Hazel Brow Farm Campsite

9.4

This site does not currently take bookings here on Pitchup.com.

General

  • Enclosed, sheltered site in an orchard opposite a Yorkshire Dales farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Reeth village and 35 minutes to Richmond
  • Private footpath to the River Swale runs right from the park

Looking out over green fields grazed on by sheep, and with River Swale walks right from the grounds – how smashing is Hazel Brow Farm Campsite for a serene stay?

With just a handful of pitches, this site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park is also peaceful; situated in the valley bottom below the village, it's surrounded by calm countryside and just across the river from the Swale Trail walking and cycling route (bikes can be hired less than 10 minutes' drive away).

If you’re planning to give your hiking boots a good workout, set forth on the site’s private footpath running down to the River Swale or climb the nearby hills through lush fields for memorable views over Swaledale.

You could also stroll to the village of Gunnerside, a couple of miles west, for its traditional pub and a café – both serving food – or roam to Reeth, four miles to the east, again following the river. Set in a kind of natural amphitheatre, this settlement is where Swaledale meets up with Arkengarthdale and is known for having (yet more) excellent views.

Facilities back at Hazel Brow include a toilet block and a mains water supply. The access lane is quite steep and narrow and, although there is flat space when you reach the bottom, it’s not accessible enough for large, A-class motorhomes – please bear this in mind when booking.

Stunning location but over priced12/10/2021

Location and views were great. Flat grass pitches. Friendly host

    Disliked:

A few bits that would be very easy to sort. Access to facilities was awkward. Water tap for filling tank seemed to be behind farm machinery and its pipe was hanging in a mucky trough. One of the toilets had a light bulb but no way of switching it on other than via the other toilet. Paper towels were hung in a way which made them almost impossible to break off with wet hands.
Definitley paying for the views rather than the facilities.

From the manager...

Thank you for writing a review and letting us know the problems you had. The trough behind the farm machinery is not operational. The water supplies for the campsite are just outside/prior to the outside loos and again in the washup area. I presume you didn't get our welcome message with details about the facilities? We have had an issue with our messages going into peoples Spam or Junk folders :-(
I'm afraid we don't provide electric lights in the 'outdoor toilets' or anywhere outside and although we do have solar lights outside, a torch is recommended in the loos at night.
We will look at a better system for hanging the paper towels - thanks for pointing out the problem.
We hope you enjoyed the views and our amazing dark skies. Sorry we weren't able to correct the problems you encountered while you were here. If you do visit again we're only a phone call away!

Very picturesque setting in beautiful Swale Dale. We were in a camper van and were pleased we opted for the grass field (level pitches) rather than the hard standing as more scenic. A quiet site, toilets clean, recycling encouraged, fire pits available and wood for sale. Owners welcoming. Phone signal not good but wifi - even in the field!!

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Thanks for reviewing us. We love having the field site with the open views but just a warning - we may be restricted to 28 days next year!

Local attractions

Roam around Richmond (35 minutes’ drive away) to investigate the ruins of Easby Abbey, along with a Norman-era castle and the Green Howards Regimental Museum – or splurge on locally-produced snacks at the cobbled market square for snacks while walking through nearby woodland.

If that whets your appetite for more artisan treats, aim for the Wensleydale Creamery (35 minutes), where you can learn about the history of Yorkshire cheese and, more importantly, pick up masses of the stuff to gorge on.

When you’re full to the brim with dairy products, another wander’s in order to work it all off – amble to a waterfall such as Aysgarth Falls (half an hour), then move over to the Aysgarth Edwardian Rock Garden close by for – you guessed it – a little look at an Edwardian rock garden.

If inclement weather is making outdoor expeditions too tricky, find shelter in the 14th-century ramparts of Bolton Castle (25 minutes).

Must see

  • Richmond Castle (11.7 miles)
  • Easby Abbey (EH) (12.0 miles)
  • The Bowes Museum (12.2 miles)

  • Braithwaite Hall (11.6 miles)
