Pitches

  • Hardstanding touring pitches to the rear of a North Yorkshire pub
  • York city centre 10 minutes by train; Castle Howard 25 minutes’ drive
  • Pub and restaurant; walks along the River Ouse five minutes’ stroll
Little beats a Yorkshire camping holiday – but a Yorkshire camping holiday behind a pub probably comes up trumps. The pub in question here is The White Horse, a historic inn at Upper Poppleton, a North Yorkshire village on the outskirts of ancient York, which can be reached by train or bus. Bus service number 10 stops directly outside and the trip takes half an hour; alternatively the railway station is five minutes’ walk, and you can be in the city centre in less than 10 minutes. The large car park to the rear of the pub has space for just a handful of self-contained motorhomes. It’s dog friendly and there are scenic walks along the River Ouse (five minutes’ stroll) and in the York Community Woodland (five minutes’ drive). The White Horse serves a seasonally changing menu, including speciality pies and Sunday roasts using fresh local produce. There’s a good selection of beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks, and a beer garden for balmy summer evenings.

What customers say

This campsite is praised for its excellent location in a nice village, with a bus stop directly outside providing easy access to York. Guests highlight the very tasty food and excellent service at the accompanying pub. Staff are described as friendly and helpful. However, some visitors found the parking fee of £20 to be expensive, particularly when no facilities were available. One review noted a limited pub opening, affecting their evening plans.

Liked Staff were so friendly here, very welcoming. Pub closed early, gate shut so felt safe. Other campers in. Great meal, no charge for night when eating at pub - bonus we didn’t realise. Able to use very clean toilet facilities in pub.

Disliked Nothing to dislike here.

Liked Ruhig
