General
- Family-run site in Ryedale, 45 minutes' drive from York
- In an area of local hikes and undisturbed byways
- Restaurant on site in a heated Lapland tent
The Canadian Air Force crew who stayed at Yorkshire's Wombleton Airfield in WWII mightn't have had a hugely luxurious site to stay in, but it's fairly certain that airmen of all ilks would have found Canadian Fields highly shipshape…
Named after the airfield's nickname, nearby Canadian Fields is a family-run company in Yorkshire's Ryedale, run by folk who want to share their extensive knowledge of this excellent area with other curious and like-minded peeps who come to explore it. It's in a pretty good location too, just a few miles south of the North York Moors National Park and within an hour's drive of York and Harrogate.
A favourite of guests is the Gi Sukawaka Restaurant in the site's heated Lapland tent, serving breakfasts and evening meals (eg pie night for a fiver) as well as pot suppers and breakfasts to be heated up and had in one's tent. Picnic hampers stocked with local produce are available to take away.
There's also the Cedar Lodge, the Canadian Fields main building, which has a shop selling homemade jams, chutneys, homemade cakes and quite a bit more; the lodge also houses extra showers, toilets, a washing machine and a tumble dryer.
Dogs are very welcome at Canadian Fields and lots of walks are nearby; please just keep your pooch on a lead while on site.
There are showers on site a short distance from the safari tents.

Local attractions
As aforementioned, this is walking land, so take the dog, a picnic or both and go off to explore Ryedale and its surrounds: the local area is full of hiking trails and undisturbed byways, as is the North York Moors National Park a few miles away.
If you're getting around by car, there's not far to go to reach some of North Yorkshire's top attractions. The atmospheric ruins of Rievaulx Abbey (a thriving Cistercian abbey until Henry VIII got his mitts on it) are 10 minutes away, as is the National Trust estate at Nunnington Hall. A little further beyond (20 minutes' drive) is the utterly gorgeous Castle Howard (tipped by many as one of the nation's finest stately homes).
For urban days, take your pick from York, 45 minutes away (for the National Railway Museum, minster, Jorvik Viking Centre and an amble down The Shambles), and Harrogate, an hour away, to see the spa town's Royal Pump Room and indulge in genteel afternoon teas. If the sea air calls your name, head east for 45 minutes to get to the beach at Scarborough.
