General

  • Eco site in Northumberland National Park
  • BYO woodland bar area with firepits
  • Wildlife pond, bird hide and three-acre area for walking dogs

If you haven't been to Northumberland National Park or Kielder Forest before, you should go forthwith. For here you'll find spectacular stargazing, Kielder Water, Roman forts, the Cheviots Hills and many other goodies – and then the Scottish Borders are just to your north.

And if you're looking for an eco-friendly place to stay right in the heart of all this fabulousness and close to its main attractions, go forthwith to Tarset Tor. For here you'll find a five-acre park set in North Tyne's Tarset Valley, deep inside Northumberland National Park, and close to Kielder Water, Kielder Forest, Hadrian's Wall and the centre of Bellingham. And it's on the Reivers Cycle route too.

The team at Tarset Tor has gone to great lengths to make the site as sustainable and green as possible: the hot shower uses a pellet boiler system and there's an eco loo; the touring bays are grass laid over pea gravel and geo-textile so they're a solid base for your vehicle whatever the weather, and the site has its own wildlife pond and bird hide that doubles as a sauna (available to hire at a small charge).

Also most popular with guests is the BYO woodland bar area that comes complete with firepits (go here forthwith too) and the logs, charcoal and eggs for sale on site. Dogs are welcome, and if they could speak, we reckon they'd find the three-acre fenced dog walking area a barkingly good Tarset Tor feature too.

Loved the area and the bothy!
Welcomed by the owner who told us to do and go where we liked and make sure we enjoyed ourselves.
Settled in to the bothy before owner came to show how the pellet burner worked.
The bothy must rate as five star plus accommodation for backpackers! Son (who has been backpacking in Australia) has never experienced such a good shower on his travels. Clean, well-equipped accommodation, extremely comfortable and warm. All you should need in the kitchen including flasks to make up when taking a walk to explore the glorious Northumbrian landscape.

    Disliked:

Nearest pub (about 10 minutes walk away in Greenhaugh) looked lovely but only opened at 5pm. However, we had taken enough food, drink and entertainment to not need a pub visit.

Warm welcome, clean, bothies are fantastic, well built and comfortable. Would definitely recommend to friends and will be booking up again at some point.

    Disliked:

Theres nothing really to dislike, beautiful place at a reasonable price. I would note that the stairs upto the bedroom level are quite steep for young children or people with a lack of mobility but this is more of an observation and something we managed quite easily with our children.(ages 4 and 8)

From the manager...

Just to confirm to anyone who reads this review, We are not a campsite par se! We have 3 bay's and very basic facilities and open only under the (28 day Law) The business is Bunkhouse and Bothies which have 66 5* reviews from TripAdvisor. Our camping facilities are basic. We have 1 eco-toilet, 1 shower, a double sink and 1 water stand pipe. There is however a sauna, fire pits, a wildlife pond and 'great views' set in 5 acres. Following this review and other comments that we have received by visitors we are probably not ideal for the average caravaner and being a new business we constantly review what works and what does not! There is a steep-ish hill to the pitches and therefore next summer we will only be able to accommodate Campervans and the odd tent. All this said I do apologise if your visit was disrupted by lively young persons (hoo-hars) having fun whilst being on holiday. That I am afraid, is the nature of the beast when you are a holiday provider, some people like to enjoy themselves while others want a quiet retreat. We have now let pitches for 3 seasons and have come to the conclusion that in general we are not really a 'stereotypical' caravaners place. Sorry!

Rob and family making us feel so welcome. The kids loved the football matches!
The site, the kids loved playing hide and seek in the open countryside.
The peace, quiet and dark sky's.
Being able to have camp fires.
The kids informed me this was the best holiday they have had in the caravan! They loved the compost loo, camp fires and the freedom of the site!

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but just be aware it is just a compost loo and would be quite a trek at night from pitch if camping. I am glad we had the caravan loo!!

The shower is lovely, however, if possible would be great for it to be slightly bigger so dry places for clothes etc.

The caravan pitches are tight. We had a six berth caravan and realistically without a hgv1 driver holiday person to direct we would have struggled to get it on the pitch. A smaller caravan and a motor mover would be better to save on stress! However I am aware in the long term Rob is making new pitches so this will not remain an issue.

Local attractions

There are so many tiptop places around Tarset Tor, whether you're into sedate pursuits like visiting historical sites or white-knuckling ones on fast-paced outdoor activities.

Tarset is close to the Kielder mountain bike trails, the 7stanes network and a nicely diverse range of other outdoor activities like learning bushcraft, foraging or how to use crossbows; archery, quad biking, horse riding, fencing, canoeing, skating or clay pigeon shooting… A good selection of golf courses are in the area as well, as is some smashing fishing on the River Tyne.

For walkies, hit the nearby Pennine Way north to Bellingham or south to Stonehaugh, or wander around the old Roman market towns of Hexham and Corbridge, both within easy reach and with boutique shops, galleries and restaurants. (More good local eats can be had in neighbouring Greenhaugh, Charlton and Bellingham villages.)

And if you're in Northumberland you have to take a run around the coast, especially as the road to the sea from Tarset Tor meanders through old forests and moorland on its way to Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island.

There's much too much to recommend on the Northumberland coastline, but faves of the Tarset Tor team include the beaches of Alnmouth and Craster; stop off at Alnwick Castle on your way.
