General

  • Small and friendly farm site three miles outside historic Selby
  • Within easy driving distance of Leeds, York and the Yorkshire Dales
  • Woodland walks and bike rides from the site

While holing up in the countryside, it’s only natural that one might every now and then fancy sipping on a pint down at the local village pub: if you’re partial to such pursuits, there’s a good inn down the road that serves a splendid selection of real ales alongside a menu of tasty pub grub.

As well being a swift and simple drive to historic Yorkshire hotspots like Bolton Abbey, Carlton Towers, Nostell Priory, Harewood House and Castle Howard, access to York’s handsome historic core and the Yorkshire Dales is easy from Moss Hagg Farm Campsite too, and the award-winning beaches at Hornsea, Withernsea and Scarborough are hour-and-a-quarter away by car should you fancy packing up your bucket and spade and heading out for a day by the sea.

Moss Hagg is a small and friendly farm site a mere three miles from the North Yorkshire town of Selby and its shops, inns and eateries, and the medieval abbey and crumbling 15th century gatehouse there make for easy town-based sightseeing options nearby.

If you’re more of a wildlife watching sort, the forested area from which the farm takes its name is filled with furry and feathered critters, and is also a highly pretty spot for a shaded stroll, a woodland bike ride or a stealthy game of hide and seek.

The pitches look out across wide open country fields, and facilities on site are kept nice and simple to facilitate highly serene stays, with drinking water taps plus showers and toilets on hand to keep guests watered, clean and comfy. Firepits are available on site, and the wood burned in them must be purchased on site.

Please note

A charge of £1.00 applies for the use of shower.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

    abusive reply to review
    no refund despite there error

From the manager...

Our prices are clearly published so they should be no surprise.
We do not allow electric in tents.
Your friends did not book a pitch but asked if we could reserve them one, they have paid nothing. We offered a no electric pitch but they turned this down and left.
We do not like abusive or rude campers, so may I suggest you go elsewhere next time.

Using the sites own fire wood / put as ours were better quality! 2/3 toilets had no paper for duration of our stay. Showers were not convenient but weren't expecting luxury so fine.

From the manager...

Using the site firewood is clearly stated in the site rules.
Trespassing on our neighbours land is definitely not allowed and it was lucky that we knew the landowner.
Taking wood from our hedges or our neighbours woodland/hedges ( trespassing on someone else land is illegal, lucky we knew the landowner) is not allowed, as it is used to protect the local wildlife, also breaking/cutting branches from our trees is not allowed.
I think your claim of your wood being better than you had taken it from our hedge is a bit cheeky.
Our toilets are serviced on a regular basis, so I am surprised, you state there was no toilet paper, we are only up the drive and if you have a problem ie: a toilet has run out of toilet paper, please ring the bell.

I think your moan comes down to me working with my neighbour, to stop your kids being done by the Police for trespassing on a neighbours land.

Please all stick to the rules and do not trespass on neighbouring fields/property.

Kind regards
Ian

Arrived an hour earlier but was welcomed with a smile & told that we was welcome to pitch-up :) anywhere we wanted on the field. Toilet & showers were all clean both male & female. Field which we stayed was clean & tidy, plenty of room to pitch-up. Yes you do have to pay for the use of showers, but it's cheap to pitch here so we didn't see this as a negative of the site.
No kids facilities which was a plus for us.
Drinking water could of been a bit better signposted as it was 'hidden' in a tree/bushy area, we had to ask where it was. There is a road beside the field but didn't really bother us and there wasn't that much traffic, no noise issues. Had a great relaxing stay, nice little camp site & to say it was the kids holidays it was lovely & quiet. We enjoyed our stay & would recommend to others.
We was looking for a nice quiet night camping & this is exactly what we got. Thank-you!

Any campsite that invents rules that prevent tents using hookups deserves a poor review.
Seems like a simple request, Plenty of unused hookups. "No". 'Why not?' "Policy". Well ok, suit yourselves but don't expect happy campers or a good review. Shame really, the chickens were charming but the list of rules was ridiculous and the owners attitude off-putting.

From the manager...

We have experienced, and know of other campsites, that have experienced situations where people have used electric hook ups in tents without proper leads, connections or electrical protection. Items that are made for indoor use have been used outside, this includes toasters, electric grills and old bar heaters which are fatal if they are touched without the proper protection in place.

We as a campsite have a Duty of Care to all our campers.

We shall not be taking the risk of supplying electricity to tents.

We informed this camper when they booked and they still chose to show up expecting electric hook up, they then turned down an alternative pitch.

the open space, the simpleness of the site and the very friendly owners. I arrived without a bottle opener and they took the top off my wine around 10 p.m with a smile, and also took interest in our 2 little ones who were fascinated with the onsite chickens - very friendly people who couldn't do enough for us.

The kids also loved playing in the trea's with other kids making friends, they didn't miss the fact that there was no playground as there was plenty to do and explore.

Close enough to Scarborough and the coast, - it only took us 1 hour 15 mins and we would recommend the site.

    Disliked:

Local attractions

Settled on the outskirts of Selby, you’re just about equidistant between the topping Yorkshire cities of Leeds and York, both with their very own vibe: for heaps of history, handsome architecture and a bygone feel, head to York; for a fun young vibe, shopping centres filled with swanky shops, and street food-style cuisine, speed yourself to lovely Leeds.

Out of the urban centres, Moss Hagg Farm Campsite is also well placed for day trips to the Yorkshire coast and its award-winning beaches at Hornsea, Withernsea and Scarborough, or a little closer to home inland the Yorkshire Dales is a cinch too from the site.

If you’ve got tiny peeps in tow, attractions like York Dungeon, the National Railway Museum and Chocolate Story in York should keep them (and you) more than amused; if instead you’re heading into Leeds, the meerkats, butterfly house and reptile enclosures at Tropical World are sure also to be a smash hit.
