  • Peaceful adults-only site on the edge of North Riding Forest Park
  • Scarborough 25 minutes’ drive; Castle Howard half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; five minutes’ walk from the nearest pub
Explore the splendid landscapes of North Yorkshire from the leafy, peaceful surrounds of Coachman Caravan Park. This is an adults-only site, so you will have to leave the kids with their grandparents for a few days. However, do bring your four-legged companions along – not only are they welcome here, but they will likely wag their tails in utter delight at the prospect of epic walkies, whether on the moors (15 minutes’ drive) or on beaches like Cayton Bay (25 minutes). Sitting just off the A170, on the outskirts of the village of Snainton, Coachman Caravan Park has spacious hardstanding and grass pitches. Each pitch comes with its own water and electric hook-up, as well as a night lamp, so you won’t have to don that rather unsexy head torch if you want to read before bed… There’s also a well-maintained toilet and shower block (housed in a Yorkshire stone building). There’s heaps to do in the area for active types: from golfing (a nine-hole course is a five-minute drive away), to fishing and watersports at Wykham Lake (15 minutes); and that’s without taking into account the hiking and biking trails in North Riding Forest Park (15 minutes). Barbecues are allowed; however, with a traditional pub serving home-cooked food right next door, why would you bother? There’s another couple of restaurants in the village, along the A170 (about 10 minutes on foot), or you can head to Scarborough (25 minutes) for fish and chips on the beach.

What customers say

This small, adult-only site earns praise for its quiet vibe, friendly staff, and pub-adjacent locale. Pitches are usually roomy and clean, with good water/electric access. However, recent reviews flag major maintenance issues: overgrown grass, overflowing bins, and run-down facilities. Overcrowding and absent staff at arrival are recurring concerns, leaving some guests unable to pitch or find usable spots. While some enjoy the peaceful setting and would revisit, others warn against booking due to persistent problems.

Liked Quietness and small amount of pitches. Have stayed here a few times and like the small site. Coachman Inn right next door which serves excellent food and is a two minute walk from the site.

Disliked No one to greet us and electric point not working. The new owner will need to tidy things up a bit and give the site a little TLC to attract more buisness.

Liked Absolutely nothing it is a total disgrace

Disliked It was disgusting the site isn’t even open or would be fit for purpose. It was overgrown, scaffolding up, weeds and thistles, dead plants. In the toilet and shower block it was full of leaves. It looks nothing like the pictures on pitch up
Pitch up took my deposit and don’t appear to want to discuss it with me I have been told to contact the owner who won’t answer any messages or his phone.
Pitch up are advertising something that isn’t even open and taking money and I suggest that they check that the campsite photos and descriptions are a true reflection of the site.
I had booked 2 pitches and paid both deposits and booked a meal at the pub. We then had to ring round campsites and ended up in sandsend which was not on our agenda and then cancel our meal at the pub.
I will never use pitch up again as the aftercare is shocking

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked A well positioned site close to many lovely areas.
Small site
Wifi hook up
Shower was good .y husband used but I didn't like the dead moths etc in shower base

Disliked In poor state, grass needed cutting. Big weeds and thistles on Stone areas.
Huge amount of rubbish bags piled up at side of toilet area must have been there for weeks. These were removed perhaps following my review on their site. Toilet/showers were dirty and no cleaning bottles to use.

Liked Possibly the fact we could choose our own place as nobody there!

Disliked Overgrown field, no proper hard standing just stones, grass overgrown, weeds galore, large overgrown trees, bushes & weeds. Unusable toilets & showers unsure of when last cleaned or water checked for legionella disease, overflowing rubbish laid on ground as large site bin never been emptied for weeks or months? Stench of dog poo from nearly full bin, nobody on site at all while there but glad we were in our motorhome so could use own toilet & had to boil water for washing etc…. Had to buy large bottled water for our 2 dogs to drink as weather was so hot, some electric not working therefore couple who arrived on day we were going had to plug into ours as in a caravan. Waste water sink if that’s what it was for had human waste all over it so tried to clean it as best we could. I have called North Yorkshire council’s environmental department before we left to complain who also grants licence & said this needs closing down.

Liked We did not stay at this site in the end so unable to clarify what we liked

Disliked When we arrived we tried to ring the number given to us on the website, no one answered. It wasn’t until I left a voicemail that I got a message to ring a different number. The number I rang was for someone from the sister site. They sounded very stressed as they said there was no one that manned the site and just to pitch up wherever there was space.
I explained that there was no space for our tent. Many of the campers that where already there where taking up more space or had hooked up at the wrong electric hook up. I was told to just find space and chill out.
I payed £35 to stay at this sight and was not given the customer service that money warranted. We were not told where any of the facilities were, nor did they care if there was an actual space. When on the phone they only tried to make an excuse that the website we booked on (pitch up.com) had been giving them some real problems.
In the end we left without bothering to try and squeeze in somewhere. We found a different campsite with better facilities and customer service to warrant the money we paid.
This was our first camping trip and coming to this camp sight almost ruined everything for us.

Local attractions

Climb the green headland at Scarborough for views of the two wide sandy beaches, then follow the Sea Wall Heritage Trail to learn about the town’s history. Bookworms might want to pay tribute to novelist Anne Brontë, who is buried at St Mary’s Church, while some might prefer to catch a show at the Scarborough Spa. Castle Howard (half an hour's drive) might look familiar even if you’ve never been there before. It’s not a case of déjà-vu, though: it’s just that the house has been used as a location for TV dramas like ‘Victoria’ and ‘Bridgerton’. Its grounds include a walled garden, plus elegant fountains and lakes. In the fishing town of Whitby (40 minutes), the atmospheric clifftop ruins of an abbey (accessed via the puff-inducing 199 Steps) are said to have inspired author Bram Stoker to write ‘Dracula’. Visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, then cross the River Esk to see the Whalebone Arch, the ideal frame for a selfie against the background of the town.
