  • Relaxed 30-acre campsite bordering the Trent and Mersey Canal
  • A 10-minute drive from Northwich; Chester 40 minutes
  • On-site tea rooms serving breakfasts, coffees, scones and cakes
Whether you're in the mood for merrymaking, meandering through the countryside or day trips to Manchester city centre, Oakwood Marina is a relaxed waterside campsite in rural Cheshire that ticks all the right boxes. As it borders the Trent and Mersey Canal, a wonderful waterway that runs all the way from Derby to Liverpool, walking and cycling routes along the towpath can be accessed in a few seconds – an excellent way to take in the scenery of the surrounding Cheshire Plains. The marina runs for almost a mile along the canal and hosts a constantly changing collection of up to 90 colourful narrowboats, while the campsite is similarly spacious, covering roughly 30 acres of gently sloping land with views over the water's edge. The surrounding fields are either grazed by cows or mown for hay just a couple of times a year, meaning there's lots of long grass around to shelter passing wildlife (a few footpaths have been cut between the pitches to help guide you through the fields). Guests staying at Oakwood Marina are welcome to light campfires and barbecues (in the designated areas) and have access to useful marina facilities like a laundry room, toilet block, showers and washing-up area. There's also an on-site tea rooms, where you can stop for all-day breakfasts, coffees, scones, cakes and other goodies. To top it all off, there's a pizza trailer, plus an outdoor bar open from 4pm until late. Oakwood Marina is just under a mile from a local organic farm shop and roughly two miles from Rudheath, where there is a railway station and a well-stocked supermarket.

Fully-serviced grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Huge site, nice location, noticed some comments about noisy aircraft - it's not under a flight path but Manchester Airport isn't far away and yes you do hear some planes. If you live in a city you won't even notice the noise as the sounds of nature do their level best to drown them out. For tents the pitches looked great, well spaced out, feeling of seclusion with unmown grass around (paths and pitch kept well maintained)

Disliked: Facilities. Miss read the details - that's on me. When I read one gents toilet one ladies I miss took it to be one Gents toilet block, one female toilet block etc. The cafe, clearly part of the mariner (all built in 2018) has it's own toilets. Four doors at the back of the building. One gents, one ladies, one disabled plus one that says Shower. Behind each door is one toilet, one sink. The shower has - you guessed it - one shower and a sink) Campers get to share these along with patrons from the Barge Bar (a small Barge that's out on dry land at the side of a carpark that's converted into a tiny pub) There are two, possibly three sets of two Portaloos across the rest of the site (bring a torch). One of those sets also has two wooden outdoor showers, and two sinks for presumably giving yourself, not just your dishes a wash. Pitches for campervans/motorhomes are few (4 marked out possibly a few more that are not) very close to each other. Very easy to set up your pitch and find someone rolling up "next" to you and thinking you've used their space. Also layout a bit peculiar. Campervans/motorhome pitches are the back one of three segregated areas. One and two are car parks, in front of those is the Cafe/bar/bricks and mortar toilet. So campervans/motorhomes have lovely view of the carparks. Strange planning decision.

Bell tent

Liked: Friendly, welcoming staff and warm welcome upon arrival. Beautiful views. Very clean, well equipped and comfy bed. Bonus that everybody is not ontop of each other, very well spread out. Pizza bar and boat bar was excellent in the evening.

Disliked: Lack of proper shower/wash facilities but we only stayed one night so didn't bother us.

From the manager: Thank you for the positive review! We're delighted you enjoyed our friendly staff, beautiful views, and comfy accommodation. We appreciate your feedback about the shower facilities and their are due to be updated in the near future. We hope to see you again soon!

Fully-serviced grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Location is great with views of the marina and the canal boats travelling by on the canal. Food in the cafeteria was good hot and well presented and reasonable price. Dogs allowed and doggy was treated to a cooked sausage by the staff which was rather sweet. Staff were friendly on site and informative. Good for overnight stop.

Disliked: For site which caters for a number of people toilets and showers were in short supply unless you count porta loos dotted around. The showers and toilet rear of cafeteria also lacked hand wash and had a distinct bad odour about them.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for sharing your experience with us! We're glad to hear you enjoyed the picturesque location, tasty cafeteria food, and the thoughtful gesture towards your furry friend. We appreciate your feedback regarding the restroom facilities. Due to our toilets being connected to the on site waste treatment plant, at certain periods there can be a slight odour. Rest assured, we have taken note of your comments and are actively working to improve the situation. Additionally, we want to inform you that there are three full-flushing toilets available in the main building, and we have also installed four outdoor heated showers across the site for your convenience. We hope to welcome you back for an even better experience in the future!

Local attractions

Start off with some good old-fashioned industrial heritage at the Lion Salt Works in the nearby village of Marston (10 minutes' drive), or visit the Anderton Boat Lift (15 minutes) to see how ingenious Victorian engineers negotiated a 50-foot drop between the river Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal. The handsome market town of Northwich (10 minutes) and its bustling high street should be next on your agenda – especially if your stay at Oakwood Marina coincides with its monthly artisanal market. For cities where there's always something on, you could head to Chester (40 minutes) or Manchester (40 minutes), both of which have top museums, kid-friendly attractions, shopping opportunities and historic quarters to explore. Need a breather after all that? Fresh air – and plenty of it – is available at Marbury Country Park (15 minutes), Tatton Park (20 minutes) or Dunham Massey (25 minutes), a National Trust-managed property with a deer park and garden that makes the place well worth visiting all year round.
