Wild Camping Northumberland: Spectacular views

General

  • Secluded, private site on a working farm in rural Northumberland
  • Newcastle and the North Pennines within a half-hour drive
  • Stunning views across the Tyne Valley; woodland walks nearby

Wild camping in Northumberland – yes, that’s the main draw of Wild Camping Northumberland. But that’s not all that’s on offer at this simple and secluded site on a working farm two miles from Stocksfield…

For starters, a quick look at the map will tell you this is a most handy spot for all sorts of days out, from city escapades in Newcastle to days on the Northumberland coast to walks by Hadrian’s Wall or in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There’s great walking and cycling around the area (the National Hill Climb was held here in 2017)… and to top all of that lot off, you can walk to an award-winning pub in just five minutes (how very convenient).

And then a quick look at the pics will tell you that the site itself is rather lovely too, with stunning views across the Tyne Valley (and often a spectacular sunset too), woodland walks nearby and plenty of peace and quiet. It’s particularly popular with families who appreciate having lots of space for the kids to run around in; well-behaved dogs are welcome too.

The simple pitches here are set up in a private area on the outskirts of a working farm in the village of Hedley on the Hill. As the name suggests, this is proper wild camping: a water tap and toilets are available but please note there are currently no shower facilities on site. Guests are welcome to bring along a barbecue or firepit to keep them warm of an evening; provisions can be picked up 10 minutes’ drive away in Prudhoe.

Please note

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Peace and tranquility. Huge pitches. Good value for a family, 2 cars and 2 dogs. Basic facilities (stand pipe and portaloo). Great host.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but be aware some pitches will be on a slope due to natural landscape

Richard was extremely welcoming on our arrival and was happy to show us good spots to pitch. He also rented us a fire pit (£5 per night) and a bag of firewood (£5 per bag) which added to the camping experience. The campsite is set over two large fields. It is on a hill, but there are enough flatter areas that you can pitch without worrying you will all end up in a heap at one end of the tent. When we went there were two portaloos on site - one at the top of the field and one at the bottom. With there being about 15 family groups there when we stayed this just about met everyone's needs without needing to queue for the loo. Perhaps one or two more loos would benefit future campers. There is a drinking wayer tap at the top of the field too.
