  • In spectacular scenery close to the Sandstone Trail and local pubs
  • Under an hour's drive from the Welsh coast
  • Near lakes and fisheries for angling; 30 minutes' drive from Chester
Picture yourself sitting on a bench in the sheltered stable yard in the company of a gang of hens, then taking a stroll to pet friendly and fluffy yard cat Rio or to buy some fresh free-range eggs from your host… If you think that picture seems pretty agreeable, you’ll need to set off to Larkhill Cottage Camping and Caravan Site, in the Cheshire countryside just under 10 minutes’ drive from Malpas. As an added bonus, this place looks out over some of the area’s most stunning scenery, with views towards Clwyd, Shropshire, the Wirral, Merseyside and Peak District. And to help you get out and explore, it also happens to be a mere five minutes’ walk from the Sandstone Trail… Friendly owner Claire has made sure her site has plenty of space for family games, as well as plenty of handy facilities. Amenities include a kitchen (with a fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, kettle and toaster) and a toilet that’s got a basin with hot and cold running water (but please note you’ll need to bring your own soap and toilet paper). There's also a shower, handily enough. For meals and supplies, there’s a general store in Malpas and the site is two minutes from a chip shop and a good Indian restaurant. Whitchurch is 10 minutes' drive away, with a choice of supermarkets as well as a regular farmers' market.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The peace and quiet, beautiful site. Nothing to much trouble for owner. Kitted out kitchen is perfect, no cooking in the rain here. Just take your little cooker into kitchen that’s got microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge. Even washing up liquids and tea towels. Claire has thought of everything bless her. Walk in shower room with toilet and sink. Ideal for those with limited mobility. There’s also toilet and sink next to kitchen. Mobile data is best in stable yard but you go away to leave this at home…. If you love horses/ponies Claire has 3 beautiful girls..

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The facilities were clean and the grounds were spacious. The owner seemed lovely.

Disliked: After spending £70 on a pitch I was quite taken back that you had to put a £1 in a meter for a shower I would have thought that would have been in the price. Location was ok but a little out of the way from anything.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. On pitch up it clearly states how far.my camp site is from shops and pubs. Five Minutes drive. The beauty and benefits of site is tranquility. There are sites next to pubs etc but the down side is there may be traffic noise. I'm sorry you felt £1 was too much to pay for a ten minute shower. Many camp sites charge the same as I do but do not offer a fully equipped kitchen with hot water all day and free use of fridge freezer washing machine kettles and microwaves.

Clare was a lovely hostess and generally we enjoyed our stay.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: It was beautiful small and compact campsite, wonderfully located with easy access to many lovely places to visit and picturesque walks. The campsite was well equipped and serviced.

Disliked: The non-electric camping pitches are located down the slope of the camping field right next to the river and the ground became quite saturated when it rained.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and I'm pleased that overall you enjoyed your stay. I have been battling to keep everywhere clean during this very wet weather and I'm sorry you felt it necessary to give six points for cleanliness. The Midlands, Cheshire and parts of north Wales have experienced more than twice the normal rainfall for September during the last few days. My site has remained remarkably firm because it slopes gently down to the small brook.

Exactly what we needed.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A lovely small campsite in a beautiful area. The kitchen facilities with fridge, washing machine, microwaves and a small sitting room to one side was very clean and although we only used it to do our washing up was very welcome. There is a toilet with shower and second toilet at the back of the kitchen so plenty of facilities for the size of camp. The owner was very welcoming, greeting us on arrival and pointing out where everything was and the closest shop (a very well stocked farm shop 2 minutes drive away) We were the only people staying so told could set up anywhere we wanted which was nice. Although we were the only people there the site had plenty of space and looked like everyone would have plenty of room even when full. Sadly we were only there for one night trying a new tent we had recently purchased, not having been camping for quite a few years, but we loved every moment and wished we could have stayed longer.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Owner was friendly, the baby loved being able to see the chickens, horses and the yard cat. Cat was super friendly. Large pitches with plenty of space.

Disliked: Not an issue with the campsite at all but we had no signal or Internet. Not a problem though for us :)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review. I agree, the Internet is a problem.. Its very poor in the whole area. I've been on to my provider and BT. on countless occasions. When I was at the Royal Welsh Show in July I spotted the openreach stand. I explained my problem and they were sympathetic and helpful. They advised that the government are pledged to guarantee a minimum Internet speed to every household in the UK. Great I thought and duly rang the unbiased department phone number they provided optimistic that with the government pledge to cover the first £3,500 to improve our coverage, our problem would be solved. I had a reply within two days. My hopes were well and truly dashed when I was told it would cost between £9,000,00 and £1,500,00 to provide a decent Internet speed! I'm told we will eventually have high speed cable, but until then I can only apologise.

Route directions

If approaching from A49 from the north, turn right signed Cholmondeley, opposite the Cholmondeley arms, vice versa from south. Go through the woods and Shay Lane is the second left, turn opposite a gatehouse to Cholmondeley castle. Also look out for a sign for Hampton Springs Fishery. The site is opposite the fishery. Drive through the stable yard and under the arch to the site. Hook-ups are on the left, past the hen run. Don't drive on the far right of the field as it can sometimes be wet. If approaching from A41 south, Shay Lane is the last turn to the right before reaching the Hampton roundabout, again see sign for Hampton Springs Fishery. If approaching from the north, Shay Lane is first left after the Hampton Roundabout. Up a fairly steep narrow lane and the site is in the dip on the left. If the gate is shut, don't worry: it won't be locked even though there's a chain visible.

Local attractions

Setting off for a stroll on the Sandstone Trail is a great idea, of course – but if you fancy a different way to take in the scenery perhaps you’d prefer to settle down for a while at Hampton Springs fishing ponds, a minute’s walk away, or take your golf clubs over to Carden park golf course (15 minutes’ drive). For something a bit more kid-friendly, there are play areas and events in the gardens at Cholmondeley Castle (three minutes’ drive), or you could take a tasty trip to The Ice Cream Farm (20 minutes), which has a whole lot of activities as well as the ice cream itself. And of course, there's always the option of hitting the beach, given that the North Wales coast is less than an hour's drive away. Chester (half an hour) is another great place for a day out, whether you plan to go shopping, visit the castle, stroll the historic streets or stop by to see the animals in the zoo. If you’d like to see more animals, take a trip to the Blue Planet Aquarium (35 minutes) or book in to see a showjumping event at Bolesworth Castle (10 minutes).
