  • Peaceful adults-only park a 15-minute drive from Carlisle
  • Half an hour's drive from Hadrian’s Wall and Lake District paths
  • Comfy communal cabin with magazines, books and DVDs
Fancy a bit of peace and quiet with not a young ‘un in sight? Book a holiday at Green Acres Caravan Park in Cumbria, an adults-only haven that lives up to its nature-inspired name. This friendly spot a six-mile jaunt from the history-packed city of Carlisle has been in the Brown family for three generations, making the friendly service as top-notch as the surrounding scenery. You can quiz staff on their best travel tips… or simply find a grassy patch with a view and flick through the tourist pamphlets supplied on site. For breaks from traipsing around the cracking countryside, the communal cabin’s full of comfy seats for snuggling in with one of the mags or books provided. Bucketing down outside? Hole up with entertainment courtesy of the DVD selection… along with snacks from the grocer’s in Houghton village (a five-minute drive away). For enough food to feed a small army, there's also a well-stocked supermarket less than 10 minutes from the park. Got caught up in that aforementioned shower? Laundry facilities are on hand to freshen up clothes. And if your car or caravan’s been given a mud bath too, the site has a token-operated vehicle-washing area for spraying those down.

Local attractions

History buffs rejoice: Carlisle and its castle – the storied spot where Mary Queen of Scots was locked up for a time – is under a 20-minute drive from Green Acres. And while you're in this city famed for its cathedral and racecourse, the shops are worth a bit of perusal as well… Hadrian’s Wall on your bucket list? Perfect – it’s a mere half an hour in the car to this top Roman attraction (the most visited of such in all of Britain, in fact). Or if you fancy stretching your legs, there’s always the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path and the fell walks of the Lake District, with the latter starting a 30-minute drive to the south. Tad more arduous than you were after? Shorter walks can be had right from the site: a dog-walking area begins at the top end, leading to woodlands and linking up with a public footpath. Or you could drive to Lanercost Priory, 20 minutes away, to meander around the medieval cloisters and grounds.
