  • Top-notch Lake District caravan park in 130 acres of ancient forest
  • A 10-minute drive to Ambleside for Windermere boat trips
  • Dog-friendly park with woodland trails, tarn and large play area
If a trip to the Lake District National Park for you means plenty of peace, space and lovely natural views, this is the place for you. A couple of miles from Ambleside, Skelwith Fold Caravan Park is set within 130 acres of ancient woodland, providing a top-notch location for a stay in this wonderful part of the world. This location is on the site of a former country house – and while that building is long gone, a few handy replacements have sprung up, including a reception building with a shop and several bathroom blocks with all mod cons (think underfloor heating and hot showers as well as accessible facilities and spacious family rooms). There’s also a building housing a well-equipped launderette (with several washing machines and tumble dryers, plus a drying room) and a library so you’ll have something to read while you wait for your clothes. That launderette may well come in useful, as this is a place that lends itself to getting just a bit mucky – for starters, there’s a fab four-acre open space for the kids to run about and play games, plus a large play area with a zipwire, scramble nets and loads of other play kit. There are also woodland trails running through the grounds, leading to the tarn and nature hide, with red squirrels, woodpeckers and deer to spot along the way. This is a large site, but it’s not a place that ever feels crowded, as pitches have been cleverly tucked away in tree-lined glades around the park, giving each area a cosy woodland atmosphere – just the thing for your peaceful Lake District break.

What customers say

This beautifully maintained, woodland campsite receives widespread praise for its immaculately clean facilities, particularly the warm and spacious shower blocks with underfloor heating. Guests consistently highlight the friendly and helpful staff, the stunning natural surroundings, and the abundance of wildlife. Pitches are generally well-sized and the site's location is considered ideal for exploring the Lake District, with good access to local amenities and walking routes. Some guests noted Wi-Fi can be weak and a few found the touring area to be like a carpark.

Liked Play park was great for the kids.
Nature trails and walks into nearby towns were great.
Some of the facilities were lovely, others not so.
The shop was well supplied.
The food truck on some evenings was delicious (pre order for a specific time, it gets very busy)
The laundry and drying room were very handy for a wet week!

Disliked The facilities closest to us were very run down, with one dribbly shower. The other facilities you needed a code to get in, not 100% sure why?
It seemed more set up for the static caravans, not tourers.
Our pitch (closer to the park for the kids) was a fair walk to the nicer facilities and washing up etc.
Unfortunately, one of the reception staff members came across as quite abrupt and unhelpful during our stay.
I appreciate that everyone can have an off day, and perhaps she was having a particularly difficult week. However, the interactions felt dismissive and did not reflect the level of customer service I would have expected. A more welcoming and helpful approach would have made a significant difference to our experience.

From the manager: Dear Jess, thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We’re pleased to hear that you enjoyed the play park, nature trails, food truck and laundry facilities, and that there were plenty of things that made your stay enjoyable.

We’re sorry to hear that some of the facilities near your pitch weren’t up to the standard you expected, and we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We’re also disappointed to hear about your experience with a member of our reception team. Most of our reviews regularly highlight how friendly and helpful our staff are, so it is a real shame that on this occasion you were left feeling dismissed and unwelcome. We certainly don’t want anyone to leave feeling that way.

We completely appreciate that everyone can have an off day, but the level of service you experienced should still reflect the welcoming approach we strive to provide. Your comments will be shared with the team so we can address this appropriately.

Thank you again for your honest feedback. We hope we’ll have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and provide the experience you should have received.

Liked The camp was very very well kept. The wardens were very friendly and offered help all the time. Bathroom and toilets were the best I have come across, clean and tidy and very warm. The pitch was very clean and easy to get to.

Disliked Not a dislike but if you’re not a walker or hiker you have to use your car.
The road in is a little bit tight
If they put a bar and restaurant in it would be a fantastic camp

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Graham, thank you so much for your lovely feedback. We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed the cleanliness of the site, facilities and pitches, and that our wardens were friendly and helpful throughout your stay.

We completely understand your point about getting around without a car. While we don’t have a bar or restaurant on site, we feel that adding these would change the peaceful, natural experience that we work hard to offer. Fortunately, there are several pubs and restaurants within walking distance of the park, so guests can still enjoy a meal or a drink without needing to travel far. There are also local taxi services available, and there is a bus stop just outside the park gates, which provides an alternative for those who prefer not to drive.

It’s wonderful to know you enjoyed your stay overall, and we hope to welcome you back again in the future.

Local attractions

As well as having top-notch facilities, Skelwith Fold Caravan Park is in a top-notch location for a Lake District break. There are lots of great walks and activities nearby, and staff are always on hand to dish out ideas and tips to help you make the best of it all. Of course you’ll want to see some lakes – perhaps starting with Tarn Hows (15 minutes' drive) before moving on to a steam boat ride on Coniston Water (20 minutes) and a tour of Rydal Water (15 minutes), taking in Rydal Cave and Rydal Mount and Gardens along the way. The big one, of course, is Windermere, just a few minutes' drive from the park and with boat trips available from Ambleside (10 minutes). Around the lake there are various attractions to stop off at, including the National Trust sites at Wray (10 minutes) and Hill Top (20 minutes). If you've got the kids, look instead to places like the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (20 minutes) and Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (25 minutes).
