  • Peaceful and rural site under five miles from the centre of York
  • Reach the city centre with a five-minute walk and a 15-minute bus
  • Camping kitchen, play area and Australian barbecue; dogs welcome
Staying in the city isn’t for everyone; some would much rather cradle their morning cuppa in a peaceful field somewhere nearby. If that's you, you might be very thankful for the introduction to Ashfield Touring Caravan Park just under five miles from the historic city centre of York. There are no busy city streets here, that’s for sure. The family-run site is surrounded by green fields. However, you’re still all set to stroll along The Shambles, snap pictures of York Minster and sink your teeth into the city’s famed chocolates by day. You see, Ashfield Touring Caravan Park is just a five-minute walk away from the nearest bus stop, where it’s a 15-minute ride into the city centre. It’s peaceful and scenic out in this rural part of Yorkshire. Grab a freshly baked treat from the on-site cake shed (open Friday to Sunday) before taking a morning stroll in Hagg Wood, a mile away. If you're a cyclist, get your bicycle ready for some action along The Route 66 Dunnington or the Stamford Bridge cycle route too; both are nearby. After your day on the trails – or city streets – you should be pleased to reunite with the excellent facilities back on site. A heated shower and toilet block has music and accessible facilities. There’s a camping kitchen with a microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge and freezer to help you prep and pack your meals. The kids should be pleased to have a play area at their disposal too; it’s next to a picnic space and Australian-style barbecue. That's not all. The site also has a licensed shop with essentials, a washing-up area, laundry facilities, chemical waste disposal, fresh water points and wifi.

Local attractions

York is right there (a five-minute walk and a 15-minute bus ride) for walks down the alleys that inspired the Harry Potter world's Diagon Alley. York's museums will show you everything from a reconstructed Viking village to York’s chocolate heritage. All sorts of unusual activities take place in the city too, like escape rooms and ghost walks, and that's not to mention its many, varied restaurants and shops. Once you’ve got your fill of the city, whisk the kids over to the York Maze (five minutes’ drive) to solve the giant corn maze. They should also like a little trip to the Beetle Bank Farm (five minutes), where it’s possible to walk the alpacas and say hello to other farmyard creatures like goats, pigs and rabbits. Further afield are the walks of the North York Moors National Park (40 minutes) and Yorkshire Dales National Park (an hour), and the beaches of the east coast: tick off Scarborough, Bridlington and Hornsea (all within an hour or so).
