Spacious grassy pitches

General

  • Quiet site with fishing lake on the outskirts of York
  • North Yorkshire Moors National Park and coast within an hour's drive
  • A 15-minute drive to York's museums, minster and shops

Wag your tails for this fab spot with a fishing lake: if you’re a fan of the art of waiting patiently for a bite by the waters, Wagtail Park in North Yorkshire will be a top berth for you. Its 10 acres of landscaped parklands include an angling lake stuffed with carp and perch, bream, roach and tench, and there are two tackle shops within a 10-minute drive. The other variety of wagging tail is welcome too, with dog-walking areas set aside around the site.

For a break from fishing, the city of York is 15 minutes' drive away for tours of the medieval town, visits to the Jorvik Viking Centre and National Railway Museum and the Minster, as well as practical things like shops, pubs and innumerable places to eat. Attractions on the peripheries of York are easy to reach as well, such as the Yorkshire Air Museum (10 minutes) and 18th-century Beningborough Hall (20 minutes).

The coast is around an hour’s drive away, and in between it and the site lie the 1500-odd square kilometres of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Get a taste as well as a trip back in time on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway from Pickering (half an hour) to Whitby.

Wagtail Park is fully accessible for disabled guests, with spacious wetroom showers; underfloor heating in the washrooms is a bonus appreciated by many, especially through the chillier months.

Please note

Wonderful site with friendly owner and it has easy access from A64.05/08/2020

The site is spotless and well cared for by the owner.
Friendly welcome, even talked me through reversing the caravan onto our pitch. We were given lots of information about the site and surrounding areas.
There was some road noise but nothing to complain about, didn’t notice it on a night.
The site is located in an ideal location, close to park and rides into York centre.
Also easy to assess from the A64 which was great for me as still new to towing.
We felt very safe as the owner has ensured the site complies with Covid rules, toilets and showers are closed, this didn’t effect us as we always use ours own facilities.
Going to miss watching the sun set over the fishing lake.
We will be returning again soon!

Quiet well kept site. Only a handful of pitches occupied as we come out of lockdown
    Owner very helpful
    Good fishing for my partner
    Level pitches
Easy to get yo off A64

    Disliked:

There was some background noise from traffic presumably going in and out of York. This was probably barely noticeable to others but we noticed it as we live in a fairly remote and very quiet village. Don't let this put you off.
There is no public transport nearby so difficult explore . caravan with a car that you can unhitch is good to visit the surrounding area. Another motorhome owner had a Smart car attached so could travel about in this. I believe a taxi into York is around £10.
We don't like to move our motorhome once we've set up but that is our personal choice

Peter, the owner was a lovely guy who greeted us at the gate and gave us a choice of pitches. He explained where everything was and gave recommendations for what to do and where to eat, which was good to know. He even had foam mats to borrow for around your caravan steps to keep the mud to a minimum (if there was any).
The shower block was lovely and clean and spacious showers.
The site itself is ideally located 4 minutes drive from MONKS CROSS shopping park.
The layout of the grassed field was spacious between pitches and left the centre of the field as an open space, perfectly safe for children to play.
The fishing lake is an added bonus and well maintained for those that want to use it.

There is nothing I can think of to criticise this site, as both myself and my husband thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will now prefer it to our usual favoured site!

Fabulous little site, very clean and warm toilet/shower block. Lots of information on things to do, places to visit, local pub menus and takeaway menus who deliver to the site! Very friendly owner who took the time to show me around. The fishing lake is beautiful with ducks and water hens. The motor home pitch was very spacious, with electric and water points close by. Taxis only £10 fixed fee into the centre of York!

Local attractions

If you’re fired up for walking more through this fab area of moors and heaths, take another railway trail: the tracks and engines have gone from the Goathland (50 minutes' drive) to Grosmont route, leaving a footpath for scenic strolls. The wider park is laced with trails of all lengths, taking walkers to landmarks like the White Horse hill carving at Kilburn, 40 minutes away, and the crags of Roseberry Topping, dubbed the Yorkshire Matterhorn.

The views and emptiness of this area are endlessly impressive; for a contrast, see what humans can do with a trip round the Baroque splendour of Castle Howard (20 minutes). You can easily spend a day exploring the lakes and fountains, woodlands and walled gardens of this mighty estate even before you set foot inside the house.

Over the moors, the sea beckons with Whitby an hour away for coastal walks, seal-spotting boat cruises and fishing trips as well as a museum devoted to its number-one son Captain Cook… and of course the ruined abbey that inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula.

At a similar distance and justifiably proud of its clifftop location, Scarborough draws visitors for its castle and beach, the traditional amusements of Luna Park fairground and the marine wonders of the SEA LIFE aquarium.
