You’re guaranteed the warmest of welcomes at Hadrian’s Wall Campsite, a peaceful spot edging the spectacular Northumberland National Park in the Tyne Valley. And what else are you guaranteed? An equally friendly greeting for any accompanying dogs, great views from everywhere on site, quiet downtime for you and your family and – on clear nights – a multitude of stars twinkling in the heavens of this dark skies reserve. Here you can also wake up to birdsong, walk to Hadrian’s Wall in 15 minutes, complete sections of the Coast to Coast Cycle Route (C2C) or the Pennine Way, and get back to your pitch in time to catch colourful skies as the sun sets behind the hills. If you’d rather simply chill amid nature during the day, the site’s abundant wildlife makes it a great place for spotting hedgehogs, stoats and wild rabbits. Essentials are sold in the small site shop, along with tasty locally made biscuits, chutneys, jams and ice cream. A café opens in the morning and does a roaring trade in breakfast rolls made with sausages, eggs and bacon from the butcher in Haltwhistle, 10 minutes’ drive away – wash them down with Northumberland-roasted barista coffee and milk from a neighbouring farm. Spotless showers, a washing-up area, a fridge and freezer, and a laundry with washer and dryer complete the roster of on-site facilities.

Liked The staff/owners couldn’t do more to help. Really friendly and accommodating. The site is really well laid out, even though there were plenty of people on site it never felt busy. The cleanliness of the facilities was excellent! Not just the facilities, the site as a whole in-fact.

Small touches like the information sheet you receive upon arrival were great. Onsite WiFi was excellent where we were parked up.

I visited with my 12yo daughter and the music playing in the toilet and shower block was great for her. In her words it was “calming when you’re in there on your own at night”.

The cake box was a great idea, and they were delish!

Bacon sarnies and a coffee in the morning is an absolute winner! The small shop on site is well stocked for the essentials.

It’s a bit of a walk to anything in the area. We wandered to a local pub, ~20-30 min walk over moorland. and due to fog and losing light we had to walk back via the military road. Fortunately the road was really quiet but I wouldn’t recommend it!

The local area is steeped in history and there’s wildlife galore, couldn’t recommend a visit more.

Disliked About the site, absolutely nothing. Faultless.
Only gripe was the person next to us complaining our sliding door was being opened and closed too much 🙄.

Liked Lovely clean site with easy to access and well maintained amenities, clear instructions, the staff were easy to contact and they were all really lovely people.

We turned up much later than anticipated and in a storm and the lady who welcomed us was kind, helpful, and talked me through what was around.

Meadow shepherd's hut

Liked Our shepherd's hut was perfect! Caroline gave us a friendly welcome. It had everything we needed and was so clean. It was laid out very well and had plenty of storage under the bed for hiding all our luggage. We we're very comfortable as a family with two young children sleeping on the pull out sofa bed. We hope to come back... We missed some of the places we wanted to visit because of the weather but we definitely made the most of it. Vindolanda was a good half day out and the milecastle inn an excellent cosy stop for a meal.

Disliked The weather (our visit was during storm boelo!!)
We were still warm and cosy despite it.

Close to bus route and walking distance to Hadrians wall.

Liked Small, quiet campsite with immaculately clean bathrooms and a good laundry.
The owners are friendly and helpful.
The position of the site is great in that it's close to Hadrian's Wall and the Roman forts and in a superb dark sky area.
There is the option to purchase breakfast baps and homemade cakes.

Disliked We just fitted in a 7.5m motorhome but anything longer wouldn't have room.

We are very lucky to have such a beautiful landscape and interesting Roman history around us. Our skies in the Winter particularly are spectacular.

Our pitches across the site vary in size and the pitch you were allocated is suitable for a van up to 7.5m. However if anyone has a van longer than that (up to 8m) we do have suitable pitches elsewhere on the site which provide ample room.

Liked Everything! The team are so friendly and helpful and accessibility was great as requested. We were thrilled to see the beautiful ducks and the fluffy rabbits. Our pitch was perfect with lovely views of the neighbouring horses and countryside. All facilities were spotless and there was everything we needed.
