walls at the Urban Adventure park.

Must see

  • Birdoswald Roman Fort (7.2 miles)
  • Carlisle Castle (7.9 miles)
  • World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop Centre (11.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Allen Banks and Staward Gorge (17.8 miles)
