  • Secluded, private site on a working farm in rural Northumberland
  • Newcastle and the North Pennines within a half-hour drive
  • Stunning views across the Tyne Valley; woodland walks nearby
Wild camping in Northumberland – yes, that’s the main draw of Wild Camping Northumberland. But that’s not all that’s on offer at this simple and secluded site on a working farm two miles from Stocksfield… For starters, a quick look at the map will tell you this is a most handy spot for all sorts of days out, from city escapades in Newcastle to days on the Northumberland coast to walks by Hadrian’s Wall or in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There’s great walking and cycling around the area (the National Hill Climb was held here in 2017)… and to top all of that lot off, you can walk to an award-winning pub in just five minutes (how very convenient). And then a quick look at the pics will tell you that the site itself is rather lovely too, with stunning views across the Tyne Valley (and often a spectacular sunset too), woodland walks nearby and plenty of peace and quiet. It’s particularly popular with families who appreciate having lots of space for the kids to run around in; well-behaved dogs are welcome too. The simple pitches here are set up in a private area on the outskirts of a working farm in the village of Hedley on the Hill. As the name suggests, this is proper wild camping: a water tap and toilets are available but please note there are currently no shower facilities on site. Guests are welcome to bring along a barbecue or firepit to keep them warm of an evening; provisions can be picked up 10 minutes’ drive away in Prudhoe.

What customers say

This site offers spacious fields with stunning views, perfect for a "back to basics" wild camping experience. Visitors consistently praise the friendly and helpful owners, particularly Richard, who ensures guests feel welcome and have what they need. Clean portaloos and available fresh water are appreciated. Its proximity to a great local pub is also a significant draw. While some noted occasional smokiness from fire pits or wished for more water taps, the overwhelming sentiment is positive, with many planning to return.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Loads of space to choose from to pitch. Everyone had their own space and not crowded. The owners, were amazing, nothing was too much. They helped us pitch our tent as it was extremely windy! 10/10 experience.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had a one night stay a the beautifully located Wild Camping Northumberland. Several large fields next to a working farm, with far fetching views across the valley. The host/ owner greeted us with a smile and enthusiasm and checked in on us again in the evening. Although the fields were busy, it didn't feel crowded and we had plenty of room and the views were just amazing and the stars once the clouds past were beautiful. Very relaxed on check out times, no rush meant a relaxed breakfast, time for the tent to dry off and some extra time enjoying those views 😍

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Just what we needed, big field with tap, toilet and fire pits! The pub up the road is really close and a great local doing solid Pizzas on Friday and Saturday night.

The Campsite owner, Richard, was really friendly and helped us out with anything we needed.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Friendly welcome, thank you. Site as described with plenty of space for visitors to spread out and not feel too close to neighbouring campers. Toilets really clean and numerous enough for a busy weekend. Fresh water available. Beautiful views and levelish pitches with careful parking.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Owner was really friendly and helpful. He pointed us to a flat area of the field and advised re local walks. He worked tirelessly during our stay ensuring the portaloos were kept clean and well stocked with paper. The two fields are huge so everyone was well spaced out.The views are amazing and far reaching. It was lovely to see kids being kids, running around in bear feet on wet grass, playing together. Short walk to a great pub, the Festhers Inn.

Disliked People burning all sorts on fire pits which made it quite smoky at times

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Very clear communication with the host. Lovely friendly welcome when we arrived. Large field so plenty of space between groups of people. Could hire fire pits and buy wood. Plenty of portaloos dotted around the field. Quite a sloping field but enough flattish spots and the views over the valley were well worth it. Quiet and peaceful spot 👍🏼 excellent phone signal 5G Doggy friendly 🐾

Local attractions

If you’d like to mix in some rather less wild outings with all the hikes and other outdoor activities, head to National Trust properties at Cherryburn (10 minutes’ drive) and the gorgeous Georgian estate at Gibside Hall (20 minutes). Beamish, the Living Museum of the North (half an hour) is another great spot for family outings, with the chance to immerse yourselves in the sights and sounds of an early 20th-century pit village, farm and other settings. Looking back a bit further into history, explore the area’s Roman past by starting in Corbridge (20 minutes) to see some of the artefacts found during excavations and then take a walk along the Hadrian’s Wall trail. One of the more intact sections of wall is at Vindolanda (40 minutes), which has award-winning museums as well as a functioning archaeological site to see. Other outings nearby might take you for days in Hexham (25 minutes) or Newcastle upon Tyne (half an hour), or over to the coast for a blast of sea air at Whitley Bay beach (45 minutes).
