Views from my pitch

  • Family-run park a mile from Oulton Park Circuit
  • Set in the countryside with views over the Cheshire plains
  • Shop on site selling locally sourced bacon, eggs and sausages
If you're off to Oulton Park Circuit to see the fast cars, you might want a speedy return to base after a long day of envy. And you'll have it at Cheshire's Elm Cottage Touring Park, which is just a mile from the circuit as well as within easy reach of other popular pulls in the area like Chester, Delamere Forest, the north Wales coast, Snowdonia, the Peak District, Liverpool, Manchester… Elm Cottage is family owned and run, set in Cheshire countryside and surrounded by farming fields with a view across the Cheshire plains. It has an eco-friendly toilet block with free showers, constant hot water, underfloor heating, hairdryers and an easy access shower for family users or disabled guests. There's also a big exercise area for dogs and a play area, a large selection of tourist info at reception, and a shop on site selling locally sourced bacon, eggs and sausages plus basic grocery and non-food items as well as soft drinks and locally made ice cream. A popular pub serving good food and ales is a short distance from the site entrance and two pubs are in the local village of Little Budworth. If you fancy pizza, the Elm Cottage owners dish it up every Friday evening during the summer, freshly made in the site's new pizza oven.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely caravan & touring park. Very spacious good size pitches & well kept site. Great dog walking area. Shower block very clean. Very welcoming helpful staff. We were offered a gravel pitch instead of the grass one we booked as the weather was so bad. Great pub nearby doing lovely food. On site shop selling lots of basics & directions to walks in the area.

Disliked: The pitch we were on was very close to the amenities & various activities on the site. Our 2nd morning we were woken to sound of digging using very noisy electrical equipment which carried on during the morning. Next day a huge sewage tanker arrived presumably removing waste. Smell was awful. There was deliveries & general maintenance. It was not a peaceful stay & we only booked 3 nights. Not what you want on holiday. I would advise having a pitch away from the main drag.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Loved the friendly atmosphere. Site was not-too-large, staff really friendly. Quite a families with school-age kids (& below) who seemed to have a lot of fun, but weren’t noisy at night. It looked to be pet-friendly, but it was mostly smaller dogs I saw (all well behaved & lovely) Facilities include toilet/shower bloc (clean & good condition), washing up areas, freezer (for campers), little shop (open 9-5 I think), great-sized playground (mostly aimed at school-age kids), dog-walking route. Decent amount of space for kids to run around (no kites tho due to an a small overhead power line!) Lots of things to do a short drive away, with Delamere Forest, Beeston Castle, the Ice Cream Factory and the lovely village of Tarporley within 20 mins drive or less. Loads of great places to eat for a posh pub lunch. And on site they have a pizza oven which they fire up (Fridays & Wednesdays if demand is enough) which is definitely worth a try if you get a chance! In summary- great, friendly place, it looks like the people there really care & it shows.

Disliked: Site was excellent, only very minor thing is that most activities were a short car drive away, so unless you are willing to brave the narrow Cheshire country roads, you really need to hop into a car to go for a walk, and most external places (Delamere, Beeston) charge so you’ll have to budget that in.

From the manager: Thanks for your really detailed review Susanna. We do really care & I'm glad you noticed. Our team of staff are fantastic & they treat the park as if it were their own. You make a good point about needed a car, particularly for children's activities. It's great that we've got pubs in walking distance, but you do need to get in your car for more adventurous activities. We hope to see you again soon.

Local attractions

The park is perfectly placed for days out and activities for all ages and tastes, whether you want city days out, tramps through woodland or historic houses. Oulton Park racing circuit is a mile away and has a programme of events throughout the year, while Little Budworth Country Park is walkable from the site. The nearby village of Tarporley has designer shopping, tearooms and swish restaurants. Bolesworth Castle and its many events including CarFest North and international horse shows is 10 miles from Elm Cottage Touring Park, and old and rather fab Chester is 12 miles west with decent park and ride facilities. Famed Chester Zoo is also within easy reach. Stargazers should shoot along to the Jodrell Bank Observatory and Discovery Centre 15 miles away at Macclesfield, an educational establishment with visitor centre, arboretum and the mammoth Lovell Telescope. Other excellent day trips are around in all directions, like active days out in Snowdonia National Park or around the Welsh coast, hiking the Peak District or city shopping and sightseeing in Liverpool and Manchester.
