General

  • Family-run site a few miles from York
  • Full of local hikes and undisturbed byways
  • Restaurant on site in a heated Lapland tent

The Canadian Air Force crew who stayed at Yorkshire's Wombleton Airfield in WWII mightn't have had the luxury of safari tents to stay in, but it's fairly certain that airmen of all ilks would have found the accommodation at highly shipshape.

Named after the airfield's nickname, nearby Canadian Fields is a family-run company in Yorkshire's Ryedale, run by folk who want to share their extensive knowledge of this excellent area with other curious and like-minded peeps who come to explore it. It's in a pretty good location too, just a few miles south of York and a quick drive from the North York Moors National Park.

A favourite of guests is the Gi Sukawaka Restaurant in the site's heated Lapland tent, serving breakfasts and evening meals (eg, pie night for a fiver) as well as pot suppers and breakfasts to be heated up and had in one's tent. Picnic hampers stocked with local produce are available to take away.

There's also the Cedar Lodge, the main building, which has a shop selling homemade jams, chutneys, homemade cakes and quite a bit more; the lodge also houses extra showers, toilets, a washing machine and a tumble dryer.

Dogs are very welcome at and lots of walks are nearby; please just keep your pooch on a lead while on site.

There are showers on site a short distance from the safari tents.

My first camping experience and it was so much better than I anticipated! What a fabulous site! Clean toilets, clean showers, little park for the kids, lovely restaurant although it was fully booked so we were unable to eat there on the evening which was a huge shame, cute little shop and it is right next to a beautiful village. To top it all off the weather couldn’t have been any better!

    Disliked:

The dogs barking near by throughout the night- must be a kennels close by.

We loved the whole area and the camping field was lovely and flat, very clean and lovely play area. Facilities were brilliant we enjoyed every minute of it.

    Disliked:

Only let down was there was no spaces for an evening meal. You had tables outside and a member of staff asked the chef if we could use them and they said no as too busy in restaurant. If we had known we could have booked when booking to stay. But didn't spoil it we still enjoyed our stay very much. We will be back xx

The atmosphere was excellent. So tranquil and relaxed throughout the day and it is in great location to local attractions like the Pickering train lines. It is also close enough to other villages like Helmsley which we liked.

We were spoiled for facilities. There are showers, toilets, washing machine, dryer, ice pack freezer, communal freezer, play area, onsite restaurant, shop and plenty of space for our little one to just run around. Free wifi. Everything is clean and tidy.

The staff were very friendly and know the local area well to recommend places for you. We couldn't have asked for more.

Simply the best for a last minute camping trip with a toddler. Great value for money.

    Disliked:

The only drawback was the animals at night. They are either on site or very nearby and just like to make noise at night, especially the dogs. I'm not sure if it is part of the organisation but they were very loud.

Great site with nice level pitches. Well laid out site too. Some great facilities on site and the toilets and showers were clean and functional. Lovely restaurant and they even deliver to your tent!! Lovely part of the country and not too far away from local shops and attractions. Would defo stay again!!

    Disliked:

Imo.. I felt that the toilets and showers could do with updating and extending. They were obviously cleaned regularly and well maintained but I felt as though they needed some modernisation. There asap wasn't many of them. To us that want a problem as the site wasn't too busy but I could see how during busier periods it could be. I also felt that the bin area needed some attention. There was a lot of disused building materials present and although it was only the bin area, I still felt it could have been presented a lot better. Still.. none of these things put us off from staying again.

Quiet site, nice surroundings, small kids play area, breakfast expensive but nice -the wasps in the restaurant.

    Disliked:

Wasps everywhere must be a nest on site because it came unbearable couldn’t av stayed longer than the one night because of this but then wouldn’t av wanted to after the appalling customer service at tea time. We arrived shortly before our friends, also a family with young children, we weren’t given any information about the restaurant but we didn’t ask, our friends however did ask so obviously wanted to use it was told it was open 5:30pm-9:00pm, was not told to book. We arrived at the restaurant at 7:40 and was told no room for us even tho it seats 40, which I noted at breakfast the following morning. There were tables of 8 which is what we needed with 2 people at them, we were given a take away snack menu no trying to accommodate us. We then suggested 2 tables of 4 & also returning in half an hour, we was told we wouldn’t be seated tonight. Then a family left & a table of 8 was available but we were told it was booked for 8:30 it was now 8:00 & was told we wouldn’t be finished. I work in customer service I find this diabolical our children were starving & this service I couldn’t believe, if only we were told to book. What made it worse was we ordered the snacks we had no choice, then returned to the restaurant at 8:40 it was almost empty no booking of 8 for 8:30 they blatinley lyed, unbelievable!! I also feel for the young man trying to deal with our requests because it wasn’t his fault he was just taking orders from the manager who wouldn’t show her face, 1 star for the nice site & surroundings & I’d give a -100 Jenny if I could for your rude diabolical customer service, no doubt we won’t be returning.

A family friendly site where our kids had a fantastic time. A large number of families from the North East of the country (who I have to say are the most friendly people). Lots of space for the children to play football, cricket, fly kites, frisbee. There is also a play area.

    Disliked:

The number of wasps around the site made sitting out through the day quite uncomfortable. Myself and another lady were both stung during our stay. Our last night was also spoiled by a group of 14/15 year old girls who turned up unsupervised despite the guidelines for the site stating otherwise. A good night's sleep was ruined by them laughing and screaming at each other till about 3.30am.
