Pool Bridge Farm: Camping field

General

  • Peaceful campsite on a North Yorkshire farm-turned nature reserve
  • A 20-minute drive to central York, and 30 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Secluded pitches near a fishing lake, with dark skies and wildlife

Pool Bridge Farm is a peaceful grass campsite on a 12-acre field lined with ancient oak trees, and it’s a super base for exploring the North Yorkshire moors as well as its city attractions. Even though you’re in the middle of the countryside here, it’s only a 20-minute drive to historic York and all its museums, restaurants and riverside walks.

The farm itself is run as a mini nature reserve dedicated to preserving local wildlife, and guests have the chance to spot barn owls hunting and kestrels feeding – and if you’re very quiet, deer, foxes, and badgers might just show their faces. It’s also an exceptional fishing spot for anglers, who can net carp, tench and perch in two large lakes.

You can cycle into York (30 minutes) along a route accessed from the farm, or head off into the North York Moors National Park for plenty of biking and walking options over glorious moorland.

Thanks to the lack of light pollution, the site is in a dark area. You can be pottering around Rievaulx Abbey or living it up among the bright lights of York, but on a sunny evening, do try to get back to base at nightfall to indulge in a spot of stargazing while cosied up around your firepit.

Modern amenities include a well-maintained toilet and shower block 250m from the camping field, with a path leading along the side of one of the fishing lakes, so you can take in the scenery as you stroll to the facilities (best bring a torch too).

Excellent site for what I wanted. Quiet, isolated site. Allowing easy day trips into York. Located just a few miles of Yorkshire Air Museum and McArthur Glen shopping village. Personal highlight was the owl circling the campsite at dusk. Lovely to see.

Really beautiful, peaceful setting. The use of fire pits and ability to buy logs using PayPal was really great. Toilets were clean, water accessible. We had lovely displays from a barn owl hunting for prey in the evening, and saw lots of rabbits and other bits of wildlife. It was a bit if a cloudy night sadly, but I'm certain the skies would have been incredible!

    Disliked:

You could just about hear the road nearby, but it wasn't particularly disruptive and can't be avoided when the site is so close to York (not that you could tell!)

We booked a lakeside pitch for our camper van but on arrival we loved the meadow site and wanted to swap. The owners were very accommodating and said this was no problem at all. It was spacious and scenic and abundant with birds. Beautiful walks straight from the site and we sat at the retirement lake in the evening and watched and fed the fish. We will definitely be back :)
