  • Spacious and scenic Northumberland site two miles south of Hexham
  • Hadrian's Wall and Northumberland National Park within easy reach
  • Dog-friendly pitches with views across Hexham Racecourse
If you’re heading to Hexham and hoping to find a suitable spot nearby for an outdoor stay, take a look at Hexham Racecourse Caravan Site. This spacious park is two miles south of Hexham and well placed for visits to the market town and time spent exploring the scenic Northumberland surroundings. You don’t have to be a horse lover to stay here – but you’ll probably particularly appreciate it. As the name suggests, this site is part of the town’s racecourse (known as ‘Britain’s most scenic racecourse’), with pitches right next to the course for a real sense of atmosphere on race days. Things get pretty lively during those race days, but at other times this is a very peaceful place to stay, with lovely views over the countryside and a south-facing aspect to give you a full day of sunlight. The main amenities block has a laundry room as well as ladies’ and gents’ toilets and showers along with accessible facilities. You’re welcome to bring one or two dogs along provided they’re kept on a lead at all times on site. Getting out and about, it’s a five-minute drive to Hexham for shops, pubs and restaurants, or about half an hour to Newcastle. Hadrian’s Wall is very close by too, as are the fabulous scenery of the Northumberland National Park and North Pennines National Landscape.

What customers say

This is a peaceful site with stunning views, praised for its friendly staff and immaculately clean facilities. Pitches are generally spacious, though some reviewers mention uneven ground and the site's exposed location can be windy. Some feedback notes occasional issues with shower drainage and a lack of on-site amenities for purchase, but overall guests are happy with the value and beautiful surroundings.

Liked It was a good price and bang next to the racecourse.Handy for Hexham itself but it's a good walk to get there.

Disliked It is very exposed and blowing a gale when we were there. No local shop.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely scenic spot, good facilities, plenty of space. Friendly and helpful check in with good advice about getting into town and back. It is a fair walk down the hill to town (2 miles) but we got a taxi back from the cab rank in the high street which was easy to get and only a few pounds. Walking back up the hill would be a struggle unless you are exceptionally fit. I would definitely stay again.

Disliked Relocate the town half way up the hill.
I'm joking obviously.

I wouldn't change anything about the site.

From the manager: Thank you for posting a review and delighted you would recommend to friends and return.
Next time you return the journey back up from the town may seem shorter :-)

Marvelous views, nice facilities but can feel windy.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Wonderful setting with interesting long-distance panoramic views. Campervan pitches are right next to the racetrack so you see all the interesting fairway maintainable going on.
Facilities clean and modern. Nice indoor washing up sink and laundry with plenty of hot water.
Short drive into Hexham, lots to see.

Disliked There was a bit of temperature fluctuation with the showers, seemingly relating to the push button system, but otherwise excellent facilities.

From the manager: Thank you for the review and information about showers.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Tremendous views from this site. A friendly welcome. A relaxed, casual set up with no long list of rules. It was quiet. Wonderful dark skies - do bring a torch. Wifi worked fine. Bargain price and open to early arrivals and late departures. Recommend you approach via Eastgate in Hexham.

Disliked I suspect the facilities would struggle if the site was busy but they coped for our stays.

Local attractions

Hexham (five minutes' drive) is a lovely place for a wander, with lots of independent shops and cafés as well as its Grade I-listed abbey and the Hexham Old Gaol museum. Just a little further east is Corbridge (15 minutes), best known for the Corbridge Roman Town English Heritage site. That’s just one of the sections of Hadrian’s Wall you can visit nearby – other top spots include Vindolanda and Housesteads Roman Fort (both 25 minutes). Heading to the east, you’ll reach Newcastle in about half an hour to see the famed Tyne Bridge and visit the city’s numerous museums and arts venues. There's also the option of some time on the beach at Whitley Bay (45 minutes’ drive). For a total change from urban life, set off to explore the North Pennines National Landscape or Northumberland National Park – for the latter you may like to start at The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre (25 minutes) for an introduction to the area. There are lots of excellent places to visit, but a highlight must be Kielder Water (an hour), for its watersports and dark sky observatory.
