  • Dog-friendly site on the River Worth, with access to the Pennine Way
  • In Brontë country, two miles from Haworth’s Brontë Parsonage Museum
  • Excellent walks to Hebden Bridge; a five-minute walk to a pub
Always up for a good long walk or a getaway in an area packed with literary history? If your answer is yes – to both or either question – get your bags packed and make your way to Ponden Mill in West Yorkshire. The Pennine Way, a long-distance national trail, crosses near the mill, and there’s also access to excellent walks to Hebden Bridge or further away. This site is also part of the area known as Brontë country, so you’ll be surrounded by the landscapes that inspired the Brontë sisters’ classics. To explore those literary connections, you could start by strolling the two miles to the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth (five minutes’ drive), although there are many more Brontë sites in the area – including the inspiration for ‘Wuthering Heights’ on the hill facing the mill. On site, you’ll be staying at a grassy woodland area alongside the River Worth. All pitches are generous in size, with most of them placed on flat, well-drained ground. There are excellent views too, as the site sits underneath Scar Top Chapel. Within 100 metres of the pitches, the main facilities include toilets, showers and a washing-up area. Dogs are also welcome. A pub is a five-minute walk away, and there are grocery stores in Haworth.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Booked a non-electric pitch for our VW campervan for one night. Nice to have the choice of where to pitch. Richard, one of the owners, was very welcoming and we even managed to buy a few drinks from the bar and sat outside by the lovely open fire (Richard explained that the bar and cafe are usually open on Sundays - as it's mainly a wedding venue). Loved how peaceful the site was and the nature aspect. Also very handy for Haworth. We did notice that there was only one shower and one loo for men, but we were lucky, only 2 solo campers when we stayed, so felt like we had the place to ourselves.

Disliked A personal pet peeve of mine- only an outside sink to wash up in - but it did have hot water - thankfully it didn't rain when i needed to wash up!

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Pleasant enough staff helpful for advising where to go for walks. Stunning views in the area and main town of Haworth a short drive ans is so pretty and quaint.

Disliked No grass pitch it was more gravel. Felt like we were staying in a car park. Toilet's were ok but no hot water and no one around to ask. All in all disappointed as the photos online looked beautiful.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely location, level pitches, friendly staff, nice cafe.

Disliked As with other reviewers the lack of hot water in the toilets was an issue. We were told to let them know if it happened which we did but it didn’t make any difference. Also the lights over the wash basins in the ladies didn’t work so it was dark and impossible to use the mirrors.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Friendly staff
Site was flat, some sites have had a slope
Pretty place in the sunlight
Clean facilities
Ground was soft with very few rocks

Disliked I know the site cannot do anything about the wind but a few trees, bushes or hedge to shelter the tents would be my only thought. as the wind was blowing a gale (nothing the site can do) but I did have the big tent pegs to secure my tent.

Again, nothing the site can do but very little signal on the mobile network. The site had WiFi though at one end of the site.

Local attractions

Climb aboard the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (10 minutes’ drive) at Haworth station, and travel south to Oxenhope or north to Keighley. The line and the surrounding area provide the background to several scenes in the 1970s film ‘The Railway Children’, and grown-ups might be overcome with nostalgia during the ride. In Keighley (20 minutes), Cliffe Castle was built as the home of a wealthy Victorian textile manufacturer. It is now a museum full of furniture, art and decorative objects, plus displays of fossils, taxidermy and vintage toys. The gardens include several water features, an aviary and a playground. On the outskirts of the market town of Hebden Bridge (20 minutes) is Hardcastle Crags, a National Trust nature site with dog-friendly woodland walks. Assorted ponds, streams and waterfalls are home to frogs and other aquatic beasties, while woodpeckers and curlews are just two of the resident bird species.
