  • Well-designed kitchens, living spaces and ensuites; access to a sauna
They must be doing something very right at Fell Farm Hideaway, 20 minutes’ drive from Hexham in Northumberland, as guests just keep on coming back year after year. Perhaps it’s because of the glamping accommodation? After all, who can resist well-designed and luxuriously kitted out log cabins set on a working farm within walking distance of Hallington Reservoir? Sleeping up to four guests, each cabin is placed amid greenery for privacy, and offers uninterrupted views over farmland. Inside they have well-equipped bespoke kitchens, a living space with a cosy sofa bed, TV and a dining table. Linens are provided in the double bedroom, and there are showers, basins and heated towel rails in the ensuite bathrooms; sauna access is available by arrangement too. Moving outside, each unit has its own private space with decking, picnic tables and chairs. Designed specifically as rural retreats for a low-impact stay, they have a limited mobile signal and many guests choose to switch off and enjoy a simple ‘no phone’ break from digital life. The cabins are handy for Northumberland walking holidays and have easy access to attractions like Hadrian’s Wall (10 minutes by car) and North Sea beaches including Druridge Bay (50 minutes).

Local attractions

Make Hallington Reservoir (15 minutes’ walk) your first stop for easy looped strolls around its shoreline – you can connect up to St Oswald’s Way for longer hikes here too – and birdwatching for mallards and wagtails. You can also strike out across open countryside on two legs or two wheels, follow sections of Hadrian’s Wall (10 minutes’ drive) and take long strolls along the sands at stunning Druridge Bay (50 minutes). The trendy market towns of Corbridge (15 minutes) and Hexham (20 minutes) are known for their interesting indie shops and café life. If you fancy a day out in the big city, Newcastle-upon-Tyne department stores, art galleries and cool Quayside restaurants are 35 minutes’ away by car, while history-lovers can discover the UNESCO-listed Norman cathedral and walk along the meandering River Wear in Durham (50 minutes). The area around Hexham has some of the darkest night skies in England; wait for a cloudless night at Fell Farm Hideaway and hopefully you’ll see the Milky Way dancing in the skies above your head. You can also try your luck using the telescopes at Battlesteads Dark Sky Observatory (20 minutes) or Twice Brewed Observatory and Planetarium (25 minutes).
