  • Simple, well-kept North Yorkshire site under a mile from Huby
  • A 20-minute drive to York or the Howardian Hills
  • Dogs and kids welcome; good bus services from the village
If you like the idea of a rural break but also value the convenience of having village facilities within a couple of minutes’ drive, find yourself a space at Fox Covert. This North Yorkshire site is in a proper countryside spot surrounded by green farmland, and it’s just a mile from the village of Huby – for when you feel the need for a shop or want to visit a pub (with food) or a Chinese takeaway. The village is a handy hub for various things, but it’s not the only urban option around here: the market town of Easingwold is about 10 minutes’ drive away (for more pubs, shops and places to eat, plus a twice-weekly market), and it will take you about 20 minutes to get to York to visit its historic attractions. Both destinations can be reached by bus from the village. If it’s all about the rural activities for you, you’ll also be well served here: there’s fishing just up the road at Redwood Park (five minutes’ drive), and plenty of scenic walks in the Howardian Hills National Landscape (20 minutes). You can catch up with fluffy alpacas and impressive birds of prey at nearby animal parks, or seek out historic attractions – from Roman sites, to grand stately homes. Back at base, it’s a laidback setup with simple and well-maintained facilities in the form of a couple of toilets and showers, plus plenty of space for kids and dogs to run around.

What customers say

This is a peaceful, spacious campsite with a very friendly and helpful owner, Val. Guests appreciate the quiet location and ample room to pitch tents. Facilities are basic but generally clean. While the location is praised for its proximity to York and scenic surroundings, some visitors note a lack of washing-up facilities and a need for updated toilet and shower blocks, particularly during busier periods.

Electric grass pitch

Liked We had a fantastic stay and would definitely recommend this campsite!

Val, the owner, was absolutely lovely and made us feel really welcome from the moment we arrived. She checked in with us regularly to make sure everything was okay, gave us some really helpful recommendations for places to visit, and even provided us with a fire pit to make our stay that little bit more special.

The campsite itself has lots of space, which meant it never felt crowded, and it was incredibly peaceful and quiet. It was also lovely to feel so safe and comfortable there - even when we had a pretty dramatic thunderstorm!

There were plenty of toilets and showers available, and we rarely had to wait to use them. Everything was really convenient without taking away from the feeling of being away from it all.

The location is great too, with a shop and pub nearby, while also being a brilliant base for getting out and exploring. There are plenty of opportunities for walks, days out and little adventures in the surrounding area.

Overall, it was exactly what we wanted from a campsite: peaceful, spacious, friendly and relaxed. Val really goes above and beyond to make sure her guests have a great stay, and we’d happily come back again!

Electric grass pitch

Liked I liked the friendliness of the owner Val, she was so welcoming and when we realised we had forgotten the playing cards she gave us a pack to use and also UNO which we had also forgotten. She came and had a chat everyday too. The view were pleasant overlooking a horse paddock and flowing fields. Everything what you’d need to decompress. The facilities are basic but they were really clean. This was my son’s first time camping and he loved it. We will definitely be going back. Maybe even in a couple of weeks weather permitting.

Disliked Nothing I disliked at all. There is no signal though that doesn’t matter as you are out in the countryside and that’s to be expected. My son completely let go of his phone and iPad and relished in it.

Electric grass pitch

Liked It was nice quiet site it was very relaxing. Val how ran it was lovely she did walks around to see if every one was ok which I thought was a nice touch. It was not far to get to york some very nice villages around. We would go again to this site

Disliked I would say it was a dislike but the toilet and shower could do with an update.
Only 3 toilet and two showers we didn't have a problem using them but it the site was a busier there could be a bit of waiting time to use them.

Liked Lovely large pitch .An easy walk into the village for a drink in the local pub. Enjoyed a meal in the Cantonese Restaurant also .Lovely food .
Val the owner is wonderful, friendly and helpful 😊. Even visiting each pitch to see if you're ok .Easy drive to Rawcliffe to use the park and ride into York City Centre.

Disliked Not really a dislike ,but would prefer separate Male/female toilets/showers .Val did explain that they are awaiting planning permission to improve the facilities in the future.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Nice location, plenty of space. Friendly host.

Disliked Facilities are very outdated and with a lot of issues - not enough showers, leaky pipes, showers blocking up during use and flooding the block, no washing up facility. I realise that the owner is awaiting permission for new shower block etc but until that's sorted, the current facilities could really do with some maintenance and tidy.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Quiet site with woodland walks nearby perfect for letting the dog run and explore. Plenty of room on a large field and hook up available on a separate field with hedges. The owners restrict the number of bookings so it's unlikely to be crowded. Drinking water and waste disposal. Clean showers and toilets. The owners are friendly and helpful.

Disliked Toilets and showers need updating. I understand that there is a planning application in to build a toilet and shower block with caretakers accommodation. Let's hope they get on and approved it.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked As many other reviewers have said, a back to basics site with the friendliest most pleasant attentive (but by no means in your face!) owner Val. Great value as our pitstop stay before going to a local festival.

Disliked Data reception poor ( not the campsites responsibility of course, but worth knowing)
Very little shade..also worth knowing in case of a heatwave like the one we experienced on 13.8.26. it was at least 36° the day we were there 🥵

Local attractions

With more than 100 residents, the York Bird of Prey Centre (five minutes’ drive) is a top spot to learn about the habits of owls, hawks, eagles and other raptors. In addition to flight displays (where audience participation is encouraged), the centre runs a number of experiences that allow visitors to handle the birds, including walks and photography days. If you’re into dramatic ruins, check out those of Byland Abbey (15 minutes), built in the 12th century and closed by Henry VIII in 1538, after which it fell into decline. The scale of this religious complex is humbling, and there’s also an impressive collection of medieval floor tiles. The Minster in York (20 minutes) is a soaring edifice with remarkable stained-glass windows and far-reaching views from the Central Tower. Stroll along the narrow medieval street known as the Shambles, then head to the National Railway Museum to see vintage locomotives or to the Jorvik Viking Centre to delve into the early history of the city.
