  • Peaceful adults-only site on the edge of North Riding Forest Park
  • Scarborough 25 minutes’ drive; Castle Howard half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; five minutes’ walk from the nearest pub
Explore the splendid landscapes of North Yorkshire from the leafy, peaceful surrounds of Coachman Caravan Park. This is an adults-only site, so you will have to leave the kids with their grandparents for a few days. However, do bring your four-legged companions along – not only are they welcome here, but they will likely wag their tails in utter delight at the prospect of epic walkies, whether on the moors (15 minutes’ drive) or on beaches like Cayton Bay (25 minutes). Sitting just off the A170, on the outskirts of the village of Snainton, Coachman Caravan Park has spacious hardstanding and grass pitches. Each pitch comes with its own water and electric hook-up, as well as a night lamp, so you won’t have to don that rather unsexy head torch if you want to read before bed… There’s also a well-maintained toilet and shower block (housed in a Yorkshire stone building). There’s heaps to do in the area for active types: from golfing (a nine-hole course is a five-minute drive away), to fishing and watersports at Wykham Lake (15 minutes); and that’s without taking into account the hiking and biking trails in North Riding Forest Park (15 minutes). Barbecues are allowed; however, with a traditional pub serving home-cooked food right next door, why would you bother? There’s another couple of restaurants in the village, along the A170 (about 10 minutes on foot), or you can head to Scarborough (25 minutes) for fish and chips on the beach.

Liked: Liked nothing as we didn’t stay due to it being overbooked.

The site had a board showing names against the 12 pitches. We, however had our name written along the top as pitch 13!

Disliked: What a fiasco!!!!!!!

We booked this site and rang the number on the booking confirmation asking if we could add an extra night.

The owner said that we could, so we went ahead and booked it.

On arrival we pulled up at a 5 bar gate and my wife got out of the car to see where our pitch was.

There was no warden on site and we asked a couple whose van was parked right on the edge of the verge with the door adjacent to the gravel road. They said we needed to look at the board to see our pitch number .

The board was purpose made with 12 rows numbers one to twelve to mimic the 12 pitches advertised. Everyone had a name against it, but none was our name.

We looked again and I spotted our name right at the top showing us on pitch 13 as an addition. This is on a site with 12 pitches , as per the purposely designed pitch board.

We went back to the people we had spoken to as the confirmed they was on pitch 12 and pitch 13 was behind them. However. There appeared to be a camper van and tent there already. There was no way we could have got out Bailey Unicorn Vigo, awning and Ford kuga anywhere near the pitch and there was nowhere else to park.

We rang the owner who said that someone must have been on our pitch and he would get someone to come and move them off. However, there was nowhere for anyone to move to.

We told the guy we didn’t want to stop as it was clearly over booked. We asked for our money back and he agreed to refund £35 for the Friday evening. But he would not refund the rest as on the Saturday there would be 4 free pitches.

We was not happy and felt that we wanted and refund and didn’t want to return , he just kept going on and on about coming back tomorrow and we could have a pitch! Really, what planet is this guy on.

Needless to say the refund has not arrived.

The following rules are also breeched on this site too.

To avoid the spread of fire, there must be at least 6 metres spacing between facing walls of adjacent caravans, motorhomes or trailer tents and a minimum clear space of 3 metres between adjoining cars/awnings/tents and other items (including windbreaks) in any direction.

If there was fire the entire site would go up !!!

If have taken photographs and intend to contact the licensing authority and share our experience and the photographs too!

The couple we had spoken to was also extremely upset by their situation too.

We spoken to a couple who had pitched on the edge of the road as two tents appeared to be on their pitch. They have also reviewed this site and mentioned our situation in their review.

We was promised a refund if the Friday evening. In fact the owner told us he had refunded it on a number of occasions. He still hasn’t done so!

Pitch up are in conversation with the owner and they don’t appear to be able to receive this unacceptable situation either!!

Disliked: Over crowded no clearly marked pitches badly managed no warden on site. We arrived and just pitched next to access road due to tents taking up three pitches. Another couple arrived to find there was no pitch for them they left demanding a refund

Liked: Leafy Green site. Very well kept. Quiet at night. Dog friendly site.

Disliked: Only 2 bathrooms. Needs a separate toilet to avoid queues. Not nice having to wait for loo because both showers are in use.
No washing up area which is always useful for small campervan users.

Local attractions

Climb the green headland at Scarborough for views of the two wide sandy beaches, then follow the Sea Wall Heritage Trail to learn about the town’s history. Bookworms might want to pay tribute to novelist Anne Brontë, who is buried at St Mary’s Church, while some might prefer to catch a show at the Scarborough Spa. Castle Howard (half an hour's drive) might look familiar even if you’ve never been there before. It’s not a case of déjà-vu, though: it’s just that the house has been used as a location for TV dramas like ‘Victoria’ and ‘Bridgerton’. Its grounds include a walled garden, plus elegant fountains and lakes. In the fishing town of Whitby (40 minutes), the atmospheric clifftop ruins of an abbey (accessed via the puff-inducing 199 Steps) are said to have inspired author Bram Stoker to write ‘Dracula’. Visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, then cross the River Esk to see the Whalebone Arch, the ideal frame for a selfie against the background of the town.
