General

  • Back to basics site at the White Moss walks area
  • A five-minute drive from both Grasmere and Ambleside villages
  • Hikers' paradise: walk to Grasmere lake, Rydal Cave and others

Now this is a pretty stunning spot for a rural Cumbria stay: White Moss Campsite is part of the White Moss walks area, with Grasmere on one side and Rydal Water on the other. It’s also pretty much right in the centre of the Lake District National Park, so it’s easy to get out and about to wherever you fancy roaming around the park.

Explores should, of course, start locally: there are lots of lovely paths for hikers and bike riders to follow just outside the site – it’ll take you about 20 minutes to stroll to the shores of Grasmere, and you’ll be able to wander out onto the trails of the White Moss area at your leisure. Looking a little further afield, it’s a five-minute drive to either Ambleside or Grasmere town for shops, pubs and restaurants.

Before setting off for this lovely location it’s worth noting that you’ll need to be fairly self-sufficient, as the facilities here are on the basic side (though that’s a small trade-off for such a fine spot to settle in…) Guests will have access to a washing-up sink with running water (although you’ll need to bring your own drinking water) and temporary toilets. There aren’t any showers, but the owners note that the river a few metres away is pretty refreshing if you need to splash yourself with some a bit of water…

The campsite was a good 10 minute walk from the car park which wasn’t made clear to us at the point of booking.
Sheep were in the field with us which was very stressful as we had a young puppy with us - it might be dog friendly but dog owners should be made aware of livestock!
No sign of the owner until the day we were leaving! Who then passed by saying nothing.

Good site. Had the basics a few portaloos, washing hand stations. Close to the stream. Lovely walks either way. Even as not an avid Walker some nice walks and not too difficult. Close to Ambleside

    Disliked:

‘Check in’ was a little confusing. Stated we could only arrive between 4-8 which I haven’t come across before. In my opinion quite a late check in. We had arrived earlier and hoped maybe we could check in early but as it was just a field there was no one there so assumed someone would come at 4. We went off for a drive then came back around 4.15. I went to scope it out while partner waited to bring the stuff in (a bit of a walk from either car park) I had expected someone there to help but i guess it was assumed you jist chose a spot and didn’t need to check in. Even tho this could mean someone who hadn’t booked probably could of jist turned up.
A lady did come by multiple times to check on but would of been great. We even had another group ask what they were suppose to do, did they need to sign the code to check in or would someone come.
Still lovely and would use again but maybe some confirmation beforehand on what will happe

From the manager...

The site is described as self check in and we text you during the day to explain this and what to do. So Im sorry you were expecting to meet someone but thats not how we work, 4 till 8 is pretty standard check in times accross lakes camspites.

Could be better facilities for the price. Quite expensive for just portaloos and sinks not great. Hot water source would be ideal.

Great location by the river with easy access to Rydal Water. Felt more 'wild' than the usual campsite as you're surrounded by mountains and trees with not a lot of other campers around you. Short drive into Ambleside and/or Grasmere which is ideal, you could also walk to them but we weren't so lucky with the weather.

    Disliked:

The walk from the car park whilst carrying all of your gear is a bit of a pain but you are told of this when booking.
