  • Friendly, quiet Northumberland site 15 minutes’ walk to Hadrian’s Wall
  • C2C and Pennine Way five minutes’ drive; Roman museums 10 minutes
  • Abundant wildlife; dogs welcome; essentials shop and morning café
You’re guaranteed the warmest of welcomes at Hadrian’s Wall Campsite, a peaceful spot edging the spectacular Northumberland National Park in the Tyne Valley. And what else are you guaranteed? An equally friendly greeting for any accompanying dogs, great views from everywhere on site, quiet downtime for you and your family and – on clear nights – a multitude of stars twinkling in the heavens of this dark skies reserve. Here you can also wake up to birdsong, walk to Hadrian’s Wall in 15 minutes, complete sections of the Coast to Coast Cycle Route (C2C) or the Pennine Way, and get back to your pitch in time to catch colourful skies as the sun sets behind the hills. If you’d rather simply chill amid nature during the day, the site’s abundant wildlife makes it a great place for spotting hedgehogs, stoats and wild rabbits. Essentials are sold in the small site shop, along with tasty locally made biscuits, chutneys, jams and ice cream. A café opens in the morning and does a roaring trade in breakfast rolls made with sausages, eggs and bacon from the butcher in Haltwhistle, 10 minutes’ drive away – wash them down with Northumberland-roasted barista coffee and milk from a neighbouring farm. Spotless showers, a washing-up area, a fridge and freezer, and a laundry with washer and dryer complete the roster of on-site facilities.

Electric optional grass touring caravan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This was my second visit to Hadrians Wall Campsite and it was even better than the first.
Everyone was very friendly, the owners were easily contacted if not already on site, the small shop/ reception/cafe was spotless and the breakfast sandwich was amazing and just what I needed.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch (secluded)

Liked Everything! Spotless facilities, on site shop/cafe, friendly and helpful hosts and staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Lovely presentation of the site such as beautiful landscaping, hanging baskets and birdlife in the most superb location.

Disliked Absolutely nothing to dislike about the site. However campers with large dogs may struggle with the ladder stiles on nearby public footpaths, some of which are poorly maintained by local landowners sadly.

Meadow shepherd's hut

Liked This is our 3rd visit to this site, normally we are in a campervan with awning (and have previously left excellent reviews as the pitches/facilities for campers are great). This visit we stayed in one of the shepard huts and I am even more in love with this site than before! The huts are fabulous, they have thought of everything. I cannot think of anything you would need that wasn't in there. 2 burner hob, microwave, small fridge, crockery/pots and pans, marshmallow toasting forks for the fire pit. Wood for the fireplace and inside log burner, blankets for the evening. It has a litter heater too. A selection of books including the nightsky and local area. The bed and bedding was incredibly comfortable and the fold out futon for the kids (13 and 9 - so it's a decent size) was also very comfy and got no complaints. Large amount of storage under the bed so no falling over bags. The shower pressure wasn't bad and the temperature was very good. You are right up the top of the site in these huts so it's lovely and quiet, lots of green space for the kids to run around and a nice sized deck and outside furniture for eating in the evening. We had really good weather so could sit out each night, I do imagine if it was raining you'd feel a little cramped inside but there again you feel that in a tent too! The site was impeccably clean and tidy as ever, the shop and the delicious bacon rolls were also as good as ever. I quite literally cannot fault this site and it is the only campsite I have ever been back to more than once. Its so well placed for exploring the local history on foot or by car. Haltwhistle has a sainsbury and a good chippy. We will be back again for certain!

Disliked Absolutely nothing, it's is the most perfect campsite I have ever stayed at.

Meadow shepherd's hut

Liked Lovely site within walking distance of Hadrian's Wall. I was given lots of helpful advice about local amenities on arrival, including the AD122 local bus service. This is great if you want to walk a linear route along the wall. The shepherd's hut was very comfortable and had all the facilities that I needed (and more!). The site is in a beautiful location.

Local attractions

Many of Northumberland’s attractions are within easy walking or cycling distance; you can access both the C2C and the Pennine Way under five minutes away by car at Once Brewed, while the Northumberland 250 driving route, taking in the national park and the coastline, is about the same distance away. You are in pole position to explore Hadrian’s Wall too – it’s barely 15 minutes’ walk away, bringing with it stunning views over Northumberland’s wild fells and valleys. A trifecta of fascinating museums includes Vindolanda Roman Museum, where you can explore the remains of a Roman village; Housesteads Roman Fort – Vercovicium has sprawling relics from a hilltop fort; and the Roman Army Museum (all within 10 minutes’ drive) offers up immersive displays on ancient Roman life at Hadrian’s Wall. If the kids are rebelling against all that history, try them on the “Shaun the Sheep” art trail and the engaging wildlife exhibits at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre (five minutes).
