General

  • Enclosed, sheltered site in an orchard opposite a Yorkshire Dales farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Reeth village and 35 minutes to Richmond
  • Private footpath to the River Swale runs right from the park

Looking out over green fields grazed on by sheep, and with River Swale walks right from the grounds – how smashing is Hazel Brow Farm Campsite for a serene stay?

With just a handful of pitches, this site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park is also peaceful; it’s surrounded by calm countryside for leisurely afternoons of cycling (bikes can be hired less than 10 minutes' drive away) or journeying by car on roads with minimal traffic.

If you’ll mostly be spending your trip wearing out your hiking boots instead of sitting behind the wheel, set forth on the site’s private footpath running down to the River Swale or climb the nearby hills through lush fields for memorable views over Swaledale.

You could also stroll to the village of Gunnerside, a couple of miles east, for its traditional pub and a café – both serving food – or roam to Reeth, four miles to the west, again following the river. Set in a kind of natural amphitheatre, this settlement is where Swaledale meets up with Arkengarthdale and is known for having (yet more) excellent views.

Facilities back at Hazel Brow include a toilet block and a mains water supply. The access lane is quite steep and narrow and, although there is flat space when you reach the bottom, it’s not accessible enough for large, A-class motorhomes – please bear this in mind when booking.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Quiet, low key campsite. Owner very friendly and welcomed us very warmly. Great for us as could allow the dog to run around in a penned off area to the side of the farm so wasn’t on a lead at all times. Nearby pub - we didn’t go as came prepared, but was accessible on foot from the site. Lovely walks down by the river - accessible footpath only 100m away for great dog walks. Alpaca’s were kept on the farm - alpaca trekking is available.

    Disliked:

Lack of hot running water - if u weren’t in a van could be problematic however was clearly advertised.

So pleased you all (and the dog) enjoyed your visit. Thanks for the review.

We had such a warm welcome and our 6 year daughter loved feeding the alpacas and fluffy the sheep. The local Punch Bowl pub does great food and has a nice atmosphere. Really enjoyed the views across the fields. We had lovely few hours walking to Gunnerside with a picnic by the river and lots of splashing around.

    Disliked:

From the manager...

Yes, we agree, the Punch Bowl does great meals and the walk to Gunnerside along the river is one our favourites. We enjoy coming back through Rowleth wood, especially on hot days where it's nice and shaded. So pleased you enjoyed the company of our fluffy friends!

Exactly what we were looking for on a quick tour of the North Yorkshire from Leeds. We only stayed for one night but the camp site is a brief walk to the lovely Punch Bowl Inn in the village and had the weather been better, you can walk in both directions through some beautiful scenery.

    Disliked:

So pleased we were what you were looking for and thanks for coming to stay. Sorry the only facilities we have are running water and toilets but great that you found the Punch Bowl Inn and their yummy food.
Come again and bring some good weather to explore some of our lovely walks :)

Local attractions

Rove to Richmond (35 minutes’ drive away) to investigate the ruins of Easby Abbey, along with a Norman-era castle and the Green Howards Regimental Museum – or splurge on locally-produced snacks at the cobbled market square for snacks while walking through nearby woodland.

If that whets your appetite for more artisan treats, aim for the Wensleydale Creamery (35 minutes), where you can learn about the history of Yorkshire cheese and, more importantly, gorge on masses of the stuff.

When you’re full to the brim with dairy products, another wander’s in order to work it all off – amble to a waterfall such as Aysgarth Falls (half an hour), then move over to the Aysgarth Edwardian Rock Garden close by for – you guessed it – a little look at an Edwardian rock garden.

If inclement weather is making outdoor expeditions too tricky, find shelter in the 14th-century ramparts of Bolton Castle (25 minutes).

Must see

  • Richmond Castle (18.8 kilometers)
  • Easby Abbey (EH) (19.4 kilometers)
  • The Bowes Museum (19.7 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Braithwaite Hall (18.6 kilometers)
