Pool Bridge Farm: Grass pitches

General

  • Peaceful campsite on a North Yorkshire farm-turned nature reserve
  • A 15-minute drive to central York, and 30 minutes to Castle Howard
  • Secluded pitches near lakes for fishing and wild swimming

Pool Bridge Farm offers two peaceful grass campsites on a 12-acre field lined with ancient oak trees, and it’s a super base for exploring the North Yorkshire’s moors as well as its city attractions. Even though you’re in the middle of the countryside here, it’s only a 15-minute drive to historic York and all its museums, restaurants and riverside walks.

The farm itself is run as a mini nature reserve dedicated to preserving local wildlife, and guests have the chance to spot barn owls hunting and kestrels feeding – and if you’re very quiet, deer, foxes, and badgers might just show their faces. It’s also an exceptional fishing spot for anglers, who can net carp, tench and perch in two large lakes.

Thanks to the lack of light pollution, the site is in a dark-skies area. You can be pottering around Rievaulx Abbey or living it up among the bright lights of York, but on a sunny evening, do try to get back to base at nightfall to indulge in a spot of stargazing while cosied up around your firepit.

Modern amenities include a well-maintained toilet and shower block close to the Woodside Campsite and a few minutes’ walk from the Meadow Campsite, with a path leading along the side of one of the fishing lakes, so you can take in the scenery as you stroll to the facilities (best bring a torch too).

Fishing fantastic, we fished the first lake which is well stocked. It’s a huge camp site with fire pits and bench sets.

Lovely couple who were very helpful.

Shower, toilets and pot washing area on site.

Super relaxed atmosphere and will definitely return. 5*

    Disliked:

I didn’t dislike anything but perhaps it could be ideal to fill some of the pot holes and add a large light around the toilet/shower honesty box area.

The campsite, the camp fire, fishing, so much space between pitches we had a small tent village! We made bacon and sausage sandwiches on the campfire, the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. We played cricket, football and with Frisbees, we explored the woods. It was a fantastic time.

The staff were really friendly and helped us find our way around. We mentioned that we wanted to buy some fire wood and they said they would deliver it to our pitch. 20 minutes later then came up in a car and dropped it off for us so we didn't have to carry a pile of logs to our tent.

Local attractions

You can cycle into York (30 minutes by bike) along a bridleway accessed from the farm – there’s also a regular bus service passing the farm entrance. Stroll around Roman walls, tour the Gothic Minster and check out the locomotives in National Railway Museum York. Have a flutter at York Racecourse (both 15 minutes’ drive) and spend all your winnings in the designer boutiques at Designer Outlet York (10 minutes).

Alternatively, head off into the North York Moors National Park (50 minutes) for biking and walking over glorious moorland – to add an architectural element to your rambles, wander around the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (50 minutes) or explore follies and temples in the landscaped grounds at Castle Howard (30 minutes).

If you’ve got kids on board, Jorvik Viking Centre is a top spot for its immersive tour around a replica Viking village (complete with smells), or you can book tasting sessions at York’s Chocolate Story (both 15 minutes). Older kids might love ghost tours of night-time streets, but younger children should probably stick to the cute goats and mini-train rides at Piglets Adventure Farm (20 minutes).
