  • Peaceful 35-acre rural site with 10 acres of vineyards
  • In the village of Nun Monkton, between Harrogate and York
  • Remote location for wildlife and stargazing; several local farm shops
What a lush setting… Yorkshire Heart Vineyard, as you might surmise from the name, is among wine vines in the Yorkshire countryside, in green and pleasant land. Set in the village of Nun Monkton, it spreads over 35 handsome acres, 10 of which are made up of rich and leafy vineyards. The site's location between Harrogate and York means it's remotely placed with many options for countryside walks, but also within easy driving distance of top North Yorkshire attractions including national parks, museums, historic houses and steam railways. Shops, restaurants and pubs are easily accessed too: the Yorkshire Heart owners recommend the Alice Hawthorn Inn for its cask ales and fresh food, while the Anchor Inn at Whixley is known for its carvery. Made up of spectacular vineyard and meadow surroundings, the site has loads of space for kids to run around safely and is in a remote location stellar for wildlife and stargazing. Barbecues are allowed: for easily sorted supplies, meander along to the several local farm shops including one at the end of the lane and another in Whixley. The nearest general shop is a mile and a half away at the end of Nun Monkton Lane. Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is a basic site, with toilets and running water (about 200 metres from the camping field): please note there are no showers. Guests must take all rubbish home with them. Dogs are welcome if kept on leads at all times.

Local attractions

Stick around the countryside for walks and bike rides from here, or get along to market towns like Knaresborough and Harrogate, shopping and heritage cities like York and Leeds or day trips to famed North Yorkshire seaside towns such as Whitby and Scarborough. Yorkshire Heart Vineyard's local village of Nun Monkton, set where the River Ouse joins the Nidd, is a handy base for miles' worth of gentle countryside walks or easy cycling: look out on the village green for the tallest maypole in England too. The Vale of York, North York Moors National Park and Brontë country around Haworth are all top options for nearby hikes. Heaps of historical highlights are all around, such as the fab Minster at York, Castle Howard and its vast gardens, Newby Hall and the National Trust's Nunnington and Beningbrough Halls. For museums and history, the Jorvik Viking Centre in York, the World War II sights and smells at Eden Camp in Malden and the National Railway Museum, also in York, are all good options for family days out. To steam around the Yorkshire countryside (much recommended), take a trip on the award-winning North Yorkshire Moors Railway on its 18-mile puff from Pickering to Whibty, or (and) the Derwent Valley Light Railway, on a gentle three miles around Murton Park.
