  • Country pub on the edge of the Peak District National Park
  • Five miles from Sheffield city centre; 20 minutes' drive from Bakewell
  • Seasonal menu, top-notch drinks, log fires and quiz nights
Merry? You may well be positively gleeful during a stay at The Three Merry Lads, a fab country pub in a mighty handy location a mere 15 minutes’ drive from central Sheffield. All the elements of true country pub style are in evidence here: a menu of seasonal and classic dishes created with local produce, plenty of choice on the drinks front (including top-notch gins, wines and coffees as well as a range of beers) and a couple of log fires to cosy up by on chillier days. And you’d best swot up on your trivia if you’re swinging by on a Thursday, as there’s a chance to flex that brain at the weekly quiz night. Dogs are welcome, of course, as are kids – there’s a collection of board games to keep them amused indoors and a playground outside, handily close to the outdoor seating area for easy keeping-an-eye. You’ll not have to trot far from the bar to get set for your slumbers, as pitches are in the main car park just outside the pub. Water and electrical connections are provided, and you can connect to the pub’s wifi service. And on top of all this… seen those views? (If not, take a quick squizz at the pics now.) Yes indeed, you’re right on the edge of the Peak District National Park here; so close you can even work up an appetite on walking trails directly from the pub’s gates.

Local attractions

Come all set for Peak District action? Stride straight out of the site and you can be on paths that’ll take you off to nearby nature reserves and reservoirs. Beyond that are miles and miles of walking trails around the park and plenty of other options for alfresco activity: steer to Stanage Edge (20 minutes’ drive) for rock climbing scrambles, or to Ringinglow (10 minutes) for archery and horse riding. Bimbling around various villages is a splendid way to spend a day or two: nearby faves include Hathersage (20 minutes), Hope (25 minutes) and a pudding pilgrimage to Bakewell (half an hour). Castleton (half an hour) is a great place to poke around, too – climb to Peveril Castle for scenic views and then delve deep down for an underground boat ride at Speedwell Cavern or to see the pretty rocks of the Blue John Cavern. Chatsworth Estate (40 minutes away) is always a good bet for a day out – it’s not just a stately home but also has fab gardens, a farmyard and an adventure playground. And of course there’s also the option of urban wanderings in the fine city that is Sheffield (15 minutes away).

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Convenient, easy access to Sheffield. Just a simple, no frills stop over in a pub car park. Accommodated our 7.5m motorhome easily. Great pub as well. A couple of nice walks right from the pub, if that's your thing. Ehu available if you want it (we didn't). Stayed there twice now, will certainly stay again.

Disliked: Access to toilets end when the pub shuts, and the pub sometimes shuts early if not busy. But I'm nit picking here tbh.

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Nice pub and staff and check-in were friendly and easy.

Disliked: Where we parked was a little messy with a deep puddle and very muddy, there was a lot of litter in the hedges where we parked which could have been cleared!

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: I was on a football tour of south Yorkshire in my van and trying to find open camp site in March is quite difficult. Found this place on Pitchup - only 3 or 4 vans were parked overnight so it not cramped. The food in the pub was lovely. I plumped for the gammon and it was huge and tasty. The views are apparently great, but I arrived when it was dark and in the morning we had rain and fog, so I didn't get to see anything! The staff in the pub were really friendly and helpful and you're allowed to use the toilets up until the closes for the night. It was very quiet overnight

Disliked: Can't think of anything

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Car park was flat with option of electric hook up. Close to where we needed to get to ie Crookes. Would use again but only because of location. Very quiet night's sleep.

Disliked: Lots of litter. Thought it was a bit pricey. The outside area did look a bit neglected and the pub inside was cold. Pub shut early, so no access to toilets.
