Hazel Brow Farm Campsite: The site is next to a big barn

General

  • Enclosed, sheltered site in an orchard opposite a Yorkshire Dales farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Reeth village and 35 minutes to Richmond
  • Private footpath to the River Swale runs right from the park

Looking out over green fields grazed on by sheep, and with River Swale walks right from the grounds – how smashing is Hazel Brow Farm Campsite for a serene stay?

With just a handful of pitches, this site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park is also peaceful; situated in the valley bottom below the village, it's surrounded by calm countryside and just across the river from the Swale Trail walking and cycling route (bikes can be hired less than 10 minutes' drive away).

If you’re planning to give your hiking boots a good workout, set forth on the site’s private footpath running down to the River Swale or climb the nearby hills through lush fields for memorable views over Swaledale.

You could also stroll to the village of Gunnerside, a couple of miles west, for its traditional pub and a café – both serving food – or roam to Reeth, four miles to the east, again following the river. Set in a kind of natural amphitheatre, this settlement is where Swaledale meets up with Arkengarthdale and is known for having (yet more) excellent views.

Facilities back at Hazel Brow include a toilet block and a mains water supply. The access lane is quite steep and narrow and, although there is flat space when you reach the bottom, it’s not accessible enough for large, A-class motorhomes – please bear this in mind when booking.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

It was such a beautiful site! We loved it here and are looking to book again. We loved how quiet it was, it was a bonus that we ended up being the only tent picked up too! The surrounding area was lovely aswell, we a lovely walk down the river from the site. The lady who owns it was so lovely too and the toilets were so clean. Even though there was no service on site it made it even nicer to be honest to switch off from the digital world and enjoy the nature and surroundings. The puppy had a whale of a time too!

That's great to know, that's for leaving a review and for being so considerate of the newly hatched chicks too - we'll try and photo their progress if we can get near the nest without too much disturbance!

Lovely little intimate campsite. Lovely owner. We were the only people there! Great location, pub in village nearby and case in Gunnerside a few miles away. Toilets lovely and clean and helped feed the Alpacas! Wood available for making a fire, great for star gazing. No electric pitches but will definitely be back next year when its warmer :)

We stayed one night at this little campsite. It was lovely, so peaceful. Our daughter was allowed to help feed the alpacas which she loved! We went on a little walk by the river which is perfect for all ages.

    We would definitely recommend:)

I was very reluctant to write a review of Hazel Brow Farm as I don’t want to share this absolute gem of a place! This was our third visit in a month as we love it here. On arrival the entrance is on a tight bend and is very steep . There is also a couple of pot holes in the road. Our advice would be to drive past the entrance if you are coming from Reeth and about 400 yards up the road is a turning point . Use this and it will be easier to gain access to the road to the farm. Don’t let this put you off.
Cath is a lovely woman and visits daily with her dog . She us very friendly and welcoming and gives advice on walks , pubs etc
There is room for 3 campervans in the car park area . We used plot 1 (under the tree) the first time we visited and also plot 3 (near the barn entrance) on the next 2 visits . From plot 3 we loved watching the sheep, especially when the farmer and Martin came with food on the quads , beeping the horn so that the sheep come running towards the barn :)
We saw a hedgehog wandering about at night and heard a couple of owls. By the river across the farmers fields there are loads of rabbits and while walking we came across some friendly horses too. Hazel Brow Farm is also home to 3 alpacas. Cath allowed us to feed them on the Sunday morning before we left .... an incredible experience!
There is also a house for rent ( 8 bedrooms) if anyone wants a family or friends get together , you can see this from the visitor centre, above the top field. The views from the house are out of this world.
For us, this is one of the most idyllic places we have visited. It is a complete break from our normal working life , no phone signal, no WiFi - just absolutely perfect..... and we will be back.

Only suitable for a night's camping due to no shower facilities, otherwise would be happy to stay for longer.

We had a great nights stay here. It was a pleasant surprise that they allow camp fires! The toilets were very clean and the pitch was spacious. The site is located in the middle of some wonderful scenery and a local pub 5 mins up the road. From there we took a walk into Reeth along the river to find a couple more pubs. I would highly recommend if you want to strip back to basic camping.(no phone signal so we actually had to talk to each other!) We will be back!

Local attractions

Roam around Richmond (35 minutes’ drive away) to investigate the ruins of Easby Abbey, along with a Norman-era castle and the Green Howards Regimental Museum – or splurge on locally-produced snacks at the cobbled market square for snacks while walking through nearby woodland.

If that whets your appetite for more artisan treats, aim for the Wensleydale Creamery (35 minutes), where you can learn about the history of Yorkshire cheese and, more importantly, pick up masses of the stuff to gorge on.

When you’re full to the brim with dairy products, another wander’s in order to work it all off – amble to a waterfall such as Aysgarth Falls (half an hour), then move over to the Aysgarth Edwardian Rock Garden close by for – you guessed it – a little look at an Edwardian rock garden.

If inclement weather is making outdoor expeditions too tricky, find shelter in the 14th-century ramparts of Bolton Castle (25 minutes).
