  • Small site on a farm on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • Half an hour’s drive from Scarborough and 40 minutes from Whitby
  • Dogs welcome; easy access to hiking and biking trails in Dalby Forest
Fancy a spot of wild camping in a location that puts you within easy reach of windswept moors, North Sea beaches and forested walks? Then head to South Moor Farm, on a small livestock farm in the middle of Dalby Forest, a large wooded area on the southern edge of North York Moors National Park. With just a handful of pitches on well-maintained grass plots, this relaxed and rural spot comes with access to basic amenities, including a water tap, waste recycling and a disposal point for chemical waste (green chemicals only). There are two toilets and a shower on site, too. The pitches are in a paddock between the owners’ house and a barn, within easy cycling or walking distance of many local rights of way. A couple of pubs can be reached within about a 10-minute drive, and larger towns like Scarborough are half an hour away if you fancy a day at the beach or a night out – or if you need to stock up on essentials or camping equipment. Dogs are allowed at this family-friendly site, but please keep them on a lead at all times around the farm.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: The site was great. The owners really accommodating. The dogs were allowed in the fields away from stock which was great. A site that I want to return to time and again. A place I would go to on my own.

From the manager: Oh Dear, sorry you found "01/06/25 Filthy toilets and shower. It would be great if guests told us if there is a problem with the toilets or showers, we would put it right.
The toilets are cleaned requarly and checked a couple of times during the day.
Other guests have said;-
28/05/25 Showers and toilet facilities were clean and hot.
25/05/25 The toilets were warm and clean.
We feel £1 for the shower is reasonable, some guests are happy with that, some are not.
We could increase the site fees and make the shower free but we prefer our lower site fee.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Very quiet farm owned by an old couple. Lots of free range animals. Dogs cats birds all roaming free. Has everything you need nothing fancy mind you. Simple and straightforward just the way I like it. Did the red route with my son. The bike trail was fantastic loved every minute of it. The camp site is in the perfect place to ride the trails. I had a motorhome so even tho the weather was rubbish for a day we kept nice and dry and did not get stuck due to wet ground. the WiFi is fast and fantastic in the field.

Liked: Everything, the owners initial email was super helpful to be able to find the site.
Upon arrival, greeted by Robert. Helped us to find a great spot to park up for the night.
Amazing views surrounding the farm and an additional bonus of the cows, hens and horse and of course the 2 dogs. My daughter loved this so much. Especially being able to feed the hens in the morning.
WiFi worked a treat and showers and toilet facilities were clean and hot.
We were only here for 1 night and really wish we booked to stay for more. We will definitely be back!

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Loved the location right on the edge of the forest, literally backpack on and walked from the van all day. Would be excellent for biking aswell.
The site was very small with 8 vans at most during our stay and x2 tents in a different field perfect.
There was x2 mixed toilets, x1 shower and x1 potwash sink. There was never an occasion we had to wait to use any(the plus of being such a small site).
The x2 farm dogs would come round for a pet during the day and the free range chickens were always on the lookout for crumbs you had dropped.
From the van the view was of open fields full of cows with their calfs, forest, valleys and rolling hills.
Will definitely return with the bikes next time.

Disliked: Just the weather which nobody can control (very windy).

Excellent location for Dalby forest.

Disliked: Wind was super high the weekend we stopped. Cut our stay short due to it destroying our awning.

Not sure how I feel about the shower being £1 per 5 mins. I get the reasoning to keep people from overstaying as thetr is only 1 cubicle. No good if you don't have coins. I usually have some but worth a note. (Does say this in the site description and I was aware)

From the manager: Thank you for the review,
Sorry your awning was damaged by wind, we are looking at planting more trees to act as wind break.
We are usually available and have a supply of £1 coins for the shower.
If you do not have any cash, we can take card payments.

Great location, lovely hosts, clean bathrooms.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Location was really close to dalby forest, a 2 minute drive to be inside the barriers. The hosts gave us a voucher which was for £3 all day parking in dalby, saving us £12!!
Ground was flat which was great for our tent, except a few small twigs sticking up which punctured the ground sheet, but not an issue.
The toilets were warm and clean.
There are two dogs roaming the farm that are absolute delights and got on well with our dog.
Host were informative and helpful and was around for any issues, which there were none!

Disliked: No internet service in the area, or dalby. No wifi. But when you stay on a farm you want to be away from electricity so not an issue!

From the manager: Thank you for the review.
Our friendly dogs, Agnes and Doris, will be kept in house if guests do not like them roaming or they do not get on with their dogs,
Internet is available near the house. near the barn and some parts of the field!!

Couldn’t ask for more!

We had a problem with our van as we were leaving and the owner couldn’t have been more helpful and understanding. We were soon on our way.

A perfect holiday.

Local attractions

Start your exploration of Dalby Forest at the visitors’ centre (15 minutes’ drive), where you can get expert advice on the best hiking routes. If you’re into birdwatching, head to the Raptor Viewpoint, where valley views come with sightings of ospreys and sparrowhawks. At National Trust - Bridestones, Crosscliff & Blakey Topping interesting rock formations date from the Jurassic Age. In Scarborough (half an hour), the 1930s Scarborough North Bay Railway, which goes through Northstead Manor Gardens and along the North Bay, is an effortless way to explore (some of) the town. Stop for an ice cream or fish and chips on either of the two sandy beaches, which are separated by a headland topped by the ruins of Scarborough Castle. Whitby (40 minutes) is renowned for its connection to Bram Stoker, who was inspired to create his character Dracula by the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, on a headland accessed via the 199 Steps. Across the River Esk, the Whalebone Arch overlooks the working harbour and is a great frame for a picture of the abbey.
