General

  • Dog-friendly farm site one mile from Robin Hood's Bay
  • Walking distance from the beach, village and the Cleveland Way
  • Horses welcome; shops and restaurants nearby

Robin Hood’s Bay was once the stomping ground of smugglers, but you’ll be the new sharks about this place… you see, Farsyde Farm is only one mile from the beach and village, so you’ll be well-based for hunting down rockpools, ancient fossils and cobbled streets chock-full with independent shops, pubs and fish and chip shops. Plus, you’ll get to freestyle right onto the Cinder Track or Cleveland Way, as both trails go through the village.

More on that new den of yours… the peaceful Farsyde Farm is surrounded by the coast and countryside and the large field spies over the grand Ravenscar cliffs, the countryside and the sea. When you’re not preoccupied with the views and splendid sunrises or sunsets, dark starry nights take over by night – just the thing after a day spent walking, mountain biking or following family trails locally.

When it comes to getting your go-to snacks and meals, there’s no need to put the car into action either. The village is 15 minutes’ walk away along the Cleveland Way and the shops are well-stocked. Of course, the beach might very well reel you in with its rockpools and fossils (just be sure to take care, especially with the kids).

There are good facilities on site, including two flushing toilets, showers, a tap and a dishwashing area. Those of you who have horses in your flock will be happy to find they’re welcome too, and guided rides are available. An added bonus is that this site is home to a flock of adorable Valais Blacknose sheep.

Only two toilets and one shower which are basic (but clean) and not very well covered

Price for site given facilities was high- it’s basically a field with a toilet

Short walk to Robin Hood’s Bay. Pleasant sea view. Nice hot water in the one shower.

    Disliked:

You have to phone on arrival. There’s no reception point. Chemical toilet disposal point without a water supply. Outdoor washing up sink, clogged with leaves and no hot water. Very bad lighting in the one shower. Uneven hard standing which doesn’t allow much room to manoeuvre in and out. We paid £35 for 2 adults and a dog for one night (£5 for the dog - don’t know what he was paying for). In the past, I’ve only ever paid that sort of price for luxury sites. I had read some negative reviews beforehand, but still wasn’t prepared for how basic it was (given the price). Obviously, the owners believe that the proximity to the bay justifies the cost … but I can’t help feeling a bit ripped off.

We really liked the location of the site- up high on the cliffs looking out over Robin Hoods Bay. A very small site with just a handful of pitches. Basic facilities- outdoor shower and loo ( really clean) and a quirky outdoor sink.

Location and view. We paid £25 per night for this really. The facilities were basic but clean - and maybe all that is allowed without expensive planning consent. So peaceful too. To be appreciated by those that love the outdoors life (and a great network of footpaths)

    Disliked:

Sharing the site! Especially people not happy with the facilities. This is a gem with no company!

Local attractions

So, where to get walking to? You’ll be going off-road on the 22-mile Cinder Track (under half an hour’s walk). Depending on which way you go, Scarborough or Whitby could be your end destination… with the latter, you’ll be on track for the gothic-style Whitby Abbey (15 minutes' drive), and spooky it is, as the 13th-century abbey was the inspiration for the Dracula novel.

The Cleveland Way (under half an hour’s walk) is another cycling or walking route pretty much on your doorstep. It passes through Scarborough and Whitby too, as well the North York Moors and Saltburn-by-the-Sea – there are 109 miles, so you may want to be choosy about which section you go for.

When you’re ready to rest your feet, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (25 minutes) is right and ready for a steam railway trip, perhaps on one of the historic Pullman carriages. As for those of you who aren’t ready for the action-packed activities to end just yet, there are the zipwires and treetop obstacles at Go Ape Dalby (45 minutes) or wakeboarding, paddleboarding, kayaking and an aqua park at North Yorkshire Water Park (45 minutes).

Must see

  • Whitby Abbey (5.3 miles)
  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (12.0 miles)
  • The Moors National Park Centre (14.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Yorkshire Coast (2.4 miles)
  • Bridestones, Crosscliff and Blakey Topping (9.6 miles)
