  • Glamping cabin at a private animal sanctuary in Huby, North Yorkshire
  • York 25 minutes’ drive, and Flamingo Land Resort 40 minutes
  • Rescue birds and animals on site, plus donkey rides and animal feeding
It’s not that often you get the chance to glamp it up at a private animal sanctuary, but then Cheeky Chicken Cottage in the North Yorkshire village of Huby is just that little bit different. Stay over at this family-friendly spot and you’ll wake every day to a farmyard experience with around 70 rescued animals and birds, ranging from chickens and ducks to donkeys, horses, ponies, Pygmy goats, sheep, cats, dogs… the list goes on. But what of your accommodation? ‘Out of Africa’ is a huge, open-plan safari-themed log cabin with a highly decorative king-size four-poster bed – plus a sofa bed for any kids – with all bedding and towels included. A well-equipped, country-style kitchen corner makes self-catering a breeze (although there are pubs and takeaways within five minutes’ stroll), and there are exclusive-use shower facilities right outside. You’ll always be toasty warm as the place is fully centrally heated, as well as air-conditioned to keep you cool on warmer summer days. Two French doors lead out to private decking that wraps around the cabin, where there’s a barbecue and alfresco dining table and chairs. The lodge is actually located within the property’s animal sanctuary, and you’re welcome to join in with the animal feeding in the morning and evening.

Liked: We enjoyed the stay and feeding the animals. The decoration in our room was amazing. The hosts were really friendly.

Disliked: The WiFi was a bit weak in the room we stayed.

From the manager: lovely to meet you both, glad you enjoyed our home. Sorry about the wifi, its a rural farming village so can be a bit dodgy, thats why we dont advertise it with wifi, so if you get it, its a bonus,!
would love to host you again
best wishes and thank you for choosing us

1 bedroom cabin

Liked: This place is honestly amazing. A real hidden gem in the Yorkshire countryside. The hosts are the most wonderful, down to earth people you can meet and will make your stay here truly memorable.
From homemade cake on arrival to a personalised meet and greet with the animals in the morning.

I’ve seen other reviews mention that you do not have unlimited access to the farm animals during your stay which is true as they have rescue animals and baby chicks etc but the tour in the morning is more than enough as you can pet and hold and feed all the animals with full talks about them if you wish.

The rest of the time you still have the chickens and a lovely cat and dog running around to keep you entertained.

Honestly cannot fault this place and will be bringing my children next time.

From the manager: Thank you Grace, you were a pleasure to host, so glad you liked our little piece of North Yorkshire, and thank you for putting up with our rescued animals, particularly naughty Pablo cat!
Love to see you again

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Loved this place! Stumbled across it on pitch up and I'm so glad we did! Tracy and Gary are both very welcoming, they've created a fantastic quirky place for both the guests and the animals. We stayed in the paddock with our camper, what an experience being so close to donkeys, a horse, ducks, sheep, goats and chickens! Not to mention their beautiful dog too! We got to help feed the animals in the morning which was such an amazing experience, feeding chickens, the rabbits, donkeys, sheep, goats, and I also helped collect the eggs, one from right under one of the chickens, felt so privileged to have had this experience! You can tell Tracy and Gary take immense pride in their place, and have so much love for their animals. We will most definitely be back if we're down this way again! Highly recommend! Thank you for an unforgettable experience! P.s there's an amazing Cantonese just down the road in the beautiful village.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: We absolutely loved this site! The owners couldn’t be more helpful and the animal feeding on the morning was such a great experience. The kids had a brilliant time playing out in the paddock with the other children staying and we loved all the quirky things like the sun/moon gazing chair. We will definitely be back, especially to see our new friends Panda and Pablo.

Disliked: Nothing!

From the manager: Thank you Katy, you were all wonderful guests, (great fancy dress outfits too, we should do a themed camp over) !

Paddock electric optional grass campervan pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: This is not a camp site This is some ones back garden. We was not informed you need a 3 pin plug for ehu. You can only get water from inside there house. No where to wash dishes and you must take you rubbish home. To me £30 a night to stay in a garden with no amenities is a bit expensive. This site Is NOT child friendly. We was told off numerous times for kids well been kids. We was also not allowed see the animals unless the gate was open which was at 10am for about 30 mins while they fed the animals and collect eggs. We booked for 2 night but us and another family who was also booked for 2 night left after the first night.

From the manager: Hi Lee, thank you for your comments, and sorry you left early. As you know we only accept self contained units, but yes, we are happy for our guests to use the utility room in our home to top up on water and use our facilities to wash their pots. There is a note on the bins which says ‘only sorted recyclable rubbish to be left’ sorry you missed this.

Yes this is our back garden (two acres) which
we happily share with like minded camping and animal lovers. We always have spare three pin plugs if guests haven’t brought their own.
A reminder, All animals are viewable from the paddocks/lawns, (donkeys, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, tortoises, horse, cats, dogs, except bunnies and piggies.)
Of course the Animal Sanctuary gates must not be entered without the owners, (we have potentially new and nervous rescued animals and need to ensure their safety and calm surroundings)
Our feeding times are pre explained.
Children love these free of charge animal petting experiences.
The largest demographic of our visitors tend to be parents or grandparents with their children, most of whom return frequently.
They seem to enjoy the large amount of space around their units (no one is crammed in with four metre distancing) and lots of paddock space for children to play and see all the rescued animals.
We appreciate your comments and accept that we were not for you, but wish you all the best in your next holiday, and thank you for trying us out
Tracy and Gary.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: What a wonderful welcome we received from host’sTracy and Gary. Nothing was too much, we had a tour of the site when we arrived. Then the very next morning our seven year old son Euan got to feed all the wonderful animals. He was in his element, helping Tracy and learning about the animals! To stay in this site it’s all about the animals! So you need to be self sufficient in terms of toilets/sanitation etc. however my husband loved the Elsan disposal point! So clean and easy to use! Great that we had EHU as well! We will definitely be back! Thank you so much for all your hard work and time looking after the animals and educating your guests on their care! Staying at Cheeky Chicken Cottage has definitely been a highlight of our holiday! 🥰

Disliked: That we only stayed for two nights we should have stayed longer and we will definitely be back in the summer next time!

Local attractions

Chances are you will lose your kids to the cuddly hens and ducks the moment you arrive at Cheeky Chicken Cottage, but just in case you manage to lure them away, promise more feathery friends during hawk walks and owl feeding at York Bird of Prey Centre (five minutes’ drive). Of course, you can also bribe your offspring with adrenaline rides and big cats at Flamingo Land Resort (40 minutes). Spend a day getting to know ancient York (25 minutes’ drive/bus ride) with a walk around the medieval walls, a climb up 275 steps to York Minster’s viewing platform for spectacular city views and a jaunt around the immersive dioramas at Jorvik Viking Centre. If it’s fresh North Yorkshire air you’re craving, have a stroll along the River Derwent in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes); when the kids are demanding a trip to the seaside, the east-coast resorts of Filey and Scarborough are both about an hour’s drive away.
