Farsyde Farm: Visitor image of the view from the campsite

General

  • Dog-friendly farm site one mile from Robin Hood's Bay
  • Walking distance from the beach, village and the Cleveland Way
  • Riding school on site and horses welcome; shops and restaurants nearby

Robin Hood’s Bay was once the stomping ground of smugglers, but you’ll be the new sharks about this place… you see, Farsyde Farm is only one mile from the beach and village, so you’ll be well-based for hunting down rockpools, ancient fossils and cobbled streets chock-full with independent shops, pubs and fish and chip shops. Plus, you’ll get to freestyle right onto the Cinder Track or Cleveland Way, as both trails go through the village.

More on that new den of yours… the peaceful Farsyde Farm is surrounded by the coast and countryside and the large field spies over the grand Ravenscar cliffs, the countryside and the sea. When you’re not preoccupied with the views and splendid sunrises or sunsets, dark starry nights take over by night – just the thing after a day spent walking, mountain biking or following family trails locally.

When it comes to getting your go-to snacks and meals, there’s no need to put the car into action either. The village is 25 minutes’ walk away along the Cleveland Way and the shops are well-stocked. Of course, the beach might very well reel you in with its rockpools and fossils (just be sure to take care, especially with the kids).

There are basic facilities on site, including portaloos, a tap and a dishwashing area. Those of you who have horses in your flock will be happy to find they’re welcome too, as the site has its own riding school (catch the horses and donkeys, cows, ducks and chickens about the site).

Portaloo's were not upkept well, very minimal facilities for the price. Simply a field with a tap and 3 portaloo's.

Really quiet, spacious and set back. Stunning views over the Sea and a quick walk to Robin Hoods Bay. I got a bit lost at first in the actual cottages 😂 so I called the number and the woman who answered was more than helpful and kind!
As a female solo traveller I felt at ease.

Location - amazing view and quick walking access to the beach

    Disliked:

Toilet facilities - very unclean and some portaloos were missing antibac so you couldn't sanitise your hands. The site was not busy (20 other groups max) so I would be incredibly reluctant to see how much more unclean the portaloos get during peak times. Really disappointing as with just a little bit of effort they could be so much cleaner.

From the manager...

The toilets had been emptied and fully serviced by the company that provides them therefore for your arrival on Friday they were spotless as we had no campers on Thursday night. At no point during your stay were they very unclean. We check the loos constantly and replenish toilet rolls etc. Had there been an issue with hand sansiter a quick phone call to myself and I could have put some of our own in them.

Beautiful setting with views of the sea beyond the field of horses, donkeys and cows. A lovely circular walk to Robin Hoods Bay, along the beach to Boggle Hole for a glass of wine and then up the cliff again, back to the campsite. Quite a lot of steps so be prepared and check the tides!

Staying the first weekend of September it was very quiet with plenty of space (only around ten tents/campervans). A very peaceful site and dogs kept on leads. Great for nature lovers and those looking for some peace and quiet.

We were able to book for a single night which is pretty hard to find.

    Disliked:

Stinky portaloos! Having said that they were well equipped with toilet rolls and hand gel.

Local attractions

So, where to get walking to? You’ll be going off-road on the 22-mile Cinder Track (under half an hour’s walk). Depending on which way you go, Scarborough or Whitby could be your end destination… with the latter, you’ll be on track for the gothic-style Whitby Abbey (15 minutes' drive), and spooky it is, as the 13th-century abbey was the inspiration for the Dracula novel.

The Cleveland Way (under half an hour’s walk) is another cycling or walking route pretty much on your doorstep. It passes through Scarborough and Whitby too, as well the North York Moors and Saltburn-by-the-Sea – there are 109 miles, so you may want to be choosy about which section you go for.

When you’re ready to rest your feet, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (25 minutes) is right and ready for a steam railway trip, perhaps on one of the historic Pullman carriages. As for those of you who aren’t ready for the action-packed activities to end just yet, there are the zipwires and treetop obstacles at Go Ape Dalby (45 minutes) or wakeboarding, paddleboarding, kayaking and an aqua park at North Yorkshire Water Park (45 minutes).

Must see

  • Whitby Abbey (8.5 kilometres)
  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (19.3 kilometres)
  • The Moors National Park Centre (23.7 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Yorkshire Coast (3.9 kilometres)
  • Bridestones, Crosscliff and Blakey Topping (15.4 kilometres)
