  • In spectacular scenery close to the Sandstone Trail and local pubs
  • Under an hour's drive from the Welsh coast
  • Near lakes and fisheries for angling; 30 minutes' drive from Chester
Picture yourself sitting on a bench in the sheltered stable yard in the company of a gang of hens, then taking a stroll to the fluffy yard cat Rio or to buy some fresh free-range eggs from your host… If you think that picture seems pretty agreeable, set off to Larkhill Cottage Camping and Caravan Site, in the Cheshire countryside, just under 10 minutes’ drive from Malpas. As an added bonus, this place looks out over some of the area’s most stunning scenery, with views towards Clwyd, Shropshire, the Wirral, Merseyside and the Peak District. And to help you get out and explore, it also happens to be a mere five minutes’ walk from the Sandstone Trail… Friendly owner Claire has made sure her site has plenty of space for family games, as well as plenty of handy facilities. Amenities include a kitchen (with a fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, kettle and liquid soaps) and a toilet that’s got a basin with hot and cold running water (but please note you’ll need to bring your own toilet paper). There's also a combined shower and toilet cubicle, handily enough. For meals and supplies, there’s a general store and a fish and chip shop in Malpas (five minutes' drive away), and a good Indian restaurant is three minutes' drive away. Whitchurch is 10 minutes' drive away, with a choice of supermarkets as well as a regular farmers' market.

What customers say

This is a peaceful, well-maintained campsite with spacious pitches and a friendly, helpful owner. Facilities, including toilets, showers, and a communal kitchen, are consistently reported as very clean. Guests appreciate the rural location and the on-site animals. While phone signal is weak, this is considered by many to contribute to the site's tranquil atmosphere. Minor points include a charge for showers and the need to bring your own toilet roll.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely, scenic site with lots to do in the surrounding area. Friendly welcome on arrival from the owner, Claire (who also went out of her way to recommend and research places to go and things to do nearby) . Spotlessly clean facilities. Loved it!

Disliked Nothing, just having to go home and leave the peace and tranquility of the site (and also Milo, the resident cat, who was so sweet and fussy)!!

Electric grass pitch

Liked Excellent site. Lovely and quiet. We all loved the animals.

Disliked Toilet got a bit messy in the morning. If staying for more than one night might need some more shower facilities than is available.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your 10/10 rating.i apologise if some campers did not clean up after themselves . I do check and clean both toilets and shower first thing in the morning and periodically throughout the day. As you can imagine, when the campsite is full and especially when children are in and out all day despite the probability that I've just cleaned, there are hopefully rare occasions when the facilities are not as spotless as I would like despite my best efforts.

A great weekend and if I am in that area I would chose to stay again.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The owner Claire is wonderful and helpful from the day you arrive to the day you leave. Everything was as expected and better. The facilities are well kept (unless a bad guest arrives) The kitchen has everything you could possibly want.

Disliked My only note would be that on the description it stated there was plenty for children to keep them occupied such as toys and games available. Unfortunately there was non - but other campers were happy to share with my 2 year old grandchild and she loved the horses and cats too.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your great review. I didn't realise it says on pitch up that there are toys available as there never have been, except years ago when I let some children play with my lovely set of giant wooden garden jenga until someone used them for fire wood. I'll get that misinformation removed.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really nice site with good, clean and reliable facilities.
Huge pitches with plenty of spare space for the kids to play. Far enough away from others for privacy but close enough to socialise as well.
Great location with a short walk to the sandstone trail and malpas just a stones throw away. Would happily go back again.

Disliked Feel bad saying as there’s nothing anyone can do about it but there is zero phone signal so if you need your devices to work or keep in contact with family etc it’s not ideal. That’s not a reflection on the site it’s the whole area.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for your lovely review with photos. The bad phone signal is the bane of my life.

Local attractions

Setting off for a stroll on the Sandstone Trail is a great idea, of course – but if you fancy a different way to take in the scenery perhaps you’d prefer to settle down for a while at Hampton Springs fishing ponds, a minute’s walk away, or take your golf clubs over to Carden park golf course (15 minutes’ drive). For something a bit more kid-friendly, there are play areas and events in the gardens at Cholmondeley Castle (three minutes’ drive), or you could take a tasty trip to The Ice Cream Farm (20 minutes), which has a whole lot of activities as well as the ice cream itself. And of course, there's always the option of hitting the beach, given that the North Wales coast is less than an hour's drive away. Chester (half an hour) is another great place for a day out, whether you plan to go shopping, visit the castle, stroll the historic streets or stop by to see the animals in the zoo. If you’d like to see more animals, take a trip to the Blue Planet Aquarium (35 minutes) or book in to see a showjumping event at Bolesworth Castle (10 minutes).
