  • In spectacular scenery close to the Sandstone Trail and local pubs
  • Under an hour's drive from the Welsh coast
  • Near lakes and fisheries for angling; 30 minutes' drive from Chester
Picture yourself sitting on a bench in the sheltered stable yard in the company of a gang of hens, then taking a stroll to the fluffy yard cat Rio or to buy some fresh free-range eggs from your host… If you think that picture seems pretty agreeable, set off to Larkhill Cottage Camping and Caravan Site, in the Cheshire countryside, just under 10 minutes’ drive from Malpas. As an added bonus, this place looks out over some of the area’s most stunning scenery, with views towards Clwyd, Shropshire, the Wirral, Merseyside and the Peak District. And to help you get out and explore, it also happens to be a mere five minutes’ walk from the Sandstone Trail… Friendly owner Claire has made sure her site has plenty of space for family games, as well as plenty of handy facilities. Amenities include a kitchen (with a fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave and kettle) and a toilet that’s got a basin with hot and cold running water (but please note you’ll need to bring your own soap and toilet paper). There's also a combined shower and toilet cubicle, handily enough. For meals and supplies, there’s a general store and a fish and chip shop in Malpas (five minutes' drive away), and a good Indian restaurant is three minutes' drive away. Whitchurch is 10 minutes' drive away, with a choice of supermarkets as well as a regular farmers' market.

What customers say

This is a peaceful, well-maintained small campsite with spacious pitches. Visitors consistently praise the friendly and helpful owner, Claire, and the clean facilities, particularly the kitchen area. The presence of animals like horses and chickens is a highlight for many, especially children. While some mention the £1 charge for the shower and the need to bring own toilet roll, the overall sentiment is very positive, with many planning return visits.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great host, great communication and information. Nice few facilities on camp, kitchen and showers. Easy to get hold of and helped when i had a flat tide on my bike. Made the stay

From the manager: Thank you Kenny. I was concerned for you riding your bicycle all the way back to Liverpool and do hope you made it home without further mishap.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Easy to find. Instructions very clear. Peaceful. Great to have kitchen goods, such as microwave, kettle, fridge freezer and a room to sit if needed (nb we didn't use).
Great to be able to book odd nights.

Disliked Only 1 shower and £1 coin required. It runs for 10 minutes, great for some, but a long time if camp full and you're waiting.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. I'm really sorry you feel you wouldn't return. You mention that you didn't find my site child friendly yet most campers do and I strive to make it so. I would welcome any feedback you could give on how I could improve. I have set the shower on a ten minute timer to strike a balance on giving plenty of time to have a good shower, but at the same time, preventing people from spending ages whilst others are waiting. I strive to keep all the facilities as clean as possible by patrolling many times a day.

Nice quiet site, lovely location.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lady friendly & helpful but didn't feel over-watched.
Lovely views.
Lovely area with lots of local attractions. Would have liked to have stayed longer to do more of the Sandstone trail.

Disliked The weeds near the chickens could do with pulling if I had to be picky - only cos I have a lil boy but other than that was great! Nothing bad! X

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Glad you enjoyed your stay. I let the wildflowers grow a little along the hen run.but they are. Not. Tall. It. Stops the hens being frightened by dogs poking their noses through the chicken wire.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovley place to stay , we had a relaxing time, was only for 1 night so our 4 year old had the experience of camping and he loved it , we just need to invest in a bigger tent .. also shower , toilet, and a kitchen with microwaves are available to use ..

Disliked Nothing to dislike

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your good review Neil. Good to know your child has taken to camping and you can now invest in better equipment.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely owner, location and animals. Site was clean.

Disliked Bit short on facilities and most groups on site were noisy until midnight with no attempt to get it under control. Dogs barked day and night, made sleeping difficult and put a significant damper on the weekend

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Mike. I have replied but stupidly put on wrong customers review. So please can you read. I also meant to add that I couldn't understand what you meant by lack of facilities as nobody has said this before. If the pitch up review system allows could you clarify. Thank you.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Amazing location, everything you needed as we didn’t have the electricity pitch,Claire was more than happy to accommodate to anything, had a lovely walk in to the town, will definitely be back again

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Mike. I'm so sorry to hear this. I know the group in question and I did speak to them at 10.00 when I shut the hens in and asked them to turn music down and asked their children to play quietly. I heard the occasional yap from dogs but did hear anything at night, however, from my house I wouldn't be able to hear. I would always stress in these situations to please message me and I will come out immediately and deal with the problem. Over the ten years I've run my site I've only had to do this a handful of times. In fact, I now have a note on pitch up to say loud behaviour and bad language will not be tolerated as this is a family site and the offenders will be asked to leave. Again, sincere apologies.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely small campsite. After a week on the road, it was nice to have a proper kitchen to wash up in. The girls loved the ‘secret path’ too. Not a dislike but a heads up, you will need to take your non-recyclable waste home with you.

The best thing by far was that when I messed up the booking, Claire went out of her way to fix it. I booked for the wrong night and unfortunately Claire was fully booked for the second night but she made all the arrangements to book us in a site round the corner. It was completely my fault but Claire went above and beyond to fix it.

From the manager: Hi Marina. Thank you for your great review. Just to clarify an error on my. Pitch. Up details. The only stuff campers have to take home is unwanted camping equipment. In the past I've been overwhelmed. Non recyclable waste such as nappies etc, I collect from the bins in the toilets and these go in my black bin. I have requested an emendment on pitch up.

Electric grass pitch

Liked We loved our stay at Larkhill cottage, couldn't fault it. Claire the owner was lovely. The kitchen was well equipped and so useful to us, shower/toilets were clean. A small and peaceful site with plenty of space for children to run around. Enjoyed spotting birds from our tent. Our little boy loved the animals too. We would definitely stay again.

Route directions

If approaching from A49 from the north, turn right signed Cholmondeley, opposite the Cholmondeley arms, vice versa from south. Go through the woods and Shay Lane is the second left, turn opposite a gatehouse to Cholmondeley castle. Also look out for a sign for Hampton Springs Fishery. The site is opposite the fishery. Drive through the stable yard and under the arch to the site. Hook-ups are on the left, past the hen run. Don't drive on the far right of the field as it can sometimes be wet. If approaching from A41 south, Shay Lane is the last turn to the right before reaching the Hampton roundabout, again see sign for Hampton Springs Fishery. If approaching from the north, Shay Lane is first left after the Hampton Roundabout. Up a fairly steep narrow lane and the site is in the dip on the left. If the gate is shut, don't worry: it won't be locked even though there's a chain visible. Look out for the white boulders in the grass verge marking the site entrance.

Local attractions

Setting off for a stroll on the Sandstone Trail is a great idea, of course – but if you fancy a different way to take in the scenery perhaps you’d prefer to settle down for a while at Hampton Springs fishing ponds, a minute’s walk away, or take your golf clubs over to Carden park golf course (15 minutes’ drive). For something a bit more kid-friendly, there are play areas and events in the gardens at Cholmondeley Castle (three minutes’ drive), or you could take a tasty trip to The Ice Cream Farm (20 minutes), which has a whole lot of activities as well as the ice cream itself. And of course, there's always the option of hitting the beach, given that the North Wales coast is less than an hour's drive away. Chester (half an hour) is another great place for a day out, whether you plan to go shopping, visit the castle, stroll the historic streets or stop by to see the animals in the zoo. If you’d like to see more animals, take a trip to the Blue Planet Aquarium (35 minutes) or book in to see a showjumping event at Bolesworth Castle (10 minutes).
