  • Dogs welcome; splendid views of the coast; nearby restaurant
Motorcycle racing and sandy beaches might sound like a fairly unusual combo, but you do get prime access to both at Oliver’s Mount. First of all, for the sporting enthusiasts among you: this green pop-up site is part of the road-racing circuit of the same name, a historic track that sees roaring action six weekends a year. It’s a top spot to catch some motorcycle races and car rallies. Having said that, away from those motorbike-focused weekends, the site is remarkably peaceful, and an excellent base from where to explore Scarborough and its seaside attractions (10 minutes’ drive) and the coast of North Yorkshire. On site are level grassy fields for your tent or motorhome, with heaps of space for children to run around and play, plus woodland walks that ought to make your dog’s tail wag with delight. Not forgetting the pretty epic views of the coastline from this elevated plateau… From a practical point of view, there are two toilet blocks, showers and a washing-up area. Water is available too, as are chemical disposal facilities. Barbecues are allowed, and the nearest shop is a five-minute drive away. But why cook when you can be cooked for? There’s a café/restaurant within walking distance (about 10 minutes), and you get spectacular views over Scarborough South Bay with your breakfasts, burgers or locally sourced fish.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Views and open spaces to pitch in. Mostly peaceful stay. Hot water for washing up and ladies’ toilets whilst basic were clean and had everything needed.

Disliked Gents toilets were a bit pongy due to the open urinal. Site wasn’t managed so people were not following the rules. Plenty of dogs off leads and charcoal BBQs in use which considering the high fire risk this summer is ridiculous putting others at risk.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Easy check in and pitch up. Lots of space both on the pitch and in the camp in general. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Both the showers and toilets are clean and well stocked. Overall the camp is clean with plenty of bins available.

Disliked The only thing we disliked was the distance to local amenities, however we knew this before going.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Massive field. Close to the Motorcycle track. Cafe nearby for a coffee. Lidl and petrol station only down the road.Owner seemed friendly.

Disliked The toilets where ok, but they need a really good clean. Toilet rolls often seen on the floor or ran out. Cobwebs. And it had a bit of a smell to it. It did have hot water though.

Local attractions

Scarborough’s two sandy beaches (South Bay and North Bay) are separated by a headland topped by the ruins of a medieval castle. At the back of North Bay, the Scarborough Open Air Theatre puts on live music by big international names, and there are more events at the elegant Scarborough Spa, built in the late 19th century. Residents at Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park (10 minutes’ drive) include meerkats, lemurs and alpacas, plus friendly farmyard animals that enjoy being fed (please only use the site-approved feed bags, though). From there, drive a further five minutes to Filey Brigg Cliffs, where you might spot puffins flying overhead. Keen to have a go at paddleboarding or kayaking, but nervous to do it in open water? Head to North Yorkshire Water Park (25 minutes), where you can try these (and other) watersports, or just bounce, slide and splash around the inflatable adventure course.
