  • Cosy pods at a family-run park on the banks of the Wansbeck river
  • Newcastle upon Tyne, Whitley Bay and Alnwick within half-hour drive
  • Within a nature reserve; 15 minutes' walk from Choppington village
You’ll get a little bit of everything when you stay at Wansbeck Riverside Caravan Park – a good dose of fresh air mixed with a whole lot of luxury fittings, and a peaceful nature reserve location that’s also within easy walking distance of several shops and places to eat. This is an enviable location indeed for a Northumbria break – the family-run holiday park is inside Wansbeck Riverside Park, a country park that gained local nature reserve status in 2007 and is also home to birds, red squirrels, roe deer and rabbits. And, as the name of both parks suggests, it’s also right on the banks of the Wansbeck river, with access to a riverside path that will eventually take walkers or cyclists all the way to the coast, about three miles away at Ashington. Other outings in the area might take you north to Alnwick Castle and Alnmouth beach, west to hikes in Northumberland National Park or south for urban adventures in Newcastle upon Tyne. Feeding up for whichever one of those you select should be straightforward, as there’s a café on site serving up homemade baked goodies, drinks and lunches (don’t miss the fabulous Yorkshire pudding wraps…), or it’s a short walk of 15-20 minutes across the river to the village of Choppington for pubs, restaurants and takeaways. Alternatively, pick up supplies in the shops for use in your well-equipped kitchenette back on site. That kitchenette is just one of the handy amenities provided inside the pods here – each one also contains an ensuite shower room (with towels), a comfy double bed (with bed linen), a dining table, a TV and a sofa.

The Burrow microlodge

Liked: A lovely break away - just me and Dave the dog! Cosy and clean and the riverside walk is just five minutes away. On the Saturday we drove to Cambois Beach - next time we'll walk the five miles down the riverbank... As the sun went down I read and had a glass of wine and Dave watched the rabbits! A handy co-op 10 minutes drive away and I treated myself to a lovely veggie breakfast at the cafe on the Sunday morning. Thanks very much - we'll be back!

The Burrow microlodge

Liked: The micro-lodge was great, very comfortable for the size. It was very nicely decorated and clean. A new blanket was even provided for our dog. The location of the lodge gave us enough privacy and lovely views down to the river. All the staff that we met were friendly and helpful. Easy access to the riverside path was good for walking our dog. The on-site cafe was really nice and served a good variety of food and fantastic cakes.

Disliked: Not a dislike, but it would have been handy to have a toaster and kitchen knife provided as well. Some more trees on the site would be nice.

Local attractions

After you’ve taken a walk by the river, you may like to set off for longer hikes in the Northumberland National Park (40 minutes’ drive), which has over 600 miles of trail to keep you busy, plus cycle routes, climbing and horse riding. For a more leisurely bit of outdoor activity there are two golf courses within a 15-minute drive, including the splendid sea-view Newbiggin Golf Club. Also well worth a wander are the grounds of Alnwick Castle (half an hour), Warkworth Castle (25 minutes) and the National Trust’s Cragside estate (35 minutes). Otherwise, head to Whitley Bay (half an hour) for a stroll on the beach and out to the lighthouse or to try out some watersports. For a real change of scenery, take a day in Newcastle upon Tyne (half an hour) to see the Tyne Bridge, visit the Biscuit Factory for contemporary art displays and take a subterranean tour of the Victoria Tunnels.
