  • Wild camping meadow for groups in the Cheshire countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from Chester and 45 minutes to New Brighton’s beach
  • A mile from pubs, restaurants and shops
Got a gang of friends or family looking for a group camping break? Farndon Tent Camping Meadow is a good place for those who want to have a sociable break (and that includes bringing dogs too if you like). Out in the pretty Cheshire countryside, 20 minutes’ drive away from Chester and 45 minutes from New Brighton’s beach, this is a place where the pitches are specially geared up for small group getaways. The two and half-acre meadow is relatively flat with a slightly sloping, area and plenty of space for groups to kick back and have some real quality time. Handily, there’s room enough here for each group to bring up to five tents (including gazebos), 15 guests and five cars or vans (but no motorhomes or large vans are allowed). This is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, meaning there's plenty of wildlife around too. It's a wild camping site, so the only facility to speak of is a compost toilet (if you have a chemical toilet you'll need to take the waste away with you). There’s good wifi reception though, so it’s not too tricky to plot out your plan of action… perhaps a local nature trail? Or into Farndon (25 minutes’ walk) for pubs, restaurants and shops? The site has firepits available should you want to use them.

Local attractions

If you’re visiting with kids in tow, simple amusements are simple to track down. There’s a treehouse-themed adventure park at BeWILDerwood Cheshire (15 minutes’ drive) for monkey-style play. Finger-licking ice cream (of around 40 flavours, no less) can be found at The Ice Cream Farm (15 minutes) and followed up with playing with farm animals or quad biking activities. New Brighton (45 minutes) has plenty to do for all sizes too. Take it easy on the beach, go for a stroll on the prom or take advantage of the free parking and set sail on the ferry to Liverpool. The city of Liverpool (50 minutes) is a splendid spot indeed for a host of things, from museums and the shops, bars and restaurants of the Royal Albert Docks to The Beatles tours, stopping at The Cavern Club where the band once played. Historic Chester has lots for those interested in old times, and to add to that, the Erddig (20 minutes) country house and estate has a bunch of old family collections. In the Chester area, however, a little shopping might tempt you too. The Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet (half an hour) is a good spot for bargain hunting. Meanwhile, Chester Zoo (25 minutes), is home to animals from the tropics, deserts and rainforests.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked The quietness and tidiness of the campsite and the easy to follow links and information sent by the landowner

Disliked Needs onsite toilets instead of portoloos- route down to the campsite needs the bushes cutting back as it is quite tight

From the manager: Thank you so much. Im very glad you enjoyed it. Jon.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Portaloo was well stocked up with tissues. Wild camping vibes. Excellent location Indian, Chinese, chippy, cafe and pub all a short walk across the field.

Disliked Previous campers had left a bag of rubbish with food and paper plates which was all over the floor outside the loo. Don't park next to the road.

From the manager: Hello Jessica, thanks for the nice review and i am glad you had a nice time. However this is not my meadow. I can assure you i would never leave rubbish on there its always clean and tidy. All well that ends well though. Jon.
