What customers say
This is a basic, wild camping site offering a peaceful retreat with friendly hosts and sheep for company. Guests appreciate the quiet atmosphere and picturesque setting, with some noting the convenience of changing huts and nearby food options. The access road is described as steep and uneven, and some found the site pricey for the basic facilities, particularly the single portaloo. Improvements to directions and the portaloo experience are noted as areas for development.

Liked Very quite wild camping , sheep roaming around the field with you, just a porta loo on the way in , if you just want somewhere quite and simple to stay this is great

Liked Quiet. Nice food from butchers
Disliked Very steep uneven temporary road to an uneven camp field. One portaloo for whole site which was very smelly and no toilet roll. Hosts are not present, no clear direction either

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations.
We would, however, like to clarify a few points for future guests. We contacted you on the day of your arrival and asked you to let us know when you arrived, as you had pre-ordered a meat pack and fire pit. We were dealing with a function on site at the time, but as soon as we were free, we brought your order and fire pit directly to you. We also offered, and provided, a lift to the main road so that you could get your taxi.
As a newly established wild campsite, the access road has only recently been put in and, as explained during your stay, it is currently an uneven temporary road while we continue developing the site. We are actively working on improving the access and facilities as the campsite grows.
We’re also sorry that the toilet facilities were not up to the standard you expected. We take comments regarding cleanliness and toilet roll availability seriously and will make sure these are addressed.
We appreciate all feedback as we continue improving the site, although we feel it is important that the review also reflects the assistance provided during your stay.

Liked Beautiful peaceful site, ideal for a quiet escape. Portaloo was spotless, handy hut for changing, and picnic tables were a bonus. We'll definitely come back.

From the manager: We really appreciate your kind review! We’re so pleased you enjoyed our facilities on site and liked the experience. Hope to see you again in the future!
Excellent semi wild camping site.
Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch
Liked We enjoyed having the huge field to ourselves for one of the nights and only one other tent on the second. Lovely sheep for company. Plenty of space for kids to run around if you like that. We had a camper van so self sufficient but the portaloo very welcome. Only one though so could get messy if a busy field of campers. We walked into the town centre which was easy and got a taxi back in the late evening to avoid the uphill walk back. Would be happy to use this base again. Good value.
Disliked No issues to list here.

Just returned from our first wild…
Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch
Liked Just returned from our first wild camping trip at Stepney Stays.
heres a few pointers for others that might like to enjoy this site:
1. The field is an active sheep field so there's lots of poop - not a problem if just take something to move the little piles away from your camping area.
2. the field has a lot of thistles = painful if you stand on them - take a pair of gloves and they lift easily.
3. There's one portaloo on the field - I panicked with the number of campers BUT it didn't smell (even in July) and people respected it and kept it clean. The owners do advertise a loo on the farm - (we couldn't find it - no signage) - it is up a steep climb in the main entrance so not one for when you're desperate.
4. you CAN take cars onto the camping field.
5. you might meet Larry the Lamb - a hand reared lamb that lives with its owners in the house on the camping field
6. look out for the deer on the field early evening :)
7. theres a lovely hut at the bottom of the field for changing in - its equipped with all sorts of products you might need to keep clean :)
all in all a lovely weekend for our first wild camping trip :)

There was nobody else there…
Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch
Liked There was nobody else there
Disliked I knew it would be basic which I don't mind if you get a peaceful stay. The campsite was attatched to a wedding venue which was playing very loud terrible music untill the early hours. The road to the campsite is very poorly maintained I was surprised by car wasn't damaged. One portable toilet at the edge of the field.

It was “ok” as a field to park the van for the night but expensive.
Non-electric grass and earth motorhome pitch
Liked It was what it said it was. Very wild camping. Basically a field that you can park your campervan in. It’s close enough to the centre for a small taxi fare. The light pollution is almost non existent so star gazing was good.
Disliked We didn’t see anyone else the whole time, although we arrived quite late and left early. The “toilet block” is a single portaloo and although the toilet looked clean the smell was quite overwhelming. The site itself I didn’t dislike but the price is expensive considering there’s no hand washing facilities and it’s basically just a field. Compared to some sites for the same cost it is lacking - if the cost was £15/ £20 per night it would have been more correctly priced as far as I’m concerned. The distanced sea views - I couldn’t see I’m afraid.
Take your chocks too cos it’s mainly not level.
I feel a little bad saying disliked because I didn’t dislike as such, but be aware it’s very basic for the price. It’s mainly the cost for me as it really is wild camping as described.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave such detailed feedback. We’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed the peaceful setting, the dark skies for stargazing, and that the site was exactly as described – a simple, wild camping experience.
We also appreciate your comments about the pricing. We’ve only recently started welcoming guests, so feedback like yours is genuinely helpful, and we’re already taking our pricing into consideration as we continue to develop the site.
Just to clarify, while there is a portaloo in the camping field for convenience, there is also a toilet block with handwashing facilities in the farmyard. This information is included in our welcome message, so we’re sorry if this wasn’t clear or was missed during your stay.
As you mentioned, our site is intentionally very basic and is marketed as wild camping rather than a fully serviced campsite. We understand that this style of camping won’t suit everyone, and we appreciate your honest opinion on the value for money. Your comments will help us as we continue to improve the experience for future guests.
