  • Caravan and Motorhome Club site in grounds of a former stately home
  • Red squirrel viewing hide on site; Carlisle 25 minutes’ drive
  • Member price shown; non-members select £15/night extra or join for £69
Tucked under trees in Cumbria’s peaceful Eden Valley, Englethwaite Hall Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is set on the edge of High Stand Forest. The pitches here are backed by colourful rhododendrons from the former garden of Englethwaite Hall and have views over the Lakeland fells. It makes a handy stopover if you’re travelling on the M6, but do be warned – it’s so peaceful and green that many guests book in for one night and end up staying for a week… This site is managed by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, and it’s open to non-members as well as members, with discounted rates for members. The price displayed is the member rate; non-members will need to pay the £15/night extra or buy a £69 membership. Membership is worth considering if you’re likely to spend more than four nights at a Club site over the coming year – it brings discounts at more than 140 UK sites, plus other perks including access to tailored caravan/motorhome insurance, discounts on days out and savings on top brands. As befits a Club site, the spacious pitches are all neatly maintained and serviced. There’s a small snack shop in reception, plus a wooden hut full of maps, tourist info and books to borrow. Dogs are welcome and have their own designated exercise area, and there’s something rather special here too – a viewing hide giving you a rare chance to see local red squirrels in the wild.

Local attractions

Good news for keen walkers, as there are scenic strolls along the River Eden directly from the pitches. Meanwhile, cyclists can soon be out exploring on quiet rural lanes or bumping down the tracks through the Forestry Commission’s High Stand Forest next door to the site. When the weather is dry, you can go climbing in Great Corby Quarry (15 minutes’ drive), and Carlisle Golf Club is about the same distance away. When local history is calling, Hadrian’s Wall (and its coast-to-coast hiking path) starts at Bowness-on-Solway (40 minutes), and there are dramatic views over the Solway Firth from the shoreline. If you look at the church, you’ll see that is was partly built using stone from the large Roman fortress that once stood here, If the weather turns against you, Carlisle (25 minutes) is a lifesaver, thanks to its swimming pool, cinema, restaurants and pubs. A tour of Carlisle Castle reveals graffiti left behind by prisoners, rampart walks and the interactive Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, which has a recreated World War I trench and Morse code machines.
